Liber> so happy SR4 has reached another anniversary. Great Job everyone!
[Stephen.McQuillan] Hello and good morning/afternoon all. Thanks for joining us for the chat today. We are going to have a few technical difficulties today as we run unmoderated
[Stephen.McQuillan] If you have questions, throw them in if you must, and one of us will filter them in to the appropriate order. Or hold on to them until we call for it.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Today's Agenda is : Shadowrun Missions Release Schedule; State of the Campaign ; Looking Forward; Writing for Catalyst; Art and You; Open Q&A
[Stephen.McQuillan] For everyone who has been watching recently, we started releasing Shadowrun Missions for NYC in March of this year. They are on a monthly release schedule with March seeing March SRM03-00 Everyone's Your Friend Sometimes following up on a job really means following. You've been hired to track down an old acquaintance who's fled across the continent.
[Stephen.McQuillan] April saw 03-01, May got Block War, and within the next few days, SRM 03-03 will be released
[Stephen.McQuillan] 03-03 is Burning Bridges: The voice on the other end of the comm sounds desperate. The kind that pays well. Then he asked, "How much do you know about demolitions?"
>> Casper has joined room #Shadowrunchat
[Stephen.McQuillan] At this point we have a release schedule locked in through March of 2010 with Missions. On the other side of the schedule are the Manhattan eBooks.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Rotten Apple was the first Manhattan eBook, building on the information in Runner Havens and designed to support the Missions Campaign. Rotten Apple 2 is scheduled for a Fall release and goes into information about what happens outside of Manhattan in some of the other Boroughs
>> TKDNinjaInBlack has joined room #Shadowrunchat
Lime2K> Are there any plans to release the Manhattan books/the Missions adventures in print at some point? (Maybe as a collection or two, like Redbrick did with their Earthdawn Shards?)
[Stephen.McQuillan] Aaron just reminded me that they aren't Manhattan eBooks, but rather New York City eBooks
JohnDunn> There are no plans for print publication of any of the PDF exclusives, Lime2K.
[Stephen.McQuillan] (Though anyone who finds me at GenCon can look at what I did with some of the Denver Missions to print them together.)
[Stephen.McQuillan] Questions about the Release Schedule?
Casazil> Will demo team member be getting new missions soon to prepare for conventions
Casper> Could we get a single file or folder to download that contains all of the Denver missions in one fell swoop.
JohnDunn> Demo team members get new missions when they schedule them to run. Currently, scenarios 6-11 are exclusives for Origins and GenCon.
JohnDunn> THere are no plans to compile the Denver missions into a single download for a number of reasons, including bandwidth.
[Stephen.McQuillan] August 09 SRM03-05 In and Out; September 09 SRM 03-06 Food Poisoning; October 09 SRM 03-07 Knight at the Opera; November 09 SRM 03-08 Firestorm; December 09 SRM 03-09 Something Completely Different; January'10 SRM 03-10 Spin Control; February'10 SRM 03-11 Pound of Flesh; March'10 SRM 03-12 Elevator Ride to Hell
Casper> Exclusives as in only at the Cons?
Casazil> I have a convention Aug.22 23 can I schudle the new Missions 6 11 for it
Caleb_Fullerene> So am I right in assuming then that for 06-12, demo members will have to wait until the month they are released to run outside of those two cons (this including other cons).
JohnDunn> That's correct Casper
Lime2K> Owwww... baaaaaad puns there...
JohnDunn> No, Casazil, they will not yet be available for conventions that CGL is not attending.
JohnDunn> Caleb, one month before release.
Casazil> no ofence but I'm finding it harder and harder to do my demo duties when I've nothing new to show off to the players at conventions
Casper> thats understandable
[Stephen.McQuillan] If there are no further questions, we will move on to the State of the Campaign. With 4 Missions released by the end of the month and several more on final approach for the summer conventions, there are already factions at work within Manhattan and abroad trying to push their agendas.

