Full Version: If YOU were a runner...
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
JeffSz
The "must have" gear post made me want to start this thread.

If YOU had to become a Shadowrunner for a living, what gear would you pack? Assume you had time to accrue the skills you'd need in order to use the equipment. I'll start with my list of generic must-haves from the other post, and add in the stuff I would bring as myself.

Since gear varies so widely depending on the job, assume you're outfitting for just another day in the sprawl - you're not planning on breaking in anywhere or going into a battle, but you know anything can happen. What would you have on your person and in the trunk of your car?

  • Survival skills and an unarmed combat skill. I'd probably learn a martial art as fast as I could.
  • Knife
  • Silenced, concealable pistol w/ gel rounds
  • Several of each kind of medical patch - stims, trauma patches, etc.
  • Cold hard cash, unused fake SIN on spare commlink, breath mints, deodorant
  • Linguasofts for: Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Orz'et (spelling?), Sperethiel
  • Mapsoft of the immediate geographical area
  • Commlink of course, loaded with eBooks, music, and my favorite movies; all software is Open Source
  • Really freaking good shoes and a warm jacket
  • Contact lenses with vision enhancements + earbuds with hearing enhancements
  • Favors done for others = favors I can call in when I'm in a bind.
  • A german shepherd or doberman - my best chummer, and the only living thing on the earth I could truly trust
  • SMG or assault rifle with tracers and gel rounds (in car)
  • Piano wire and work gloves (in car)
  • Toolbox w/ crowbar, screwdrivers, wrenches, electric drill etc. (in car)
  • Maglock passkey, cardkey, etc. (in car)

Critias
Bare minimum?

A good knife, some smokes, a lighter, a pack of gum, and a friendly face. Cigs, gum, lighter, and good attitude are to get most of the things you need from most of the people you'll ever meet. The knife's for the rest, with escalating weaponry from there as it's made available and necessary.
bernardo
I would need nothing except a datajack, skillwires and ALL datasofts, mapsofts, activesofts, linguasofts and knowsofts at maximum rating. After getting all the knowledge of the world would be a matter of time till the completion of my world domination plan... grinbig.gif
JeffSz
So Infinityzen is the paranoid gunbunny, Crities is the Face and a bit of a knife fighter, and bernardo would be... a skill and knowledge bunny?

Suppose i'd be a paranoid theifly type. The skills and equipment to break the locks, but ready to rabbit at the drop of a pin.
BlueMax
I would just panic and become Feral. I am not equipped in any possible way for a world like Shadowrun.
Dexim
My must have list:

On me
-"SINner" my personal 'link with high ratings sys/res/OS/fire and high rating programs. All in hidden mode, of course.
-"Saint" my disposable commlink of the moment.
-datajack
-a basic electronics kit
-the 2070 equivalent of the victorinox cybertool
-leatherman
-good boots and armored longcoat
-lighter
-taser
-shades with imagelink, smartlink, recording unit, and flare comp
-mapsoft
-Sting hold-out pistol

The car
-Gets from A to B with decent fuel mileage, mechanically sound but needs some bodywork so it looks like a old worn out Ares Anycar

In the trunk
-assortment of micro- and minidrones with various sensors or tools
-pair of heavy pistols and extra clips
-first-aid, survival, and tool kits
-towel (cause this hoopy frood knows where his is)
The Jake
I work in Information Security, so I guess if I were in SR, I'd be a Hacker."Matrix Support Specialist"/whatever. My daily skills sorta put me somewhere in the realm of hacker/spider/security architect with a splattering of level 2 business skills. In my personal life I spend a lot of time weight training and martial arts. I'd say I've got at least 10BP in different martial arts postiive quality.

Personally I am a fan of subtle, understated gear - although a solid assault rifle never hurt anyone except someone on the other end. devil.gif

As much as I love magic in game, I'd more than likely lean towards being a technomancer, which would have a large impact on my choice of gear.

