Okay.. So I am closing in on the start date for my new SR game. But I'm starting to feel the crunch for prep, and am hoping you guys can help. I need a good NPC/Contact file and can't find the time to develop my own...
Tell me about your favorite NPCs, the great contacts that get used all the time. Give me the name/gender/race/age and a little background and any special notes you may use for running these characters.
The game itself is running in present timeline (2070ish) and I'm going for a street level detective style campaign, so the filthier, lowdown, vicious and perverse the NPC, the better.
I look picking through your suggestions.

Jeeves Rockafella
Fixer of the Stars, and anyone else who can meet his price

Jeeves mostly handles things for Stars; ie escort, bodyguard, items of interest from water from the Tirs to sands of Egypt, and so on
Rockafella also searches for the hottest new bands, managing them from the shadows
because he supplies to the Entertainment Business equally ( and has keys to closets), most Corps leave him alone while going through him for certain black ops
Sauder-Krupp was very impressed recently by a team hired by Jeeves, in which the group was hired to protect a SK Johnson

contact ratings: connection 6, loyalty ?? (depends on the person)

Jeeves is eccentric in how he may hire a runner team: they may have to play a song during auditions for a club band
be standup comedians
be waiters while quietly receiving their info via commlink while Jeeves has a business dinner

Rockafella bases his payment on how the runners conduct themselves. Runners who keep their cool and go with the situation stand to make more nuyen then ones who refuse to play along

hope this helps

Mr Fingers (Talismonger) is a surly shaven-headed ork who sells some decent stuff, if you avoid the Cascade Ork "crafts" displayed to entice the tourists ("art" that is turned out on a computer-guided laser lathe). He also sells herbal remedies and drugs (peyote and marijuana). He has a huge, shaggy dog named Killer who always seems to be sleeping. Mr. Fingers doesn't need a dog, though, because he is a mean S.O.B. with a sharp knife. He got his name from his habit of cutting a finger off of any shoplifter he catches - he keeps them in a jar of alcohol by the door.

Mick Frosser (Fence) is a pudgy, fussily neat man with pale, slicked back hair, watery blue eyes, and a weak chin, who wears CAS-style suits. He runs a pawn shop, dealing in contraband such as guns, drugs, and BTLs as well. He gives off bad vibes, and there are several nasty rumors floating around about his vices, but you don't always have to like them to deal with them, and Mick is a convenient and relatively reliable fence.

Maxie (Nightclub Owner) is a thin, sour-faced woman who wears men's suits and mirrorshades. The latter hide her habit of assensing people astrally - she is a hermetic mage, and always has a few bound elementals on "standby". She runs the Mystic Monsoon, a trendy little club that caters to an assorted crowd of goths, new agers, elf posers, 'runner wannabes, and furtive corporate types. Maxie is a good source of gossip, and can sometimes hook people up if they are looking for work or illicit thrills. She makes people nervous, not because of the elementals, but because she has a dachshund, named Wilbur, who always tries to hump people's legs.

Smiley. Everyone loves Smiley!

Qu Yi: A Triad boss of unspecified power; offices in an opium den named the Blue Lotus. (Originally in Hong Kong, but can be moved.) Male Chinese human, a young 70, cropped white hair and a Fu Manchu. Very quiet. Very controlled. Never shouts, never loses composure. When he's mad, he's quiet and cold. He's a very scary man and not to be trifled with.
The Jake
Lt. Melissa "Missy" Starkweather: Lieutenant within Lone Star Department of Paranormal Investigations. After working with my PCs on a recent string of paranormal busts where she got the kudos, Missy is my PCs inside contact within the Star. They are smart enough not to test her loyalty but she's quite useful at collecting info on people wanted by the Star and certain magical threats or investigations. Missy happens to be ork as well, meaning she's had to work twice as hard to get noticed and promoted. She is a full hermetic magician and has the Guts quality. She's probably the favorate NPC in my campaign at the moment and there is a semi-romantic thing happening between her and one of the PCs atm (nothing has happened but it's been fun roleplaying).

"Unkle Nikki": A Level 6/Loyalty 5 contact for one of my PCs, Unkle Nikki is a very high ranking Vory member from Russia, recently immigrated to Seattle to shore up the Vory's North American operations. Has a habit of asking for favors but making them sound like he's doing you a favor and saying no would be the most unreasonable thing in the world. Also reknown for extreme torture and punishment for people who fail him.

Alfonse Hernandez "Mr Big" (Mafioso, Dwarf)- A well connected up and coming would be crime boss who cut his way out of the ganger scene and into the mafia despite his mixed heritage. Mr Big made his bones from an early age by being twice as ruthless as any other button man, and now that he has finally made himself into something at the 'almost dead' age of 37, he overindulges in everything. fast cars, expensive suits, foriegn supermodels- Mr Big loves flaunting his wealth as means of establishing superiority. He also suffers from an extreme inferiority complex regarding his height; he often paces across conference tables while his underlings sit in their seats and is very careful with his conversation to avoid the words 'small' or 'short' -and his long time underlings have trained themselves not to use those words at all. Anything that can be taken as a short joke (or even use of a word like 'halfer') will induce a flurry of italian/atzlanner profanities and in most cases a pistol shot to the kneecap. He 'fixes' on the street level for a variety of 'simple (never small) jobs, mr J's on occasion for his would be criminal empire, and fences some stolen property (mostly arts or weapons). He tries very hard to stay 'italian' when in business mode, but when agitated or upset drifts into ganger/spanish.

