The adept power Elemental Strike, allows an adept to add an elemental effect to their unarmed attacks.
QUOTE (SR4A @ p. 163)
The initial DV of an acid attack counts as the Acid damage rating. Acid that has been splashed onto an object will continue to eat through for a number of turns equal to its rating. This continued corrosion stops when the acid is washed off or a base is applied. Note that Acid damage Combat spells only inflict damage once—after that the instant spell effect ends.

With an Elemental Strike, would you treat the acid as continuing to eat away at the target, or just the instantaneous effect and no lingering effect?

That's a very good question, I would imagine that it would, seeing as using fire could set the target on fire, Blast will knock them down more easily, sonic can deafen them. Of course, some, like metal, don't translate as well. Acid seems to fall into the category that just doesn't translate right.

I'd say that the acid should continue to eat away at them - a way of depicting this is that the adept's hand is covered in some sore of viscous fluid - and when the blow lands, the fluid splashes off or simply slews off onto the target.

Umm, no. No spell or magical effect that is temporary produces a permanent substance. Fire spells might produce a real fire by increasing an objects temperature to the point where it actualy starts to combust, but when the spell ends, so does the magical fire. It's exactly the same as acid, when the spell ends (or in this case, the adepts fists leave the targets face) any magically created acid dissapears.

I agree with Patrick on this one. Magical Fire can produce lingering damage by igniting the target who then burns on its own (but it's not automatic), while magical acid damage is clearly stated as being instant

This is further supported by the Acid damage spells in the core rulebook, although Patrick here did a better job explaining why.

Activating Elemental Strike is a Simple Action, after which the effect lasts for (Magic attribute) Combat Turns.

Seems like that's the duration of the Acid's existence. Not permanent - not instant, but (Magic) turns from activation. For that time, the character's hands would be dripping with acidy goodness - magically created, yes, but there's no reason to believe that it wouldn't behave like regular acid.

That is how long it stays on your hands (and feet?) If it leaves your aura you can't sustain it. Which means: Your touch burns, but when your strike ended, so does the effect.

No. The acid only burns once. just like a combat spell. No powergaming for you *g*
