DSF Game - "One for the Money"

Ok so I know the last few years I have not been the best at completing games. Sadly my real life has been up and down and it seems just when I am getting a good game going I stop posting for 6 months. To anyone I have done this two, I apologise. Having said that, it looks like things have stabilized quite a bit and I will be on DSF for some time. I waited a few weeks after I started posting again to make sure life would not surge up and snap me away. So in doing so I am announcing a new game, always my favorite part of DSF!

The Setting:

Seattle 2070, January 15th.

The team

I am looking for 3 or 4 individuals who are willing to make a character that fits the following molds.
Mage
Hacker
Rigger
Infiltrator

Fortune, and Mr. Juan are already in the game and they have both expressed an interest in running combat oriented characters. Meaning they are making characters who's primary interest is combat. All characters should have a certain amount of combat ability.

Rules

There are a few. First of all no weird races. Keep it to the basics that are in the BBB. I only have the BBB and Street Magic. You can use Augment and Arsenal but if I ask, your gonna need to supply the section and quote that covers whatever rule your using. Try to keep your characters real. Please no hardcore language either. Hell and Damn are fine, everything else use Shadowrun slang. I like team players and people who get along. The game is more important than your character. If you like character's that rub everyone the wrong way, this is not for you.

Character Creation

400bp no house rules. Use the RAW in the BBB. You can initiate at character gen using BP, but only once. You may bind magic items using BP, but only one. Standard gear restrictions apply. Qualities are GM approval. So if you have a bizarre quality in mind ask me before basing your whole concept around it.

Assuming I get enough people today we will look at final character creation being for Friday the 19th. With the game to start one week from today.

Please post your character in a Spoiler tag.

Posting

Please post any questions in the OOC, do not PM (or email) me. Please try and post at least once a day, not posting on weekends is fine. I will post the time, day, and location with every post. Bear it in mind. Use the following posting guidelines.

I'm holding off A) because I don't have anything that fits on hand, and B) because I know there are a lot of lurkers who haven't had a chance to join a game (and I always feel like I'm taking someone else's spot), but if there's still room tomorrow evening, I'm game.
Damage
I would definitely be interested in either the mage or the infiltration specialist, but it'll be a day before I get him done.
-Damage
Kerris
I'm interested, and I'd probably either go for the mage or the rigger. I have a concept for each started, though backstories don't necessarily fit Japan. They could easily be modified, though.

I think I'd prefer the mage... the concept has been bouncing around my mind for a good long time, with no game to play in.

P.S. Would there be a problem with playing a gaijin? That is, a foreigner? Obviously very fluent, or maybe even a native speaker of Japanese.
BlackHat
Didn't see Japan mentioned above. wobble.gif
Kerris
Wow. I'm totally mixing up my threads.

Completely disregard anything referring to Japan in my last post.
Shadow
OK we got Kerris as a Mage/rigger and Damage as a Magre/Infiltraitor. Blackhat if you throw in your hat (pun intended) we can get rolling.
BlackHat
Sure - again, if someone else jumps into this thread who hasn't had a lot of chances to play PBP, I don't mind giving up my seat. wink.gif If not, more fun for me.

I probably won't have anything ready until tonight (but the wife is working, so I should have time to give it proper thought, once I get out of work).

I would probably lean towards the infiltration role, since I have been working on something along those lines (and play primarily rigger/hackers in other games), but I suspect that if Kerris is leaning towards a mage, that Damage will lean towards infiltration - and both of them beat me to calling anything, so I have no problem with that. biggrin.gif I know the matrix-rules well enough, I think, to put something good together in an afternoon.

Couple of questions. You mentioned Augmentation and Arsenal, explicitly - do the same "ask first, and quote rules" guidelines cover the other books (specifically unwired, as a LOT of new rules and programs and whatnot are introduced there - although runner's companion has some cool qualities I might bounce off of you).

