Full Version: New Group and some ideas

as some of you may have been reading in my GMs thread (forgot the name, i know it has twaddell keep out in the title, search for twaddell) my group does not have a hacker. Im unsure how much information he has given people, but its as follows. Our group consists of a crow tribe elven shamen (me) which is specialized in combat spells and summoning. My biggest dice pool is to resist drain, at 14 dice (7 charisma, 5 will, 2 ranks in focused concentration). We have 2 elven weapon specialists, one specializing in the exotic weapon known as the monofiliment whip, and the other in revolvers. they both can use most other weapons, but thats where their dice pools are highest. Our last team member is a medic, and a pretty decent one at that. adept with powers mainly placed in killing hands and critical strikes, with some decent med skills. Our first mission we did pretty well, no one died. saved all the hostages, killed the vampire without it getting away. We did have one problem, scouting. we had no way of knowing what was around the corners. I did astraly project a few times, but the spirits the vampire had summoned could put me down quick, and the downside to that is that i makes the group stay and guard me (if they so choose to do so) and leaves us stationary. Was thinking of trying to get a summoned spirit bound to me to be a scout, but not sure if that would work well, or even be worth the resisting drain to be effective when we need it. oh, and my magic stat is at 4, in case you were wondering for the amount of force i can summon. anyone got any ideas? none of us can pilot much besides the medic, with pilot ground and air, but drones seem to be to "look at me im right here". anyone got any ideas on how to scout well with this group? no one has any ranks in anthing sneaky, as it is our first time playing this game, and we are used to DnD hack n slash games. sublty isnt our best suit. also, a good way to take out security without a hacker.

So let me get this straight - you are Shadowrunners and none of you can be stealthy? Look man, I don't mean to be overly critical, but unless your GM is making some sort of special military-themed game with special allowances for your deficiencies, you guys are probably going to be really really bad at actually performing Shadowruns. The whole point of Shadowrun is to be sneaky!

As far as surviving without a hacker, that's going to be hard. Either someone has to get some electronics skills (to disable alarms and stuff on-site) or just befriend a hacker NPC and have him join your team.

Yeah, it sounds like your group has some issues grinbig.gif

As long as your Fixer (GM) is willing to cater though to the group dynamics I think it should be alright.

As far as ideas, talk to your GM and fellow players about it, there's nothing wrong with running a more 'just go in and blow it all up' type campaign.

If you guys decide to tweak things though to play a more typical Shadow Run campaign then I'd suggest the monowhip guy and the medic reroll. Have one build a hacker and the other a face or rigger. Keep in mind too that characters can go a jack of all trades type route like the medic did. Both the hacker and face can pick up a few combat skills and some combat oriented 'ware.

'Medic' characters aren't really needed generally. First Aid is nice and coupled with magical healing and a street doc contact that's all you really need.

I suggest you bribe your GM with lots and lots of money to make sure you don't die.

Also, don't forget that 2 Liter of Pepsi you owe him when you come Saturday.

My nonsense aside, making these guys custom runs is pretty much what I was planning on, but I've only done one session so far and...I'm pretty much out of ideas already. I have about 60 hours before the session though, so I'll probably have something by then.

The party actually DID have a face, and said face did have the whole stealth group, but...after the first session, it became clear that the player of said face (the OP's brother) did not want to talk to any NPCs...or have meaningful contact with the PCs when they met. It was kind of sad. So he rerolled as a "medic," trusting me to take care of the character he's already playing. I'm yet to see the medic, so I don't know what it will be skilled in, though he had (at one point) 27 dice for resisting damage. I find this very amusing, since I feel it would be much better to just not get hit (via stealth, dodging, smoke grenades, etc).

This group started out playing D&D, and we were the epitome of the "kick in the door" style of play. They don't seem to want to change that, so I'm trying to roll with it.

Or maybe I"ll show them what a good stealthy character can do, and see if I can't convert a few of them devil.gif

In that case why not going for a more street/syndicate/gang style theme instead of the sneaky type.
Have the employers need the type of muscle the group can provide.
Runs like that actually pay good money and are easy to incorporate in a running campaign.
We had a very good time with the SR Mission involving the Jade Crane.

The Vory had a tape where a PC killed someone and blackmailed that PC to take that mission.
Lots of PC freedom on wether to take the mission, how to do it and even the option to double cross their employer.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking too.

But the players may feel the same way you are as a GM and be more interested in the stealth style of play. In which case some rerolling is in order.

ok. so it seems we are either going to be blowing crap up, or dieing a horrible, horrible death. I can reroll my mage to be a stealthy mage, but the only problem i see with that is the fact that im going to be the only stealth one there, and there for going to be kinda the "wait till he gets back" character. guess we can go with it, and wait till the GM throws some stuff at us that requires stealth, and see how we do with it. ( HINT HINT).

Or you could bribe the GM. That option hasn't been shot down yet!

Well, that just makes no sense. Having somebody go ahead so you know what you're facing before rushing in? Pff. There'll be plenty of time for caution when you're dead.

I don't think anybody would hire you for something that requires stealth unless it needed to be done so quickly that they literally grabbed the physically closest team of shadowrunners. Or if the Johnson is really, really, reeeeeeeeeaaaally baked. 2070 drugs are fun.