[Stephen.McQuillan] The NYC Campaign as you have probably noticed is examining corporate politics and dealing with the political situation between a Corporate Enclave bought and paid for and the governments who sold it off in ruins and see a shiny wealthy population.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Runners who do jobs in New York will find that they may be approached by corporate and anti-corp actions
[Stephen.McQuillan] In exchange for side work, tasks that runners may do anyways, these affilates are willing to offer additional perks
Aaron> But, of course, nobody's actually accepted any of these positions. Nope, nobody at all.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Currently, not all of the MDC members have gotten involved. Some may be biding their time to watch and wait, others are laying down their agendas in shadows that are deep enough they haven't seen the light of day.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Questions about the State of the Campaign?
RevTyko> With the upcoming missions taking runners intercontinental, is it safe to assume that these agendas are going to be crossing national borders as well?
>> Casper has left room #Shadowrunchat
>> Wesley_Street has left room #Shadowrunchat
[Stephen.McQuillan] I'm not sure what you mean about intercontinental, but yes, the agendas do cross national borders. Though technically, crossing the Brooklyn bridge is a border crossing as you enter/exit the UCAS
Tycho> Will there be Corp secondary objectives which will be totalle against each other (something like A has to kill a NPC, B has to protect him)? And will this lead to some PC vs PC action, which may be frustrating?
Aaron> I'm assuming, Tycho, that your question isn't a request. =i)
Trask> I have actually done those sort of missions. They can be entertaining, but they are frustrating.
>> Wesley_Street has joined room #Shadowrunchat
Tycho> It depends on the players, if they know each other well, there mostly is no problem, but an a converntion with more or less strangers, this things can turn ugly...
Aaron> Without giving too much away, I'm sure it's possible for secondary objectives to be at odds with one another. The good news is that the affiliation system is designed to always be secondary to the adventure. The intent is that the fact that the affiliate objectives are optional, coupled with the pressure to keep affiliation secret, will mitigate if not nullify any potential game-stopping stand-offs.
JohnDunn> As an aside, it's worth mentioning that there were near univeral requests from players to make the NYC campaign substantially more challenging for the team and individuals than the Denver campaign. I believe the SRM team have chosen a number of different approaches to this issue.
[Stephen.McQuillan] If those are all the questions for the State of the Campaign, let's start Looking Forward. As has been mentioned, there are several Missions set for a summer release. This year we will also have the SRM Scramble at GenCon. As in previous years, the Scramble is a one-time run event which prunes the tree of choices. The campaign is taking direction, and sending in After Action Reports for Missions that you have played or run, will allow your team's choices to impact the outcome of certain events.
[Stephen.McQuillan] The second NYC eBook will delve into Brooklyn, the Bronx and the Organized Crime groups working in the Boroughs.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Questions?
>> Liber has left room #Shadowrunchat
[Stephen.McQuillan] If you are interested in joining the Missions Author team, we are always accepting proposals. I do recommend looking at the Submission Guidelines or reaching out to Aaron or I if you don’t know where to start.
Trask> Beyond the major criminal families, are there plans to include smaller, yet dangerous criminal groups, street gangs in the upcoming eBook?
[Stephen.McQuillan] Many of the Missions writers have taken the step from Missions on to the Catalyst Freelancer Team, so if you have never been published or gone through the editing process, we are a great starting point. Also John Dunn and the other SR Developers keep a close eye on the Missions team for upcoming talent.
JohnDunn> @Trask: Yes, though the 10 Gangs eBook project will also include, um, 10 Street Gangs.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Any questions?
[Stephen.McQuillan] Art and You. The new Missions layouts are done in the same style as other CGL releases, which means a lot of art in the releases as well.
[Stephen.McQuillan] We are always looking for new artists and mapmakers for Missions, and like with our writing team, the artists are looked at and may be able to take the step from Missions to Freelancer as well.
[Stephen.McQuillan] and since that brings us to the Open Q&A, we can mix art questions with open questions
TKDNinjaInBlack> Is there any way that aspiring artists can be briefed on what to draw and run with specific ideas?
>> Coldan has joined room #Shadowrunchat
JohnDunn> @TKDNIB: If you're interested in doing artwork for Shadowrun Missions, please drop me an e-mail at missions@shadowrun4.com with a link to your portfolio.
Aaron> Incidentally, if you do decide to submit work for us, take a good look at what has come before. We've seen submissions that do things like kill off important NPCs, or break the rules, or contradict prior established canon, and they make us sad.
TKDNinjaInBlack> Well then I guess starting to compile a portfolio would be the first place to start...
JohnDunn> @TKDNIB: That's an excellent plan. Any freelance work with any company will require that.

