Are there set drain attributes or is it just handled on a case by case basis?

You mean the Attributes used for Drain Resistance? That's Willpower plus one determined by the mage's tradition.

i think his point is that the knacks don't have a tradition

Well, you could go based on how the character "learned". If his hermetic father taught him the spell, then I'd say he resists drain like a hermetic
