Can someone please explain how the sum to ten and sum to zero system works for character generation? I've heard mention of them on this board but I don't know the rules.

Start with the Priority system.
Assign A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, E=0.
Take a combination that adds up to 10.

Question, can you take the same thing multiple times? Or is this JUST so you can have two A's and a C, etc. It seems like if you can't take things multiple times, the only people who can get a substantial advantage from it is mundane humans (since they're the only ones who don't use E or D slots. Everyone else has at least E slot and B or A slot filled, leaving them with very little leeway in what else they can do.)
Kagetenshi
You can, otherwise it'd be the priority system, not sum-to-10.

Where did you hear of Sum-to-Zero? I've never heard of it.

No, you can't take the same thing multiple times. You can't take Resources A twice, for instance. Each Priority still only gets one value, but the value is between 4 and 0 instead of A and E. The total of all five must equal 10 or less.

And no, mundane humans aren't the only one who gets an advantage from it. It allows anyone to have the same level of Priority in more than one area, such as a full hermetic mage with a million in resources (for spell points and foci). It also lets you build more believable gangers who don't have an A/4 in any category.

Ah, I misunderstood the question. The Doc is right.

Bugger all... Don't tell my GM, okay? So is there any system where you can start out with more than a million nuyen? (lets not get into WHY I want more than a million nuyen, just accept that I have a halfway decent reason to get my naughty little hands on that kind of cash).

Sum to 10 was in the old 2nd edition books. I believe it was in the main manual, 'cause I recollect reading it and thinking 'what?'

Lilt
BECKS can if your GM allows it. Get NSRCG and poke about with the system on there.

Answer One: Yes, BeCKS, but as per GM permission only.

Answer Two: Right and wrong. It was from 2nd Edition, but wasn't in SR2 Core, it was in SR2 Companion.

You can get more than a million nuyen using the Point System as well -- it's only under the relatively rigid Priority system that prevents you from starting off with a million to buy stuff.

UM question what priority system do you use the one I have list priority A in resources as being 1,000,000. So no the priority system does not prevent you from starting with a million to buy stuff.
Tanka
I'm pretty sure he meant "more than a million," not "a million."

That's what the rest of us were speaking of, having more than one million nuyen to buy stuff. I'd assume he meant the same, just typed faster than he thought.
Zolhex
I was just checking.

Yep, sorry. grinbig.gif
