Heya, folks... at long last, this is the collected character thread that I've been promising across my multiple build help/critique threads. My aim here is to present all of the characters that I've created with your help thus far, a little bit of story for each (likely a paragraph or two), and some brief background for how they came together as a team. I leave their interpersonal dynamics, foibles, and so on to each individual who wants to use them for their game. This group should be usable as a whole for GMs who want an NPC 'runner team, or piecemeal by either players or GMs who want slightly more powerful versions of the archetypes presented in the BBB - all are created using the 400 BP starting character rules, and all are (or should be, if my math isn't horribly wrong) legally playable as such.
A couple of technical notes - almost all of these characters can have their metatypes shifted by shuffling attribute points around to make room for the changes, and all save the troll were created as humans and modified at my whim for this thread. Throughout this write-up, I'll be defaulting to use of the male pronoun in describing characters, though a couple of them were originally envisioned as female. This is simply for consistency and to make things a little easier on me and can, clearly, be changed at whim to suit your needs. I'm also no great writer of fictional prose, so don't make fun of the bits that will be in this post too much

<fiction>
Best to start at the beginning, I suppose, and, like any good story, it starts with a troll, a business, and a mystery. Ursus, the name that he gave most often on the streets, and the name that he most often thought of as belonging to himself, though it had never been associated with a SIN, had been a simple businessman until two weeks ago. He had been the co-owner of a private investigation and bounty hunting firm, as well as being its muscle and gun arm. Despite not being the biggest troll in the 'plex, he was tenacious and mean-spirited in a way that often made quarry quail from a fight, but he could certainly handle himself if it came to blows. He had been moderately happy with his life - he had a legal business that provided steady work, a business partner who wasn't the worst guy to be around and had a real talent for making the Matrix do what he wanted that Ursus could just never quite grasp, and he got to exercise his muscles and his gun arm on a fairly regular basis. But that was then. Before his business partner had disappeared. Ursus didn't know what he had been looking into, only that it had been something with high-level matrix security and that it stood to make them a lot of money - enough to move up from the small fish that they usually worked for and start presenting them to a considerably... more affluent clientele. But that one day two weeks ago... he had returned to the office after going to the Stuffer Shack to pick up dinner and a refill for the soycaf machine, and found his partner gone, his office ransacked, and had heard the Lone Star sirens closing in. Being a suspicious troll by nature, Ursus decided to duck around the block before the Star got to him and see what happened. He wasn't disappointed by the show, either - this wasn't just a single squad car, but a whole flock of them, followed by a SpecOps van... and did they hit his front door with a vengeance that made him glad he wasn't on the other side of it, omae.
Since that day, Ursus had been trying to figure out what his partner was working on in hopes of tracking either him or his abductors down in order to get some answers, some bloody vengeance, or both. It's been tough going, though, as every single contact or business associate that he has ever associated with has either turned up missing or with some extra body mass in the form of copper-jacketed lead intrusions. He was able to find out, through public records, that his SIN had been tagged with a warrant, his licenses had been revoked, and that he was now wanted for questioning in relation to the break-in and robbery at his own business, as well as his partner's disappearance. Though it got his blood boiling, Ursus wasn't going to let himself be put down by the Star (or whoever was pulling their strings today) for something that he hadn't done... and he was going to get his share of the action when he found out who had
really done it. Being on the wrong side of the law, Ursus figured that it was time to be a bad guy and, to that end, started checking the Star's public warrants and feel around on the streets to see if there was anyone desperate enough to sign on to help him in the job...
</fiction>
Since all of the events detailed above, Ursus has managed to assemble a small 'runner team in order to help him in his goals. They don't know why they've been brought together, only that this troll has leverage over them, has something that he wants, and isn't the sort of person that they want to challenge. The names given below are the names that these shadow-dwellers have given themselves, the handles that they go by. Whether or not they'd offer their real names... well, that depends on who's asking, doesn't it? Without further ado, I give you the personalities of Nightsiders, Inc.:

Apogee is a hacker who can't help but draw attention to himself. He has an... attention-getting appearance, both in the meat world and in VR. His cyberskull is designed to look like the riveted, welded plates of a starship from a sci-fi trid, complete with a grating in the back that emits cool, blue light similar to the engines of those same starships. His eyes glow with the same blue light, and faint traces of it can be seen coming from his mouth (from a simple glow rod held at the roof of the mouth when he's going 'out') when he deigns to talk to someone in the meat world. Ursus found him as a result of his significant payments to the Star - the only thing that's keeping him out of a cell, since he's wanted in connection with several incidents of matrix vandalism and theft that bear his unique signature - a stylized version of his own cyberskull, laughing at his victims. He's making continuous payments to the Star detectives who know about his involvement in order for them to look the other way and not mention it to the people he hit. Ursus, however, is also using this to his advantage - after bending a few fingers and twisting a few arms, it wasn't that hard to find out who was behind the hits, and Apogee is certainly willing to play along with the troll's schemes in order to prevent him from mentioning it to any interested parties. Not that he doesn't see some chance for profit and an... interesting... time in the deal, though. Apogee is most at home in VR and spends all of his time there by purchasing the Full Immersion lifestyle a month at a time when he can afford it - which hasn't been often lately. Apogee's matrix avatar appears as a humanoid starfield with a skull-shaped chrome spaceship, venting blue exhaust, flying atop it where a standard humanoid's head would be.

Selvan is, now, a Wiccan witch. He was not born under that name, and won't divulge his birth name without being placed under extreme duress, but it is the name that he feels most suits him today. Selvan was born in a small town in the CAS, where fire-and-brimstone Christianity was king. He grew up on the outskirts of the religious center of life in his town, never quite understanding why he felt different... until he awakened on his fourteenth birthday and began to see the world in ways that no one else around him quite understood. He was persecuted and often beaten up by his former friends for his altered worldview, and eventually fled the town after having learned a few magical tricks that helped him get away from his attackers and occasionally deal as good as he got. After arriving in the 'plex, he was approached by a group of people who offered to show him the ropes - both of the city, and of his awakened worldview. He got lucky, and hadn't fallen in with bugs, toxics, or a corp recruiter (just as bad!), but had been found by a relatively benevolent group of Wiccans who actually had the awakened community's best interests at heart. They've done their best to help Selvan hide from his past, but that doesn't change the fact that the "good ol' boys" from back home want nothing more than to see him returned home to their tender mercies, and have offered cold, hard, certified credsticks to anyone who can bring him home - it seems that being the one that got away has only made them remember him all the more fondly. Ursus, on the lookout for the unusual, found his way to these publicly posted bounties and tracked down Selvan with a choice - work with him and enjoy what protection he could offer, or refuse and contribute to the cause by indirectly providing funding...

Casull is an elf, born of human parents and swept up in his teenage years by the romantic image that Tir Tairngire presented to the new race - a land to call their own. Unfortunately, the shine eventually wears thin and we all long for what's familiar. During his adolescence in Tir Tairngire, Casull discovered a remarkable facility for handguns, and practiced extensively with them throughout his time in the elven nation. Eventually, however, he was called home - a trader from the 'plex brought a hand-written message from Casull's father explaining that his mother was dying and that she longed to see her son before she passed. Having parted with his parents on equitable terms, and still caring for them, he left Tir Tairngire fully expecting to return after he had had a chance to mourn, but one thing led to another once he reached the 'plex. Seeing the chaos and disarray that the poorer parts of the city were in was a stark contrast to the relative peace of daily life in Tir Tairngire, and Casull developed a desire to bring some of the peace and order of his homeland to the 'plex. In order to contribute in a way that was suited to his abilities, he eventually decided to sign on with Lone Star - the shining representative of law and order in this shattered place. During his initial few weeks as a cadet, he became hopelessly infatuated with one of his teachers - a full-fledged Lone Star officer who seemed to share both his drive to bring the lights of justice and order to the people, and his feelings for her. In the second month of his training, after their relationship had become more than speculation, she disappeared. There was an initial investigation, but that was quickly closed after several rather large payments had been made into the chief's bank account. Disillusioned with Lone Star, and determined to find out what really happened to his lover, Casull left the force prior to completing his training and began a search of his own. Eventually, he found several trails that led to the local Triad's doorstep and, after some additional training and the sacrifice of some of his magical abilities for more pragmatic bioware, Casull challenged several of the local underbosses, killing each one when they were unable or unwilling to provide him with the information that he was looking for. He has earned himself an enemy and a bounty that demands him dead for his trouble, but is not through with his search. He was an easy find for Ursus, as they share similar drives and Casull takes no great pains to hide his ambitions or his status as a wanted man. Ursus was able to appeal to his drive for answers and for vengeance in order to recruit him to the team - promising that they would help each other solve their great mysteries or die in the attempt.

