If he wants to spend hundrads of dollars just to horde multiple copies of a book that a lot of other people deserve, that's just great. But if he's gonna come here and whine about how he didn't get it at the exact second he asked for it, all the while he could have been actually being at the con, then I get angry. If he takes something as cool as getting into Gencon when I got screwed out of my chance, then I'm gonna say something.
It's like if I have been saving up all of my money to take my family out to a very nice dinner. I can't, cause I don't make enough, but someone else does. I envy them so much, but when they come out, they complain at every little thing that went wrong, not caring that they got something I was dreaming of having.
That's my problem. He was what I wanted, and he complained about it! He complained that he could have had an awesome time, but didn't. Why, we still don't know.

When I was talking to the
boss, and I think I repeated it to a SR fan, I had a plan for hijacking the Sunday delivery. I pointed out that I would have a big shelf of LE books that would make people cry in envy at the horde. Unknown to them, the horde would be next to worthless on the market as they are all numbered and surely they could figure out which numbers got stolen, and track it back to me.

And I do not intend to horde. The LE will get put with my other valued SR rarities, the regular edition will and has been getting a thorough work out, and the other LE will be
given away. I would have liked to had more LE to
give away as I know they would make a great gift.

I got dumpped on and basically blasted out of getting to the con this year because some cheap-ass SOB didn't want to take a hand-out of money from my mom to get free admission to the con, free room and board, and free food. The only way we could go was if he went and lessened the money of the trip for us. My mom said she'd loan him some money to go, just for us to have him go. |
coupled with your comment about killing your mom to come gave me the impression she held the purse strings and you were a kid on an allowance. Guess you're a whiner, too. I wonder if you live in Indy, too, since you forbid my returning? Sorry, but I think I'm gonna ask hahnsoo about getting a game together. Hope he gives me a chance.

It sounds like tisoz had a great Con experience, even if it was born from a sticky situation. I would never have thought to volunteer, mostly because my bass ackwards haphazard schedule would never allow it... it seemed that most of my "free time" was in 1-2 hour bursts, because of the crazy way my games lined up, and he got reimbursed for his time (whereas, I am several hundred dollars in the hole for the experience, and I even live in Indy). And you got free food!? Amazing.

Wheen I realized I would be able to attend (as in not on the other side of the country) I saw a solicitation for volunteers at Kenzerco (KoDT parent) and replied. If I had known moreabout their products than just the comic, I could have helped out there and I think they pay for all kinds of stuff.
I also checked the GC website way back in January, and thought about volunteering at that time, then realized if the point was to save money it was a joke because I make as much in a day as I could possible get reimbursed for the entire con.
And I have a history of volunteering. I grew up in Brown County, IN and the volunteer fire dept. puts on an annual fish fry for about 5 weekends every fall. I have ties with the dept., so drive over there a few weekends to help out. It gives me a chance to see people I haven't seen in decades and I have a blast. Like they can fire me!
The fire dept. had a meeting that was ending when I stopped by for while in town for my 25 year reunion, and they wanted to write me in for a few weekends I volunteer so much. Told them I didn't know when work would find me near, but I would try to make it as often as possible.

Well...I guess I'm deep enough that I can't back out anymore, so...
First off, my mother was willing to pay for an extra person to decrease the money we had to pay. Grabbing at her cash was never an option for me. She was nice enough to loan the guy money. Giving me the money wouldn't have mattered. I still wouldn't have enough money for the plane down, the room, the con enterance fee, the events, the books, and food. It's upwards of at least a thousand just for me to get there.
Second, I'm old enough that I don't have to whine to mommy to pay for everything I want. I have a job, work 30 hours a week when not in school, and think I do well for myself.
And lastly, I was making a figure of speech. I'm sorry that you just couldn't see that and took what I was saying literally. I guess things have to be spelled out clearly for you.

Yes, bad tisoz for wanting what I can't have! Bad bad!
Tisoz happened to want a particular item. That he had the time, resources and gumption to go and get it at the expense of things you might have enjoyed is of no consequence to you, except to reiterate that you lack the time, resources or gumption. Given that you have made this clearly obvious to everyone involved, and that apparently it's not the time you're lacking, it would be much easier if you simply said 'I dislike you tisoz because I lack the resources and gumption that you have'.
It's not like his purchasing a ticket prevented you from doing it. Your depending on stupid people prevented you from doing it. Your not saving up earlier prevented you from doing it. Don't get down on him because he wasn't similarly restrained.

Oh, and I'm so happy that GenCon moved to Indy a couple years back. I was always jealous of my friends who weren't in school with disposable income and had road trips planned to the Great American North for the convention. Right now, the Indianapolis Convention Center is a brisk walk from my apartment. I definitely feel lucky.

Seriously, I would love to find a game. I promise to bring snacks and share, buy the GM pizza and/or beer. (I find it easier to put stuff over on a less than sober GM and you don't see revolutions of fat men, so keeping them well fed seems to keep my character alive and the karma flowing.

First. I said keep it civil. That means no personal attacks against other users. I invite everyone to review our terms and guidelines. You'll find the links in the top right hand corner of your screen.
Now, in reply to the posts here, I have to say this. We all get that you are pissed that you couldn't be at the con, and we all get that you wanted to go there for the purest of pure reasons. It's the mecca of gaming. We get it. I've been trying to get there for more than 10 years and every freaking year something comes up that keeps me from going.
All of that said. Nobody has any right to judge another person for their motivation behind a visit to a convention. If someone wants to go purely to hit on, and be rejected by, booth-babes... good for them! If someone wants to go purely to take part in RPGA sponsored tournaments/events then good for them too! And if someone wants to go just to get a book, well good for them as well! I haven't seen many people saying they went just for one reason. I have seen folks say they went for a primary reason, but just because I went for a book doesn't mean I'm not going to have a blast doing all of the other great activities at the con too.

I think the only real reason they did an LE at all this time is just because there's such a fondness for the SR3 one. And it's limited to 1000 because, ummm... <shrug> Probably because the SR3 one was as well. Plus that's enough copies that it's possible to get one if you really try or just get lucky, but still limited enough to be a collectors item. I doubt you'll see any sort of reprint. Printing larger runs or reprinting it sorta negates the entire point of an LE.
Plus, this time around, the LE really isn;t that big a deal, to be honest. With previuos editions, the LE versionw as hardcover, while the regular was not. That was one of the biggest draws of the LE. With the regular SR4 being hardcover, it's a little less "Special".

Well, all I really know is that I was at the exhibit hall by 8am every day and while I was disappointed they didn't have it when they say they did, I do understand that issues can come up. It isn't like they really gain anything in the realm of money or satisfaction by not selling books. It would appear to me that they lost a ton of money from not selling the books and that they also appeared to be a lot upset that they were not able to get books for everyone.
With all the waiting and standing in line, I got one copy of each and I also got to play in a ton of SR: Missions game and also the SR tournament as part of Team Gamma. I went for the games and got the book as a side quest. GenCon 2005 was the first year I went due to having spent the previous 7 years in the military. Anyhow, with the book in hand at this time, I am starting to appreciate some of the new rules even though I didn't like them at first.
Oh, and it isn't like they won't print more of the hardback ones anyhow. If people really want a limited edition, I'm sure that they will be sold on ebay by the people who got in the limited edition line for the sole purpose of getting the book to resell.
Summary: Booth people looked like they were not happy at the lack of books, and while they weren't exactly the most cheerful of folks at some times, they still tried. Thanks to them.