I'd go:
- heavy pistol with sound supressor (I'm a fan of called shots with Ares Vipers, at least up until SR4) with fake licenses.
- multiple fake SINs - at least one with diplomatic immunity,
- commlink (or if I was a TN, a fake commlink),
- a ridiculous number of skillsofts, pirated with agents autoupdating them (verified as 100% kosher before I load them) for almost any situation.

In most situations, I'd prefer to talk my way out of (social skills and a creative mind generally goes further than most gear I've found). When that fails, martial arts + athletics + dodge works well.

Having said that, for when the shit REALLY hits the fan:
- survival knife,
- Ingram Smartgun,
- Franchi SPAS 22 shotgun,
- Ares Alpha Combat Gun,
- Nitama Optimum (the pseudo pulse rifle from Aliens),
- Barrett 121 Sniper Rifle,
- GE Vindicator,
- Thunderstruck Gauss Rifle,
- Enfield Gl67 Grenade Launcher,
- a liberal supply of custom grenades with everything from DMSO/cyanide to nanites,
- a liberal supply of plastic explosives and detonators,
- lots of customised armor (lined coat + FFBA by default)
- milspec armor with ruthenium polymers,

And as my getaway vehicle...
a GMC Banshee, again, with ruthenium polymers ("omfg a CLOAKING DEVICE!! ROFL! LOL").

- J.
Falrien
Well, if it was me living in the shadows... I am a novellist and I work in retail part-time, with lots of martial arts thrown in too...

So:
  • Waterproof SINNer genuine commlink w/ high firewall but average otherwise
  • Photo-reactive sunglasses with imagelink, recorder, magnification and enhancement, Smartlink and lowlight
  • Buds with enchancement, audiolink etc and recorder
  • Linguasofts for French, German, Spanish, chinese and Spirethi (I am working on my natual Japanese)
  • Fake 'link full of interesting hacking tools and a couple of agents that are a damn sight better than me at hacking.
  • Good pair of Sketchers
  • Good leather boots
  • Form-fitting armour
  • My fighting sticks and all my Aikido Licences

For shadier areas like my shithole hometown:
  • Predator with standard and Gel-filled clips
  • My live-blade swords and Tanto
  • My Rifle that I actually have a RL lisence for
  • One of those snazzy micro-drones to check out dodgy areas
  • My little pooch, with Bonelacing and plating to keep her safe

Considering I'm a gunbunny IRL, along with being paranoid and suffering from PTSD, I guess it fits hu?

I do actually own an ungodly number of firearms and weapons. 3 shotguns, 5 rifles, 3 pistols (not counting two CAS display pieces), several hand made swords of varies styles, untold number of knives, and of course the junk swords/knives/etc that look really good but are actually worth crap in a fight. Before you ask, I collect. Two of my firearms are ~100 years old, with another rifle about 60 years old.

I prefer to think of myself as just an average rogue mastermind hehehe

Graushwein
In addition to most of the stuff others have listed.
I would have a just a few guns myself, because I am not that good with them. But would make up for it with drones.

3-4 small pimped out sneaky drones with autopistols that shadow me everywhere.
1 Flying drone to watch for suspicious events outside.
2 Flying drones which are specifially antidrone hunters
2 Doberman Drones in the trunk, with Ares Assault rifle with underslung grenade launcher
5+ pilot and autosofts on all drones. And the car.
2 quick identity change bags in back of car.

Car
Armored
Runflat tires
Tirespike launcher in back
Oil sprayer in back
Trunk has mounts for the Dobermans to hang onto so that they can fire backwards as the open trunk door adds extra protection to me.
Faux back seat that opens up and raises a 360 degree turreted minigun and rocket launcher out the hatch on the roof.

I don't fight unless I control the terms. If not on my terms I'm running and YOU DON'T WANT TO FOLLOW ME!
InfinityzeN
Damn, I need one of those little spyball or spyfly drones too. ARG!
Critias
Oh, I'm a bit of a gunbunny, too, mind. I just know that they're much harder to take with me everywhere than a decent knife is.

