Full Version: Simsense AI star

I'm currently playing Deus Ex 2, and I've started talking to NG Resonnance in the game. She's a pop sensation liked by all that has little booths in clubs, where an AI/knowbot representing her (is her? not that far in the game yet) holds conversations with people, tailoring itself to please the customer. Now this got me thinking: pop divas are a central part of cyberpunk I've overlooked a lot in the past, but Deus Ex got it flowing again.

So, I'm thinking of applying this to SR. What if you took a rising starlet (hailed as the next Maria Mercurial), added delta wear cyber including skillwires, a DNI-ed computer with loads of memory tucked inside a cyber torso, and one AI (or, more likely, a very powerful knowbot) designed to please like nothing else. The ultimate algorithms applied to calculating songs, rythms and frequencies that are irresistible to the human psyche. The perfect cyberpunk Sharon Apple.

Thoughts?

These already exists, described in the SSG if Im not mistaken.
As for the whole idea, it sounds very good but I wonder if it could compete with simsense in terms of experience and cost. But I could easily see this software used as a hi-tech feature in places for people with money; A hologram or anthroform drone "artist", interacting with the audience through various patterns: Witty comebacks when booed at, and gratitude when applauded.
This "jukebox with a personality" will only do hit-singles, look and feel good all the time, never demand better payment, leave for another job or o.d. backstage.

It's not exactly a new concept:

Simone
Max Headroom

and so on. It's even starting to manifest IRL with virtual news announcers.

That being said, I don't think a legitimate AI would be used in this instance, but rather a clever interface program with a database of responses that could easily mimic an AI without the risk of another Ren-Arc errupting in your apartment.

Although this would be an interesting hook for creating Borg squads and ultimately Blade Runner units.

If you have the CP2020 book, you might look at the low-level AI programs that have a limited independence so it strikes a healthy balance.

The thing about simsense is that fundamentally it is a personnal experience. You're all alone in your head when you jack a sim. You can talk about it with other people afterwards, but no one is *there* when you're doing it. I think that's why pop starlets are more intoxicating than simsense starlets. You can experience music far easier than simsense, and you can have people experiencing the same thing around you. Mass hysteria and it's lighter incarnations cannot, IMO, exist towards simsense starlets as much as it can for pop starlets.

The true key to this AI pop diva concept is unparalleled charisma. A powerhouse computer responding in ways to constantly gratify people of all sorts (not just the teens, not just the adults, not just the gothic angsty ones, etc) and making music that is universally liked by all cultures. But all of it so damn fabricated. Cyberpunk at it's purest.

To make things interested though, she would have to be fabricated by some obscure group of some sort. Not just "the latest Ares entertainment toy", business as usual stuff. Something even the corps couldn't have done. An otaku/AI construct? Something else? Fun.

I am however wondering how much memory you would need to store an AI of some sort inside a person. Assuming deltaware all the way and not caring much how much meat you take out, yo still can't exactly store the source code for one of those things in a person. It'd probably be a "spark" from the real AI/knowbot, and the construct would have to periodically connect to the main server every now and then to compile a new spark based on acquired experiences (I'm thinking Perdido Street Station here).

That's enough rambling for now. Do I sound insane yet?

Not insane at all, but given the theoretical storage capacity of a chip -- the same chip that stores "Handgun 2" is also capable of storing "Handgun 8".

Which it a little complicated to calculate the amount of storage necessary or the relative processing power necessary for the AI to operate.

Are you looking for a mechanic structure for this kind of interactive porno or logical structure?

Not to mention that, if I recall correctly, holographic storage mechanisms have a storage capacity bound only by quantum mechanics ... and is I think theoretically infinite, or something crazy like that; of course, the hardware to DO such a thing hasn't been invented.

I suspect that it's already been invented in the SR world, since the chips and computing is all considered "optical" -- but that the breakthroughs haven't been leapfrogging as much as one might need for near-infinite storage. wink.gif

Considering that a skill jukebox with enough chips for every imaginable skill (hehe) at absurd levels would probably be smaller than a refrigerator, it might not take absurd leaps of engineering mojo to reduce that volume down to something fittable in a human torso. wink.gif And, considering that the Artificial Pop Entity (APE wink.gif) probably only needs a few performance related skills (perhaps ones for Perform, Ettiquette, Negotiation, Booty-Shakin', et cetera), it almost seems viable that such a thing could be constructed in something ... I can see it now, cyberzombie pop idol wink.gif

Maybe that'd be an interesting story hook -- independent research group develops the aforementioned storage breakthrough, and subsequently many people are Interested in the way that only corporations-who-pay-for-shadowruns can be Interested...

Of course, to keep this breakthrough from radically altering the powerscape, if I were GM I'd probably end up arranging for the research and all reverse-engineerable hardware to be destroyed . . . wink.gif

Ok, how about this for an idea: an AI designed to produce the maximum response from (meta)humans. equiped with sensors to monitor the biological status of it's audience. In a testing environment, it learns that it can produce similar physiological responses, and powerful emotional responses from pain. It now becomes capricious, making sounds and sensations that can enthrall or agonize subjects randomly, depending on how individuals respond. it realizes it can get new hights of response from pain that it couldn't get from pleasure, and following that, it becomes cruel and incredibly sadistic.
Possibly, if it became more aware, it could keep subjects who would be rewarded by incredible pleasure for serving it well, and punished severely for failures. they become addicted to and controled by her...

just a brainstorm I had,
enjoy.

But if it's going to be Sharon Apple she needs Jet Aircraft at at least 10.

I don't have Matrix 3 -- what about an otaku's sprites?

"I HAVE SUCH SOUNDS TO PLAY FOR YOU" wink.gif
Kind'a cool idea actually if you're willing to introduce yet another malicious AI, although less high-profile, into your world.

Has nobody read Shadowbeat..?

I'm still annoyed that some of the pages of my copy are too faded to be read properly. Stupid misprints!

Not for a while -- care to expound on your idea?

He's talking about Song-o-mats TM: computers programmed to analyze music industry data & statistics to churn out instant musical hits. You can even make Elvis sing Britney Spears' "Baby one more time" if you wish.