Next question, since it is not exactly a house-rule, do you allow skill groups to be broken apart at character-generation? (Like, would Hacking 6, Electronic-Warfare 4, Cybercombat 4 cost 48 points, or 56 points).
Kerris
Yeah, I'm gonna snag the mage. Here's her background, stats to come (I'll probably have to run some things by you... I feel as though the background justifies one negative quality that would otherwise be considered cheesy. It's not a necessity, but I feel it's appropriate.) Also, I intend this character to have a condition Geas.

[ Spoiler ]
Mister Juan
@Shadow
Are the PCs an establish team who know each other?
This is mainly so I know how to write up my background.

@all
Just so everyone knows, my character will probably be a mix of many "achetypes". I don't really like pinning my PCs down as something in particular, but as Shadow pointed out, he's going to be somewhat combat oriented. If I had to classify him, it would be something like 60% Face / 40% Combat.

Shadow
I would prefer you guys be at least friendly toward one another. If you go with established team you will get a +DV when negotiating. Also if you are an established team, and you pick a team leader who calls the shots, you will get a +DV to initiative.

As for the questions:

Ask and give a brief description of the rule. I am not fond of all the new books that have come out. For instance I feel Catalyst had a great oppertunity to NEVER EVER mention surge again. They blew it. So just give the gist of what you want and how you will apply it to your character. I am trying to keel the game feeling some what belivable.

QUOTE

My understanding is that Groups can only be broken post character creation. If that is a misunderstanding on my part, give me the page, para, line and I will review it.

BlackHat
No, I think your interpretation is a valid one - probably the right one. I've been in games that go both ways on this one. Not breaking them up is fine.

Can I assume you are not using the software degradation rules from unwired?

Are technomancers more exotic than you're looking for, or would you prefer a traditional hacker?

Off the top of my head, the "restricted gear" quality from RC (5-points, allows you to buy one piece of gear with availability up to 20) would be very useful for a hacker-type (can get response up to 6, which helps everything, and/or a simsense-accelerator cyberware from augmentation, etc).

Still undecided between hacker and technomancer. I'll try to make a decent rigger, and try to do both roles, but I think hacker is generally more critical to a team, so that will probably be the priority.
Shadow
I don't consider me giving the yay or nay on Qualities and some optional rules "house rules" so I hope this does not confuse anyone.

QUOTE

You are correct. Stick to gear and qualities and the like from the optional rule books.

No. Standard restrictions apply, unless... you can give me a damn fine reason why your character would have gear normally only availible to AAA corps.
BlackHat
Coming along.

When you say everyone should have some amount of combat ability, are you looking for anything in particular?

For example, a rigger in the right drone could be pretty useful in combat, but unless I go out of my way, the hacker probably won't be a very feasible combatant in the flesh.
Shadow
I didn't say everyone should have the same amount, I said everyone should have some combat ability. If your a hacker then know how to use a pistol at least. As for your earlier question, I prefer hackers (either cyber or adept's) over technomancers. However I am not going to say no to a technomancer.

I run "hi-octane" games. If you can't fight your not going to get to be in most of the game. So to speak. Does that clarify it for you?

I didn't even notice this thread. I really must be getting old.

More later, after I actually read the contents herein. wink.gif

From the SR4 FAQ

QUOTE (SR4 FAQ)
When can you break up a skill group into its component skills? Can you break it up during character creation? Can I break apart a skill group in order to buy a specialization for one of the skills?

You can break apart a skill group whenever you want--as long as the GM allows it. We advise against breaking apart skill groups during character creation in order to keep it simple and counter min-maxing. Any time you improve a single skill within a skill group or add a specialization to one of those skills, that skill group no longer exists.

Does that clarify it for you?

Yep. Unfortunately, I overestimated my ability to finish tonight. wink.gif I'll do my best tomorrow - can probably sneak some in during work.
I was leaning towards a traditional hacker, anyway - so if that's what you prefer, consider it done.
Fortune
I haven't even started!
Mister Juan
As usual, I would have a very good explanation for everything that follows. I just want to know how you feel about these Qualities, before I start building my character.