No armor?
On the lenguage side if I got it right there are more dialect of chinese (mandarin, cantonese, etc.), and what would you get an italian linguasoft for? (also, I wouldn't take one for sure biggrin.gif ).
If you want a dog go for an hellhound, it may attract a little attenction but it's astraly active and it can put up a better fight; if the city is Chicago I'd go for one of those bug-sensitive lizards.
By the way no DocWagon contract?

Italian = mafia

Docwagon doesn't go everywhere.

I made a homebrew competitor to Docwagon once, for a game i ran a while ago. They would go anywhere, even corp property, and their rates were lower than Docwagon. The downside? You gave them exclusive organ harvesting rights in the event of your death (which they would keep even if you terminated your contract), and agreed in writing that any medication or treatment administered to you could be experimental.

Platinum memberships required exclusive rights to the stem cells of any children you conceived while under contract; these memberships however also included a life insurance policy that granted the contract holder a guaranteed "Reprisals Clause" - in the event of the policy holder's violent or suspicious death, someone would be sent to privately "investigate" the cause of death and retaliate to the fullest extent of their ability.
JFixer
Actually, English = Mafia and Whiskey = Mafia more than Italian = Mafia. In Seattle, the Finnegans are the family in charge.
Tyro
Unarmed Physical Adept. I don't like guns. In no particular order, and with apologies for the items I've stolen from previous posts:

Really good shoes are a must.
Everyone needs a good knife, for cutting rope if nothing else.
A good lighter and several disposables, since you never know when you'll need to make fire.
Credit card toolkit and multitool.
Disposable comm slaved via fiber-optics to a skinlinked no-wireless comm (I don't mean hidden mode, I mean the thing has an off switch for its wireless which stays firmly in the "off" position; wireless connectivity is done through the dummy). High Firewall, decent program loadout including black IC and tacsoft running on the hidden commlink.
Multiple fake SINs, with a SIN answer program to help me answer verification questions (Awesome idea, InfinityzeN!)
Hardliner weapon foci with Personalized Grip if the GM allows it.
FFBA with thermal dampening and nonconductivity upgrades, hood kept retracted in public. Urban Explorer jumpsuit with a built-in medkit, ruthenium polymers, chemical & fire protection; the hood of the FFBA would also be ruthenium-treated, as would my boots and Hardliners.
Contacts with image link, flare compensation and vision enhancement. Shades with low-light and thermo.
Earbuds with audio enhancement and spatial recognizer.
Smoke, IR smoke and flashbang grenades, vacuum-sealed and made with ceramic components.
A flashpak.
Yes, all of these are on me. You can hide a lot in the pockets of a jumpsuit, esp. if the grenades are made to look like something else.
Clothing in a wide range of quality and styles, for fitting in better.
Flashlight with bright white, low-light, red low-light, and thermo modes. Would that last make it usable as a low-powered heater?
A couple of shaped charges for stubborn doors, kept in my vehicle's smuggling compartment.
Two or three collapsible spy drones for covert recon, small and compact enough to keep on my belt without being noticeable.
Certified credsticks with varied amounts of cash.
Linguasofts for Japanese, Sperethiel, Or'zet, and Russian (Vory) at a minimum (assuming Seattle, as I live on the Eastside); more as I can afford them and think they'll see use.
DETAILED mapsofts of the greater city, above and below ground, including things like sewer, water, and electrical grids and any blueprints I can get my hands on. A GPS unit set to auto-map as I go.
Bottled water and MRE's in case I'm away from home for a while (in car).
Zip-ties.
That's just a quick and dirty list; I don't feel like making a project of it just now.

As for transportation, something nondescript which would blend into a variety of neighborhoods, with modifications in approximate order of priority: Morphing license plate, grid spoofer, ruthenium coating, airtight & lead-lined smuggling compartment, a souped-up engine and a very good Pilot program. Theft deterrent (the one that zaps people). Run-flats. Concealed armor and passenger armor. A hidden smoke projector with tanks of regular smoke, IR smoke, and something nastier (tear gas, maybe even breathtaker). Oil sprayer.
Tachi
I guess I'd be a Gunbunny/Armorer.

