Full Version: Dragons assimilating into society

Sweaty Hippo
I read somewhere on the Sixth World Wiki on one of the pages about the Great Dragons that there is a substantial group of dragons that want to assimilate themselves into metahuman society.

I thought that this did not make a lot of sense. How could they effectively assimilate with their large forms and powerful magic? Not to mention that they can squash you flat or burn you to a crisp. Also, a lot of dragons look down on non-dracoforms, seeing them as tools to be used. This attitude would cause a lot of conflict and resentment amongst the metahuman community.
Or are these dragons merely using "assimilation" as an excuse for domination?
hyzmarca
Dunkie had a talk show. He was the Oprah of the Sixth World. You don't get any more assimilated than that.

Most dragons understand that their powerful magics don't mean squat to cruise missiles or orbital laser cannons. The old ways of brooding alone in caves and eating trespassers just don't work any more and they know it. So, they work closele with metahumans, they go into business and politics and they play by metahuman rules, for the most part. Getting around is easy for Greats, who can take metahuman form, but more difficult to normal adults (especially since the shapechange spell was nerfed in SR4). Still, they have dragon sized offices and dragon-sized limos.

There is this was particular image from Dragons of the Sixth World of a tattooed adult dragon wearing body armor, wielding an assault cannon, and drinking from a flask of vodka on a snow-covered mountain with a Russian troll and some electronic equipment that was probably radar.

Page? I need to get out my books and look that up.

Look at Lofwyr. He's the Pinnacle of adapting Draconic Culture to Modern Times.

He's still Lord and Master as "Nature" dictactes, but does so in a way humans understand.
Daddy's Little Ninja
Right, dragons are not adapting to our world so much as tyhey are adapting our world to meet them. One is the head of a AAA corp. The ones in Denver and Mount Shasta are the lords of their realms. Alamais and the ones in Japan and Iran lurk behind the scenes manipulating their pawns.
Fortune
Schwarzkopf is, among other things, a highly-regarded professor of Magic in Prague.

He was the Oprah of the Sixth World.

When Oprah dies, I'm going to base a whole campaign around runs involving bequests from her will.
Stahlseele
there's a Dragon in Hawaii i think . .
he has a usual day-job and from time to time lets the children of his city ride on his back . .
i don't know if i would call the playing flying horse part assimilated, but the job sure is *g*
darthmord
Heh, what an NPC concept...

A humanitarian Dragon working in the Barrens trying to help the downtrodden through bonafide relief efforts.

Would you as a runner believe it (even if the GM promised he was not shitting you)?

She won't die, ever. The idea of facing a being more powerful than herself in beyond her imagination. Maybe she is a pre-awakened dragon.

Nope. But a Dragon working in the Barrens trying to help the downtrodden through bonafide relief efforts on the other hand is something I would consider not impossible.

It occurs to me that it's not entirely unlike the 800-pound gorilla question.

Where does a dragon assimilate into society?

i know you want the answer of: where ever he damn well pleases . . . .
but probably not into a policlub like humanis or something like that *g*

Fortune, I admire a guy who can come up with a good pun. And yours was great. It will rank in history right up there with the Obamacidal maniac that's going to ruin my hopes and dreams for this good country. But you know, and I know, that "immoral elf" was too good to stay in your hands. It had everything: clever wordplay, contextual accuracy, concision, the works. But it was so good, it transcends any individual dumpshocker. We're very grateful to you, because we (by which I mean everyone, without exception) hate the immortal elves. But now it's time to let it go, as it enters the Shadowrun lexicon. You've enriched our gaming experience. You'll have to be content with that.

I don't hate Immortal Elves. Drop Bears need balance in this world. You cannot have light without darkness to define it.

Why not? I mean, who's going to argue?
Stahlseele
for starters the poli club i'd say . . if they are hardcore enough at least *g*
Chrysalis
Imagine a dragon wit its bottle of buckwheat, it's skewed Burberry cap, the gold chain around its neck and its white shell suit, shouting at taxis on a Saturday night.