Bad Rep (+5)
+3 to Notoriety for Bad Rep

Enemy 3 (+15)
Same as SR3

In Debt (+20)
Plus 20 000 Nuyens, owes 30 000, plus 10% interest each month

Signature (+10)
Always uses the same weapons
Will leave 2 silver coins on each mark

Adrenaline Surge -15
The character always acts first on the 1st combat round, regardless of his Initiative

Erased, 24 hours -10
Any SIN, undesirable credit history, or personal information on the Matrix is burnt after 24 hours

Trustworthy -5
+1 to ONE Influence Skill
Shadow
I believe the rule is 35 points in positive qualities is the max you can have. If I am reading this right it is 50... I don't think they intended it as net qualities either. I'm fine with all of them except Signature. If you can clarify for me what that means, that would be great. So trim them a litttle to get down to 35 and you will be good to go.
Kerris
More specific questions about qualities for Rata (my mage):

Incompetent (Hacking) and Scorched. Are these too cheesy, in terms of build? I know they're largely considered munchkin fodder amongst DSers, but I think they fit. If you'd rather I didn't take them, than no big deal.

Edit: If that's the case, would it be different if I took a BTL addiction as well? And maybe went Incompetent (Computer) instead?
Shadow
I don't view them as munchkin fodder as long as you can provide a brief description on your character sheet that explains it.
Kerris
Cool... I think I'm taking a BTL addition anyway. A little more effect of the Crash, and the stress of being kicked out on her own at the age of 12.5. Please check my math. I'm pretty sure it's right, but I may have missed something.

Shadow
Can you take it out of that black background? I got about 10 seconds in before my eyes started wigging out biggrin.gif The normal spoiler is fine.
BlackHat
There is a quality in RC called "Born Rich" that costs 10 points, and allows you to spend 10 more points on gear. Allowed?

Edit: Nevermind. I think I can fit everything in under the bar. Still might be a good option, but don't worry too much about it.
Shadow
Alloud, but your still under the restrction limit.
Kerris
The reason for the black background is to preserve formatting - it's a [ code ] block. But I'll see what I can do.

Updated: Edited, and formatting mostly preserved.

Shadow: I just don't think I have the time right now to put the proper amount of effort into this game. As such, it really wouldn't be fair to you or the other players for me to continue ... or actually start. Please give my place to one of the others that desperately wants to join, and more importantly, don't be offended by my decision. I love your games, but it just isn't the right time. frown.gif
BlackHat
Draft. Let me know what you think. If you guys think this character's personality will be a problem, I can change it - but I thought this would be an interesting change of pace from the usual "cool as IC" hacker.

Still got some cash left over to spend (probably on a drone) - but wanted to make sure I was going in the right direction.
Non-core-book stuff (to make sure you're cool with it):
- Ergonomic is a program option from Unwired that lets a program not count against your system limit (running at most System ergonomic programs)
- Optimiaztion is a program option that lets a program run at a higher rating than the sytem/response limits (up to the optimization rating higher)
- Response enhancer is a module for commlinks that adds its rating to matrix initative, and the customized interface is a modification that adds 1 to that as well.
- Cryptosense module allows you to interpret senses you don't actually have - which until Unwired came out, everyone assumed you could do anyway smile.gif
- Encephalon ads one to logic-linked skills, including matrix tests that use them, and rating 2 adds another die to any cracking and electronics skills when in AR or VR
- Math SPU adds 1 to electronic warfare tests involving encoding or decode (since you don't roll to encode, that means basically +1 to decrypt tests)
- Simsense Booster gives +1 initiative pass when operating in VR

I'm sorry to hear that Fortune, you of course are always welcome in my games. No offense taken of course biggrin.gif.