Kinsley Jones (Lone Star Internal Affairs division, Ork) "Go-home Jones"- Kinsley is one of the most feared IAD Lts in Seattle. A well educated criminology/psychology double major, he is polite, impeccably groomed, and soft spoken at all times. He lives for his job, taking a very subdued glee in rooting out any and all signs of corruption in Lone Star, mostly. "Go-home Jones" spent most of his first four years either doing the footwork for an investigation,or living in his office while he turned it into an arena of condemnation for whatever crooked cop he was ferreting out. Now, he seems to constantly be tracking cases,to the point that other officers suspect he's using something to stay awake. For runners being cornered by a crooked cop, Jones can be their best friend (until he gets his conviction,at least), for runners bribing lone star cops to look the other way, Jones will not sleep until he brings the entire weight of the law down on all the offending parties. Jones talks almost entirely in leading questions, and will attempt to twist any response into the one he is searching for. His implanted cyber is focused almost entirely on recording equipment, and he keeps his office secured by an almost paranoid level of security- wards, locks, white noise generators and so forth.

Runs-the-numbers(Bookie,Human male) A middle aged pueblo immigrant who operates a fairly successful gambling ring in Seattle, r-t-n knows everybody (or at least somebody else who knows them), he's the go-to guy for information or an introduction, but you'll probably have to place a few bets to loosen his lips. R-t-n overdoes his heritage to an obscene degree, he's constantly reminding people of 'the way his people do things' to attempt to keep the upper hand in negotiations. Someone wanting exceptionally sensitive information may have to endure a 'sweat' with r-t-n, who is usually interrupted a few minutes into it by an 'important deal'.

Gina "FXpress" Patel (Wannabe Media Producer / Connection 2): Wage slave job by day, blogger and media producer by night. Spends most of her evenings downloading and modding simsense tracks (mostly bootleg porn). She's responsible for a number of "re-cut" sims, including a semi-(in)famous multiPOV one that involves Tacoma's mayor (faked) fucking a llama (real).

Kaito Lange (Wage Slave / Connection 1): Recently evicted from his apartment (he lost too much money gambling). Currently living out of his cubicle. He is terribly embarassed by the whole incident and would very much like it if no one ever found out about it. He's been leaking info to a rival company to try and earn enough nuyen to keep the bookie's leg breakers at bay.

I love this one. Will definitely be stealing that.
Does anyone use contacts fashioned from real world people or celeberities?

One that was handed down to me in 2nd edition, who I've since passed on, is based on a real world celebrity. The GM that gave me this contact said it had been given to him, so I am not the originator, nor do I know who was. However, I've loved it and have grown it as needed. What I do know, is that this contact has often been used as a useful but comedic slap to a player that didn't define their contacts. That being said, I'd like to introduce you to:

Mr. Rodgers (Fixer / Rating 6). Mr. Rodgers is everyone's favorite neighbor, and expects all of his neighbors to act neighborly. If you call him looking for information, he will speak to his friends his "neighborhood of make-believe". While he doesn't have much in the way of merchandise himself, he works as a middle man for everyone in his large neighbor. Any purchases made through him will be delivered by a man in an old US Postal Service outfit as part of his "Speedy Delivery". When Mr. Rodgers first began he was limited to Seattle, and the mailman was an Ork on a Dodge Scoot that felt the pay was well worth the indignity. As the world has grown, so has Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood. To use an old expression, there probably isn't anyone in the shadows that is more than 6 degrees removed from this fine fixer.

One of my favorites from my old GM-

Dr. Stone - Ghoul Street Doc
Dr Stone operates out of an old DocWagon, usually parked in a random parking lot. He tends to move around a lot. He is an excellent surgeon, who had the misfortune of becoming infected, and now makes a living installing and upgrading cyberware for those in the shadows. He is also pretty good when one needs emergency medical care. And who can resist a doctor that is willing to take payment in the form of dead bodies...

Brother Jim (Cult Member): Brother Jim thinks the world, and everyone on it, is going to Hell. From his street corner pulpit (really an old milk crate), he preaches his strange version of the gospel, all old fire and brimstone Christianity, but with significant errors. He goes on and on for hours about fire, damnation, and the lake of fire. Everyone who passes by is a sinner, a fornicator, and a pervert. If you don't join him in a rousing "Amen," you can bet he'll be singling you out for more of him verbal abuse. Brother Jim drags his servile, conservatively dressed wife with him almost everywhere he goes. He likes to show her off as an example of how women should be behave and dress. Not surprisingly, Brother Jim has more than a few skeletons in his closet. First is his addiction to BTL, which he almost can't resist these days. The second is that his wife is under the effects of a high quality persona fix, which is the only reason she's as docile as she appears.
Notes: Prejudice (Independent Women, Outspoken), Prejudice (Sinners, Outspoken), Addiction (BTL, Strong)
Uses: Non-violent antagonist
Brother Jim is based on a real world campus preacher named Brother Jed.

Here's a more recent thread on this subject. It's an amalgamation of a whole bunch of NPC's that the GM's around here have created for their own campaigns, posted for public consumption.
Thank CanRay for starting this NPC Collection thread. Haven't been any new posts in it in long while, but it's chock full of non-player goodness.

I have a ghoul doc in my campaign. Street name is 'Bones' (har-har) - basically a Jewish doctor (plastic surgeon/cyber-tech for Seattle's elite and wealthy). Was infected early in his career as a trauma surgeon for Seattle General. Has been able to mask his misfortune through extensive cosmetic surgery, family wealth and privileged family name as well as owning his own practise.
