A technomancer because I would never be alone if I didn't want to be. I'd have registered sprites to keep me company. I doubt I would be a Shadowrunner, but I would be spoofing a lifestyle for sure.

Honestly, everyone in this thread would be a target in the Shadowrun universe. We have no powers, skills, or gear to be anything other than human shaped speed bumps. Most of us wouldn't even make a good meal for the critters running around in the night.

I seem to be a bit of a skill monkey, which doesn't surprise me. There are probably things that I've missed. The part I found difficult to decide on was my Body rating. I'm pretty out of shape at the moment, but I'm still fairly solid. I'd say I'm definitely above average when it comes to being big, but at the same time Body is used for things like endurance running which I'm not sure where I'd pitch now, but probably fairly low. So I put myself down as 2. If I lose a few pounds and get my CV fitness back, I could probably put it up to a 3 in line with my Strength. Reaction is really hard to judge - been a while since I've had to duck a punch - so I put that down at 2 as well.

Assuming you're meaning in SR4 terms, I think people are being fairly honest with themselves here. I know I tried to be. Of course that doesn't mean how we see ourselves is accurate, but I think few of us would put ourselves as "Best of the Best" in any category. I thought about giving myself a Logic 5 - I'm pretty smart in an analytical capacity and I have excellent recall for facts. But I think my capacity to focus isn't as great as it could be and that limits what I actually achieve on what would be Logic tests in Shadowrun. I certainly wouldn't put myself down as a 6. Maybe after a bit more karma. wink.gif

@ knasser: Yeah I put logic 4 down as well. I have an IQ of around 135-140, but IQ tests are biased towards critical thinking. Did you read the guy who posted right above me saying he wanted to be a technomancer Kyoto Kid? The post was referring to that.

...yes, and that is why I still think my reply still applies, as stating myself "as is" for the SR world, I wouldn't survive one day/night in the shadows just due to my physical handicaps.

I'd probably make an OK contact, or a NPC wageslave, but definitely not a runner.
masterofm
Oh yeah I think pretty much everyone on this board would be unable to be a Shadowrunner. I was just thinking stat wise what people would be. I'm totally a wage slave who would get chewed up if I tried to be a runner. I mean come on 250 bp? Unless you boned yourself hard core actually trying to make a shadowrun character with 250 bps you might be able to have 1-3 stats and skills that would be half way decent. Probably wouldn't even qualify for a runner position even then. I find it is interesting to look at how you would fit into the world you would create.

I honestly think the only thing that would even make me a possibility as a contact is that I am a very very loyal person and am willing to help people out if they need it with little to no questions asked. Other then that I would suck in a Shadowrun world.
Kyoto Kid
...that's pretty much why I mentioned contact in my case as well. There's a lot of information I do know about in certain fields and several resources I have at my disposal that could help runners during legwork while slightly augmenting my meager income.

If I looked at my current physical state, I would have the SR3 version of the Infirm flaw at least at level 2 due to severe RA. I'm not totally sedentary but also by no means athletic minded (even for an average person) while I am still very perceptive and quick thinking (which is why the SR4 infirm quality doesn't work).

Well what would your stats be then? I'm interested to know.

Yeah, that was being conservative. Most runners don't live to be my age. If they did, they would have a lot of contacts, life experience, and accumulated resources.

I could have included more qualities, like media junkie, day job, dependents, etc. I was already at the 35 BP max so I stopped.
Wounded Ronin
The question that comes to mind for me is what exactly the attribute scores mean. The descriptions given in the SR3 BBB are pretty vague.

For example, on Saturday I watched the UFC live, and was pretty thrilled to see Brock Lesnar basically be one of the biggest powerhouses I've ever seen. I think I basically crapped my pants when I saw a single punch from Lesnar send his opponent rolling head over heels backwards; that's like comic book stuff right there implemented in real life. So what is Brock Lesnar's STR score, given that he's human? Is it 6? Is it 7?

Now if Brock Lesnar is, say, 6, that only leaves 5 and 4 as the points between himself and an "average" person in the modern world, who would be by definition be defined as 3.

So then I try to stat myself. Well, I'm no Brock Lesnar, but I do go to the gym frequently. Back when I used to play judo in college I was strong enough that I was often able to force other people using muscle power, although there were a couple big strong guys who were stronger than I. I really enjoy combative sports, which I guess is something that probably the average man doesn't enjoy so much, and which requires a certain degree of strength and conditioning.

So am I STR 4, or am I STR 5? If Brock Lesnar is 6, I'd be more inclined to say 4, since I'd guess the majority of professional athletes (i.e. boxers, football players, etc) would probably be 5; more athletic and strong than me, since I don't train as much or as seriously as they do, and my workouts certainly have less professional focus. But on the other hand, if Brock Lesnar is 7, maybe I could be 5 instead of 4 since I'm a largish sturdy guy, and the professional athletes could be 6.