Games open for one more combat type.
Shadow
Your extra's sound good black, the only one I really have a problem with is optimization. However my concern would be people getting low response on their comms then running hi program levels. Since you didn't good to go. I especially like your characters personality, just don't let it get to out of control biggrin.gif
BlackHat
i'll do my best. wink.gif

As for optimization, I forget the actual wording, but basically, it cannot allow a progrma to run at more than double the rating it should normally be able to due to response/system limitations.

So, to run a rating 6 program, you need minimally a system 3 commlink. If you moved it to a system 1 MetaLink, it would run at rating 2.

Off the bat, it looks like you spent too many points on attributes, I think you're only allowed to spend half of your starting BP there (so 200).
Also, I don't play enough mages to know much about spell selection, but it would probably be nice to have a heal spell around - particularly in a game where the GM has indicated that combat be important.
Kerris
Good point about Heal... it's added (replaced Fling). I also replaced Mana Barrier with Improved Invisibility, which I realized I didn't have.

As for attributes, the 200 limit is for physical and mental attributes. It doesn't apply to Magic or Edge.
BlackHat
Ah, didn't see you lumped those together. I just saw "Attributes (240)" or whatever.
Looks good, though. yeah, Improved Invis is another good call.
Kerris
Drek... I just realized that I forgot the Perception skill. Drek drek drek. *looks for another 8 or 12 points somewhere*
BlackHat
Got a couple hundred nuyen? Visual and audio enhancers make a great "default-negator". biggrin.gif
NM: Looks like you already have +3 glasses
Kerris
Yeah, that might have to be my replacement for being unaware and easily distracted.

Glasses: "Hey! Hey! Something's going on!"
Rata: "Oh, is there?"

Edit: Also, I live on the refresh button. I'm a nerd like that.
Shadow
Kerris, I skimed her, she looks fine. Though if you don't have the perception skill you can't roll perception, even if you have a device that adds to perception. You can't add to what you don't have. Unless it is like a skill soft.

Damage hasn't posted again, so we may be down to just Jaun, Kerris, and Blackhat, the game coul use atl east one more.
BlackHat
If its a modified skill rating, you can't - but if its a dicepool bonus, I think you can.
if you have an intuition of 4, and no perception, your dice pool is a 3. So you're adding to something you have - a dice pool of 3.

Otherwise people who don't have the computer skill can't use programs, and you'd have ot have a point in a gun skill to benefit from smartlink or laser sights (or even your opponent being prone in melee, or any other dice pool modifier).
Fortune

Canon allows defaulting on Perception tests, and I don't recall any rules about outside devices or other modifiers not being applicable to the test. Is that a house rule of yours?

That being said, mages with no Perception suck! wink.gif

frown.gif

I'm trying to figure out what skill I want to drop a point from, to pick up one point in Perception. Computer is obviously the best one to drop from a metagame standpoint, but I want to keep a little of her hacker heritage. I might go with Astral Combat -1, Perception +1. I won't like it much, but hey... it's a trade off.
Shadow
Well yeah you can default at -3DP I believe.
Mister Juan
Alright! Character sheet pretty much finished, and I'm polishing the background. I should be finished tonight, or at the latest, tomorrow.
Glyph
I would be interested in the combat character slot. Basic role is close combat specialist, Bobby Malone, ork in a loud suit with an afro - think Napoleon Dynamite, or Nabeshin from Excel Saga. The kind of guy who looks like he's all talk, only he can actually back it up.

While I'm still tweaking the stats, I'll ask. Would you rather not use the martial arts rules from Augmentation? I have stuff like martial arts, and some of the new armors like form-fitting body armor and Securetech PPP. I could annotate it on the sheet, or, if you would rather not have to deal with it, I'll change him to a BBB/Street Magic build and use the points/Nuyen for other stuff.
Shadow
You can use them, just be ready to back up what you do with chapter and verse.