If you think that is possible then dragons will have integrated into society.
Stahlseele
sounds like eliohan a little bit . . or whatever the name of that simple party-dragon was *g*

great dragons don't really have to do much to assimilate. They're pretty much like any corp. Powerful, self-centered and cold blooded.
ChicagosFinest
Not to mention that there are juvenile "adult" dragons that use magic to polymorph into human form. If there can be a dragon in cyberspace there can be altruistic dragons in the Barrens
Snow_Fox
Oh my, what a thought, a barrens go gang led by a secret dragon
Stahlseele
rhonabwy or at least one of the english/british/welch? dragons has taken over the knights of rage strret gang for example . and not very much secret in that one either *g*
CanRay
Actually, I have an idea for a Taxi company, Dragon Cab ("The Cabs with the Armoured Hides!") starting a competition with Combat Cab (Ghoul Cab has too loyal a group to try and break into).

And, yes, it's run by a very young dragon that found religion when he woke up, and then had to immigrate to Seattle. Mostly, I just want to do my really bad East Indian Accent. nyahnyah.gif
Snow_Fox
Rhonabwy is another lord of the manor type like DLN brought up. The street gang is just another tool for him to use like SK's security forces or the Ancients working for TT.
last_of_the_great_mikeys
Ya know, if a dragon got his scales opened a little and a skin pocket then he could be a flying taxi...
Stahlseele
eeeewww . . marsupial dragons x.x . .
would you want to climb in there?
riding piggy-back is much cooler ^^
Chrysalis
Mmm dragon sized hot pockets. Is human the new strawberry?

QUOTE (Dunkie's Will)
After much research and hundreds of bags of burned Nuke-and-Pop, I leave 20 million nuyen to the holder of the patent for the twentieth-century process that produced popcorn capable of being popped over an open flame (this dragon's method of choice). I believe it was called Speedy Pop, or Quick Pop, or something similar. The patent holder must use this money to renew the patent and resume production.
Aaron
... who is literally slumming.

The Popcorn part of Dunkie's will is going to have a major part of the early part of my campaign!

first there were Big D's Revenge and Big D's Temper, now there is Big D's Hunger!
that's right folks! on behalf of one of the last wishes of our all time favourite Dragon, our sadly deceased President, we have resumed Production of his favourite PopCorn!
Buy 5 and you get a little Flame-Thrower for free, so you too can cook it on your open flame too, just like he did!
Chrysalis
It is actually called a culinary torch or a cheflamme.

I'm just thinking of DIMR opening a fast food joint wherer you can get meals with sacks of burger, like White Castle,
mealws like Hatchling, Dragonet, dragon, Great dragon etc.
CanRay
DIMR, being a research company run by a Non-Profit (Draco Foundation) couldn't do it, but I'm sure that Saeder-Krupp is investigating the idea.

"Gold Dragon Burgers" anyone?

I'm sure Harliquin would eat there! nyahnyah.gif

How about a Medieval-themed restaurant, with Mages peforming magic "tricks," dressed as wizards?
Or maybe a "Heart of Mordor" restaurant catering to Ork cuisine?
The possibilities are endless!

An incomplete list of companies and other organizations 'owned' by the Draco Foundation includes ...

- Assets Incorporated (legitimate 'shadowrunner' company) - probably registered as security or the like
- Cherry Creek Limited (finance company)
- Cinnamon Swirl Gourmet Baked Goods Company (baked goods) - supposedly hidden ownership
- DIMR (research)
- House Beautiful (home cleaning service) - supposedly hidden ownership
- Libra Holdings Incorporated (finance) - subsidiary of Cherry Creek Ltd.
- Lysis Inc. (industrial) - supposedly hidden ownership
- NachtMuzik (simchips) - supposedly hidden ownership
- Webster-Gannet (chemicals) - supposedly hidden ownership

I am sure there are more though.

*Blinks* And these came from?
Dashifen
I've sometimes used dragons as random NPCs and had a reoccurring one that was security for an elven bar, Our Lady of the Bottle. In general, if not over used, they can ratchet up the tension levels when the PCs realize how well-connected someone might be if they've got draconic backup or if their draconic themselves.

I'm pretty sure that you have a copy of Nath's Corp Index. All the various references are listed there. smile.gif