Caleb_Fullerene> For those rare Shadowrunners that dabble in Chemistry as a day job, how should players handle moving Chemistry from a Knowledge Skill to an Active Skill for GenCon in accordance with SR4A?
Aaron> The suggestion about looking at previous Missions adventures goes for art too, by the bye. If you have a favorite NPC or moment from an adventure, feel free to show us your sketch.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Question: 5. Ok, here’s a bone lacing question. In Augmentation, it says you can’t mix metal bone lacing with either ceramic or kevlar bone lacing. BUT, metal bone lacing is metal molecules interlaced with bone cells and ceramic (or kevlar) bone lacing only COAT the bones. . Sooo technically a character should be able to have both, right? …Right? Answer: While I applaud you for trying, no. Missions uses the Official rules and Errata.
Aaron> I believe Chemistry became a skill in Arsenal. Give me a moment to check.
Caleb_Fullerene> Chemistry was a knowledge skill in Arsenal, the Active Skill was an optional rule, and thus not applicable to Missions.
TKDNinjaInBlack> It was also recreated as an active skill for SR4A
>> Mike_W. has left room #Shadowrunchat
TKDNinjaInBlack> so do the missions follow 4 or 4A?
[Stephen.McQuillan] 6. So as I’m reading through Augmentation, I see certain penetration values for diseases are positive, and some are negative. Here’s a list: HSV-5 (1), Tuberculosis (-3), VITAS-3 (-2), Bedlam (1), Croisade (2) If we handle penetration just like we handle armor piercing in combat, negative AP is better and reduces armor and positive adds to it. Does this mean that our viruses with positive penetration work less against protection systems and actually add dice? I know this should be a simple answer, but whenever an increase armor notation is used for AP, it is denoted with a plus symbol with the number (ie, +2). With all of these penetration values, there is no addition symbol and has me wondering if they truly add value or if we just forgot the negatives? Answer: Yes, actually if you have the appropriate protections and get slapped with a face full of Bedlam, you get extra dice. The same way that AP works.

Aaron> It was also "promoted" on p. 78, Arsenal, but as an optional rule.
Aaron> Now that it's official, it's fair game for Missions, of course.
JohnDunn> Shadowrun Missions always follows the latest published edition, so SR4A currently.
Aaron> I believe the quesion being asked is something like "I've got a Chemistry Knowledge Skill, but now that it's an Active Skill, can I shift that over?" Am I right?
JD> Are the mods on a run somewhere? Is that why they can't be found?
TKDNinjaInBlack> Cool, thanks for the disease answer.
[Stephen.McQuillan] We have hit the end of our time. If you still have questions, post them here and I will get answers for you
Caleb_Fullerene> Aaron: Yes, that's correct. Obviously it'd take reworking skills allocated, but yes.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Otherwise, good gaming and I will see everyone next time.
Err 3683. Flooding detected. Your chat may be disconnected.
RevTyko> thanks!
Wesley_Street> Thank you!
Coldan> The programm option 'shredder' in unwired is mentioned only for attack programms, but with SR4A you use Exploit to crash programms. So the option is now for exploit programms?
Caleb_Fullerene> Thanks guys!
Trask> Thank you
Aaron> Our policy is not to "retcon" characters. For many characters, this worked in their favor. I'm afraid it works against the Chemists. Of course, if your game is a private one and not played at conventions or at other tables, then we're not interested in stopping you from doing what you like, but for the public campaign we've got to stick to the rules.
Caleb_Fullerene> Aaron: Alright! Thanks!
Lime2K> Thanks very much - glad I was actually off this morning and able to participate (instead of pleading for transcripts afterward) ^_^!
JohnDunn> Thanks to all for attending, good gaming!
Tycho> Thank You

