Wow, this is the first time I've logged in since September 2006. It's good to be back.

I feel sure this has been answered somewhere already but I've been searching and can't find it.

is a Mystic Adept limited to the metamagics that a regular adept is limited to or does he take the ones a full mage does or can he use any/all of them?
Zak
I can not see anything in the books preventing them from learning metamagics available for regular mages and regular adepts.

So yea, they can learn all of them. Which is a nice thing, if they weren't so starved for karma already smile.gif

Hi something else you may have missed if you have been gone is the errata where adepts and mystic adepts could get a Power Point for adept powers instead of a meta-magic when they initiate. This allows a mystic adept to initate and raise there magician magic while still get new adept powers ... at the cost of those tasty tasty metamagics you were asking about. Just something to think about if you table plays with the errata

What about in SR4 pg189:

"Note that adepts can only learn the metamagic techniques of Centering, Flexible Signature and Masking."

Would you say that Mystic Adepts don't count as Adepts for these restrictions or that they are a type of adept and the restrictions apply to them?

On pg 53 of Street Magic it says that certain of the new metamagics are available only to adepts and mystical adepts but then in the individual description for each of those techniques it just says "(Adepts only)", not (Adepts and Mystic Adepts only) suggesting to me that they class mystic adepts as a type of adept and that the restrictions in SR4 would therefore stand.

Wow I totally missed that. That's really big ... and in direct contradiction with SM pg. 124 "Only magicians with the Masking metamagic technique
(p. 190, SR4) or spirits with the Aura Masking power (p. 98) may attempt to synchronize their aura with a ward in such a way."

Anyone have ideas on what to ignore?
Fortune
Mystic Adepts can learn any Metamagic that a normal Adept and/or a Magician of their Tradition can learn.

That clause (although I believe it arbitrarily bars pure Adepts from some useful Metamagics) merely delineates which specific Metamagics from the SR4 core book that (pure) Adepts are limited to learning. Mystic Adepts have no such limitations.

I cannot think of any rules quotes, but I agree with Fortune. A Mystic is effectively an Adept and a Magician, and so qualifies for anything/everything either of the two qualify for, excluding anything with an additional requirement of specific abilities such as Projection.

The two quotes are not contradictory. Adepts may learn Masking, but unlike a Magician they cannot use it to synchronize their aura with a ward. Very straightforward.