Torque has always loved vehicles and tinkering with things. He grew up in a poor part of the sprawl, and the only available entertainment was a nearby junkyard. While the other kids were playing hide and seek or cops and robbers among the hulking wrecks, Torque was always tinkering. Sometimes he got something to work... more often, he just got a new batch of burns, cuts, and a little electrocution for his trouble. This was never a dissuasion to him, however, and he was eventually able to earn a partial scholarship to a technical school. While there, he began to work with drones and immediately fell in love - he absolutely couldn't get over the sensation of being a part of one of the machines that he loved so much. His love of drones didn't take long to evolve into a desire to test his and his drones' capabilities, and he soon discovered the drone fighting circuit. Always wanting to push himself and his machines harder, Torque eventually gave into the temptation to participate in hot-sim combat matches... and was summarily dismissed from his school for it. This didn't bother him much, however, as he was immersed in the highs and lows of drone combat, and was always tinkering with his machines in order to squeeze that little bit of extra performance out of them. Eventually, he even gained enough confidence to start betting on his own matches through bookies... though this didn't pan out well, as all it took was one crushing defeat in order to leave him dispirited and in a horrifying amount of debt. This is where Ursus has stepped in with an offer to help keep the debt collectors at bay long enough for Torque to make a comeback, catch that next big score, and get himself back in the spotlight.

Ghost is a mystery, in more ways than one. He's the only one of Ursus' contacts to make it through the seeming purge intact, and that's only because he's incredibly difficult to find in the first place. No one knows much about his origins - all he'll say is that he once worked for a corporation doing... odd jobs. He won't say which corporation. As far as anyone knows, Ghost is the only name he goes by other than disposable aliases. Whether this is the only name he's ever known or whether he simply discarded his real name as easily as another alias is a matter of some debate amongst those who know him. He has some debt to the people who helped to rescue him from his previous employers - genewiping is expensive, after all - though he won't accept any help in paying off his debt. He's quiet, competent, and most people never see him coming or notice he's been there once he's gone.

Takeshi was born of an American family, and grew up comfortably. His father was a salaryman in one of the Japanacorps, and Takeshi was raised steeped in the culture of honor and sacrifice that the corporation fostered in its wage-slaves. As part of the teaching that the corp provided to all of it's employee's children, Takeshi was provided with a sensei to teach him the martial arts and philosophy of the corporation's parent company. These were the teachings that most influenced Takeshi's life, and it was his teacher who first called him Takeshi, due to the... vigorous... approach that he took to his lessons in swordplay and unarmed combat. Takeshi's father was, however, the target of an ill-fated extraction mission by a team of shadowrunners - his corporation had anticipated his defection and subsequent extraction, and had planted an area cranial bomb during an operation that was disguised as routine maintenance on his cyberware. The bomb triggered mere meters after leaving corporate property, killing Takeshi's father and mother along with several members of the 'runner team that was sent to extract them. Takeshi, however, got off relatively lightly - he escaped with his life, but had lost the use of his left eye and arm. The 'runners brought Takeshi to their Mr. Johnson, who declined to have anything to do with the debacle and disavowed any knowledge of or contract with the 'runner team. Left with a severely injured child, the 'runner team simply dropped him on the doorstep of the nearest public building that they could find. Luckily for Takeshi, it was a dojo, and he was able to convince the resident sensei to take him in and pay for rudimentary cybersurgery in order to make him a functional member of the extended family that ran the dojo. Takeshi spent several years at the dojo, largely helping with chores in order to pay off his debt, but also engaging in sword- and wordplay with the sensei whenever he had the time to do so. It was during this time that he discovered both his compatibility with cyberware and his strong affinity for the feeling of power it gave him to have limbs that weren't limited by the same laws as his flesh and blood body. Despite the reservations of his new family, Takeshi began taking odd jobs outside of the dojo in order to be able to afford more extensive and better quality cybernetic enhancements to his body. Eventually, he became involved in Yakuza protection rackets and lost his second family when they discovered what he was doing for his money and turned him out onto the street. This was no deterrent, however, and Takeshi proceeded to take loan after loan from his new bosses in order to be able to afford the cyberware that he needed. Recently, he has begun to realize how deeply the Yakuza have their claws in him and has begun to search for a more honorable way to pay off the debt that he owes them in order to free himself both from their influence and from the unsavory tasks that they demand of him. He is the one who discovered Ursus' plight through his own connections, and he has approached Ursus with an offer of his martial expertise, recognizing Ursus' cause as just, if possibly bloody.
