Full Version: Question on Alchemy

It states on pg. 81-82 of SM that refining radical reagents and producing orichalcum each require attention every 8 hours for 28 days - how much attention? How much time does this leave the character for other pursuits? For example, could the character spend this same time also researching a Focus design, and if so, would he need to take a -2 penalty or is there enough free time to dedicate himself to each task fully?
Ancient History
"Check the circulation and make adjustments." You can do other things in between the periodic checks. This was in direct answer to the exacting attention required in previous editions, where it was you and your hacker girlfriend in the basement, cybering from separate rooms.

[/edit]We toyed with the idea of the circulation time being dependant on tradition - some magical traditions hold for 27 days, or 25 days, or 30 - but in the end we figured everybody would go for the lowest possible period of circulation out of typical gamer madness.

Good man. smile.gif And hey, even as a hard-core (but still tongue-in-cheek) chaos magician myself in RL, with a lot of background research in Hermetic and Thelemic practices, moon cycles still make sense.

Going off of SR3, the answer would be 'undivided attention'. It's not something where you can sit and do this work while reading a magazine, nothing else is allowed for those 8 hours. Given the verbiage you've provided, I'd have to assume it's the same line of thought.

(However, technically, you can make a familiar and have him babysit the work for 13 days and you babysit it for only 15 and you're good, since you make all the tests at the beginning. But that's a really cheap blow, don't do that.)

8 hours of constant attention is harsh. The kind of patience and focus that would require is absurd. Especially since you dont always have to stir it, or do anything to it. I much more like the SR4 interpretation that you only need to keep an eye on it while it "cooks".

going from this, can a possession mage have the things which are used to make the stuff be possessed so they take care of themselves? O.o

If it is a task or ally spirit, then yes. But it would use up a service every sun up to sun down.
Or if you were in the mood, you could just have force X task spirit summoned every morning and night, to do all the work for you, you could just leave it to do its work. Could also summon a powerful task spirit, ie something you use or maybe burn edge to bind, then spend a few points of karma, and have it making your alchemy checks at 20+ dice all year long. Might be worth it.
Stahlseele
with 20+ Dice it's WELL Worth it o.o
as seen in the other thread with that dicepool you can make horrendous ammounts of money quite fast and easy . . more than with the wealth power of free spirits *g*

IF you can survive binding a force 10+ task spirit, then ya, just spend 10+ karma, and its yours for the year. I'm sure that with the payment of 10+ karma it might not even be that angry with the idea of stirring a pot for a while.
Its possible you may be able to get it to go easy on you on the binding test with some good negotiations and a few karma bribe, then ask it to use its edge when its making its rolls, and it will have 30+ dice at the end of every month to be making its tests with, and you can be out there running and earning the karma needed to pay this bad boy off and keep him happy + earn major nuyen.gif from selling the oracal its making through legitimate channels, if your a sinner.

only thing free spirits wealth power is good for now is rare mineral things for foci and the such O.o
but yeah, that would basically be a money-making machine *g*