TKDNinjaInBlack> Quick Question: Who did the write up for Neo-Tokyo's Yakuza factions and what were some of your biggest influences?
Lime2K> Ah, I didn't know that - I only knew about the ones posted on SR4.com
>> Ed has left room #Shadowrunchat
TKDNinjaInBlack> Did the big trend to present the new Yakuza as thugs and lunatics in Japanese media play a big part?
Aaron> Stand by for the drawing winner, folks!
AncientHistory> I wrote it.
[Stephen.McQuillan] Ahh, yeah. Adam's plate is generally full to overflowing, so I try to help out and get the answers out as soon as possible, even if it isn't pretty and laid out
AncientHistory> As for influences, I was reading a lot on Japan at the time. Let me see if I can dig out a list.
Aaron> And the winner of the drawing ... the prize of one Mission of your choice ... is ...
Aaron> ... is ...
Aaron> TYCHO!!
Caleb_Fullerene> *cheers for Tycho*
AncientHistory> Yay Tycho
Lime2K> *yaaay* Congrats, Tycho!
AncientHistory> The Japanese Mafia: Yakuza, Law, and State by Peter Hill
Aaron> Please send me your email address (private message would be fine) and the adventure you'd like, and I'll get arrangements kicked off.
Aaron> ... if you're Tycho, that is.
AncientHistory> Yakuza Diary: Doing Time in the Japanese Underworld by Christopher Seymour
Tycho> thanks alot!

AncientHistory> And Out by Natsuo Kirino, translated by Stephen Snyder
AncientHistory> Granted, I didn't have space (or motivation, in some cases) to include even a tenth of that material.
AncientHistory> Filmwise, I gotta say Takeshi Kitano is a great influence.
TKDNinjaInBlack> granted::smile
AncientHistory> Did that answer you question?
>> JD has left room #Shadowrunchat
TKDNinjaInBlack> I was asking because I've started to notice in Japanese cinema a visible difference between the honorable business man and the psychotic punk yakuza.
Caleb_Fullerene> *bows* It's been fun gents, ladies, and Shadowrunners, but I must be off. I need to look for some jobs to transfer knowledge of a subject into the applicable hands-on skills that only a little good Karma can help

AncientHistory> It's in the works, Coldan. Best I can say.
AncientHistory> Doo doo doo
AncientHistory> I feel like Ferris Bueller at the end of the movie.
Ryu> Greetings of the Daytime. Is the chat still running, or not?
TKDNinjaInBlack> I just finished reading up on Biodrones and must say I am freaking frightened of what I'll see in Running Wild
AncientHistory> It ended, Ryu. Sorry.
[Stephen.McQuillan] I hope I don't disappoint then
TKDNinjaInBlack> Oh, that's your baby then?
Ryu> No problem, I was almost sure I would miss it. A shame.
AncientHistory> We
[Stephen.McQuillan] Ryu--I'm still taking questions to post them. We have a transcript on DSF
Ryu> Thanks for the offer. If I had questions, I would have submitted them beforehand. Thanks anyway!

[Stephen.McQuillan] TKD--I did the heavy lifting with a lot of input from the Freelancer team. my draft is covered in comments from nearly everyone

AncientHistory> <bites_tongue>
AncientHistory> I did? I mean, I did!
AncientHistory> Yes, there's material on St. Louis in Vice.
AncientHistory> (Praise be to the editors)

AncientHistory> Well, it got that brief write-up in Shadows of North America, so...one?