Anyway, my point is that with only a few numbers to choose from, I feel it's real hard to pick the right number to describe oneself because going up one point or down one point has pretty big implications for defining your abilities with respect to the rest of the world.
Wounded Ronin

only leaves 5 and 4 as the points between himself and an "average" person in the modern world, who would be by definition be defined as 3.

A score of 3 in SR4 is a "high average" at the least. Whilst 3 might be the median, and conceivably the mean, it's definitely not the mode. 2 is the typical score. For strength, I'd put it as follows:
Strength 1 skinny male, perhaps average female, adolescent
Strength 2 typical man, perhaps slightly stronger than most woman
Strength 3 stronger man, e.g. a dock worker by profession
Strength 4 significant physical training or very strong natural talent. Possibly a sportsman in a weight-centric sport. Visually very apparent
Strength 5 major physical training, e.g. competitive weight lifter. Unmissable.
Strength 6 extreme muscular power, blatantly obvious visually
Strength 7 olympic champion level. A genuine monster. Result of both great natural talent and a lot of sustained training.

Looking at that guy (and not knowing how tall he is, which affects things), I'd say that he's probably a 5, definitely not a 6 and if he's quite short, he might be a 4, though probably not. Whilst he's obviously very muscular, it's wrong to ascribe the power of those punches to the strength alone. Technique counts for a lot and I used to know a guy who weighed around 150lbs at most who could very successfully knock someone out cold, Because when his fist landed on you, you had that entire 150lbs travelling behind it at speed. Conversely I weigh over 200lbs and I have some martial arts training, but I don't punch my weight - my timing just isn't good enough. Also, those people looked to me like they really knew how to roll with the punch. Not detracting from him - I wouldn't want to fight him. But I don't look at it and say "Strength 6" because of the punch.

I always thought skill rating 6 was the highest anyone can be according to SR4 rules w/o augmentation. A Str. 6 character is the strongest someone can be, just the way a body 6 is.... um.... the body...est person you can be.

I feel like I could bump up some more of my stats just a little as I was under the idea that a 2 in your stats is average, but my ego isn't all that awesome.

An example is Michael Phelps who has Swimming (sprinting) 7(+2). Along with Strength 6 gives him 15 dice for racing.

When I explain Attributes to players I use the following example:
Logic ~ IQ:
  • 1 ~ 60
  • 2 ~ 80
  • 3 ~ 100
  • 4 ~ 120
  • 5 ~ 140
  • 6 ~ 160
  • 7 ~ 180
Many players miss how bad an attribute of 1 really is.
DTFarstar
Well, why the hell not, huh? I will be using MJBurrage's examples above as a baseline for me. I will also iunject a small explanation in places I deem appropriate. I am attempting to explain what may seem like arrogance on my part. Also remember, I believe a lot of you were using 2 as the baseline and I am using 3.

Christopher Watson AKA Darian Farstar

BOD - 3 - Physical fortitude for resisting shock, taking damage well, and other uses of body, I probably have a 4 not a 3. 2 for endurance activity so 3 overall.
AGI - 4 - I rarely miss what I aim at, be it throwing things, shooting guns, or video games.
REA - 4 - I stopped training myself, and I think my reaction has suffered for it- previously it probably would have been a 5.
STR - 4 - I am 6'8 and significantly stronger than the average male due to size, and very recently working out on a semi-regular basis.
CHA - 4 - I make friends more easily than most, and can typically stay on just about everyone's good side if I want.
INT - 5 - "Bad Feelings" have saved me from making many mistakes in the past, successful 8 year relationship(part CHA part INT)
LOG - 7 - According to testing, I have a 182 IQ. So using the above example, there we go. 50th percentile on the MCAT without the benefit of high school or college training in the relevent subjects, 5 hours study literally the night before, and a medium to severe migraine.
WIL - 4 - I have a 6 or 7 for resisting pain and outside influence, but like a 2 or at most 3 for resisting simple temptation that will make me feel better. (Chocolate, dark room, skipping class to avoid light and sound, etc.)
Edge - 5

Positive Qualities -

High Pain Tolerance 3
College Educated
Analytical Mind
Changeling - Class II SURGE
- Enlongated Limbs
- Vomeronasal Organ (People seriously smell different to me depending on mood and hormone output.)
- Thermal Sensitivity ( I actually see a fairly significant amount farther than the average human into both the infrared and ultraviolet range )
Technically there should be enhanced hearing somewhere here too. I can hear dog whistles and the vibrations that EM fields makes in the air manifests as an annoying high pitched noise. (All TVs, Radios, Microwaves, computers, people, etc. make this noise to me.)

Negative Qualities -
Severe to Crippling Chronic Migraines(24 hrs/day 7 days/week)
Bad Luck
Changeling - Class II SURGE
- Nocturnal
Big Regret
Poor Self Control - Combat Monster (Things go poorly when I get caught up in fights. A pain tolerance like mine means not knowing when you are too hurt to continue.)

*Skill due to interest and minimal experience as opposed to actual training.