Clothes- black, khaki, or camo cargo pants; t-shirt (usually with something offensive on it like 'I'd Rather Be Waterboarding'); over shirt (unbuttoned, used to hide the belt)
Hat- black
Boots- black, polycarbonate-toe
Reinforced belt- black, to hold gear and my weight if climbing (Blackhawk Rescue-Rigger)
Multi-tool
Knife (Kershaw Ken Onion assisted-open)
Knife (CRKT Dragon- 5 inch fixedblade CQK-knife)
Holster (Blackhawk CQC)
Pistol (M&P .40, loaded with hollow-points)
Extra Magazines (3 of hollow-points, 1 frangibles, 1 AP)
Detachable Pistol Light (Blackhawk Xiphos pistol light/strobe)
Kubaton key-chain
Lighter
Cigs
Longcoat (armored- consequently, I'm saving money to have armor installed in my favorite leather jacket IRL)
SINs, cash, and Licenses (including my CCW)
Cellpho.. er... Commlink, high firewall

These are a few of my favorite things... I carry/wear each of these every day now (except the AP ammo and armored jacket). Sorry, no whiskers on kittens. And now that I've read this thread, I'm gonna have to buy some stuff to add.

As a shadowrunner I'd add multiple dosses, multiple vehicles, multiple commlinks, multiple bugout plans/bags/vehicles, silencers, Weapons (modified to mission)

mad.gif Hey, Are you accusing me of something? mad.gif

P.S.
Crime is crime, comunication is needed for it (just like for about anything else) so the mafia will just speak the linguage(s) most used in the area (for exemple, do you think that they era going to force seatllelites to learn english before enforcing protection racket?). So if the trip is in an italian city and ou don't know the lenguage it's advisable to aquire the linguasoft, otherwise it's probably not worth the effert/money spent; than again I won't use a linguasoft to speak my own native lenguage (unless I want to disguise my own accent).
Brother Julian
Let's see, IRL I am a truck driver. Add my past career in the army as an electronics repairer and I suppose I would be a Rigger.

Assuming that I was working the shadows I would have:

A modified Zuggsmachine tractor with trailer, rigger gear, smugliing compartments, morphing plates, etc.

Industrius Line Jumpsuit

Tricked out comlink

Ares Predator

Chrome/Bioware useful to Riggers

Automotive Shop(at home)

A lot of useful contacts.

Ehhh... Orbital Strike...

...Dodged...
InfinityzeN
Not going to happen. Dodging an orbital strike is like dodging cows from space. It just isn't done.
pbangarth
You believe that only because nobody has done it... yet.
IceKatze
hi hi

Dodging an orbital strike really depends on how mobile the target is and how large the projectile is. There will be a few minutes between launch and impact, between which the target could move out of the blast radius. Due to plasma interference that occurs when any object traveling at orbital velocities enters the atmosphere, course correction during flight is difficult at best.

Of course, the target would either have to know about the launch or be already moving (at which point a launch would probably be halted until the target stops)
InfinityzeN
I was thinking more along the lines of a nuclear pumped x-ray laser, rather then a physical orbital strike.

QUOTE
Another idea to come from the SDI project was the nuclear-pumped X-ray laser. This was essentially an orbiting atomic bomb, surrounded by laser media in the form of glass rods; when the bomb exploded, the rods would be bombarded with highly-energetic gamma-ray photons, causing spontaneous and stimulated emission of X-ray photons in the atoms making up the rods. This would lead to optical amplification of the X-ray photons, producing an X-ray laser beam that would be minimally affected by atmospheric distortion and capable of destroying ICBMs in flight. The X-ray laser would be a strictly one-shot device, destroying itself on activation.
IceKatze
hi hi

Bomb pumped X-ray lasers are fine for blowing stuff up in a vacuum, but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on which side you are on) X-rays are absorbed by the earth's atmosphere. Thor strikes were based on the actual project developed by Boeing with the same name that basically involved dropping a telephone pole shaped piece of tungsten on a target.