It's truthful as I can be, I am an honest to god freak of nature. Beyond this I'm immune to most medications, so whee, I don't know if that is a positive or negative quality. If someone wants to bother they can do the BP calculations. The physical stats would all drop by one if 2 is the mode. Mentals might stay the same, logic would.

Hope I don't come off at too arrogant, I really tried to be honest- but if the stats are undeserved then I guess that makes it worse, huh?

This has come up before. 2 is not underdeveloped. Firstly, with skills, your examples are contradicted by the book. 0 is not "untrained" but the typical knowledge of that skill. So someone with a drive skill of 0 is not a bad driver (though they might be if their accompanying attributes are poor), they are simply typical. Someone with a drive skill of 1 is probably someone who does quite a lot of driving or has taken an advanced test.

With attributes, there has to be more room at the top of the scale than there is at the bottom because so few people live up to their potential.A champion weight lifter (Str 6) is not merely twice as strong as the typical person, which they would be if the mode strength were 3. Similarly for other attributes. 3 doesn't work. 2 is a much better approximation. "Average" is a term with multiple meanings. It can be considered the mode (the most frequent value) or median (the mid point of the possible range) or the mean (add everything together and divide by the number of things your counting). The mean is ineffective for talking about average physical ability. To illustrate, consider the following:

You have a sample of ten people. 8 of them can run the 400m in 60 seconds, but two of them can run it in 50 seconds. If you take average to be the mean, you get an "average" of (8x 60 + 2x 50 all divided by 10 people) 58 seconds. Eight out of ten people are "below average." You see? Most people are not going to be "average strength" in the sense of the mean. It could in theory work the other way around with most people being "above average" and a few coming in lower, but that would mean a world filled with people who really lived up to their potential, hard training all the time, and that is not the case.

The most common attribute is 2 and that's what I've been using as typical and I think most people are. As I say, it's come up before.

So, Knasser, can you explain the apparent contradiction between skill 0 being a typical level of skill whereas skill 1 represents a "beginner"?

The above are not my interpretation they are the exact descriptions from the core rulebook (pages 62 & 108-109).

The IQ example was mine. Along those lines, I do think the Skill Examples are wrong for Academic Knowledges, for ranks 1–6 (they overestimate how much many graduates actually know about their field). I have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, an MBA, have worked in research labs at the university level, teach college courses, and am studying bio-medical engineering at the postgraduate level.

Based on my experience with students, faculty, and coworkers, the examples I would use are:
  • 1 Beginner - A college course, or AP (Advanced Placement) equivalent
  • 2 Novice - Associate’s (2-year) degree
  • 3 Professional - Bachelor’s (4-year) degree
  • 4 Veteran - Master’s degree
  • 5 Expert - Doctorate degree
  • 6 Elite - Postdoctoral study
  • 7 Legendary (Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein)
That's not to say that one cannot have a high skill without a degree, but rather the minimum skill to complete the degree listed.

  • 5 ~ 140
  • 6 ~ 160

I would modify that to be on (a Wechsler scale).

Logic ~ IQ:
  • 1 ~ 70
  • 2 ~ 85
  • 3 ~ 100
  • 4 ~ 115
  • 5 ~ 130
  • 6 ~ 145
  • 7 ~ 160+

This makes 3 the mean score, with each point being one standard deviation away.
It makes Int 1 funtionaly retarded with Int 2 being below average. On the flip side, Int 5 is genius level intelect, and 6 and 7 are realy frakkin smart without throwing out stupid large IQ numbers. For comparison sake, only 15.9% of the population would have Int 4 or greater, 2.3% would have an Int of 5 or greater, 0.2% would have an INT of 6 or greater, and only an astronomicaly small percentage has Int 7.

Sorry, IQ discusions that venture into a range above 160 tend to cause me to go crazy. Once an IQ is that high tests arent realy equipped to measure it in any meaningfull fashion.

I have a question on this and other posts: There are IQ systems that go beyond 150? I know the scale of 70?-150, which is already considered semi-reliable only in the 80-120 bracket. The level of differentiation in numbers can be freely choosen, but the method of measurement does not magically get better.
Halabis
Yeah, there are other scales. Its just that where I went to school they heavily emphasized the WAIS, so whenever anyone talks about IQ I just automaticaly veiw it through that lense. Yeah no IQ test is realy 100% accurate, and will give different results depending on the culture of the subject. To complicate matters most tests dont even give you an IQ. They give you several different IQs on a variety of different types of thining. I supposed in SR terms Int or or Log

You know what I would do if I could do it (i.e. if I were awesome)? I'd GM a Shadowrun game where the players would have to choose "character sheets" from this thread, and we'd have a game of "normal people versus the bad guys of the SR world". Just to see what would happen. It would be epic and glorious.

Don't be so negative. For me, some of the most fun SR games to participate in is where your character is completely underpowered and you must make it through using meticulous strategy and guile. It would be an engaging challenge.
