I'm still doing some reading of you guyses(okay, it works in spoken English, not so much in typed) and I'd be interested in joining up if you still have room.
I've played SR3, and read but never played SR4. I have built characters just for shits and giggles.
Is there anyone in particular I need to talk too? Besides Penta

Hey BetaFlame! We'd love to have you aboard. Standing rule is that we'll bring you aboard when we return to shore. Besides that, check your char-sheet with Penta by posting it up here.
Look forward to sailing with you!

I tried PMing him to talk about character generation and so fort a couple of days ago, but no reply. According to his profile ( and I have no idea how accurate these things are) he hasn't been heard from since Oct 27thish. Has anyone talked to him, or did I miss a post saying he would be away.
Also: Is there a particular role I should look at filling out? I have a few character concepts, and I know at least 1 of them (technomancer) won't work in this setting.

He's been around. I have an e-mail address, so I'll send him a reminder.
In regards to chargen, the range is 400bp to 420bp. More details are on this link

Hi everybody!
A status report on your GM!
Yeah, I like everybody else was made busy by the holidays, school, etc. My apologies for not saying a word - when people didn't post for weeks on end to the IC thread, I figured everybody had lost interest. As this campaign is the main reason for my frequenting Dumpshock these days, I checked frequently as a guest - then less and less as I realized nobody was posting.
On top of that!
My laptop's keyboard decided to have keys fall off and be impossible (I tried) to put back on.
It ran for 2 years, so.
My problem is that the laptop costs more to fix than it would be worth - and guess where *all* of my notes and stuff for this campaign were, as well as all of my SR books (I don't typically read RPG books in paper form anymore)?
If you said "The laptop that decided to keel over", you'd be right! The data's recoverable, but I'm dependent on others to help me do that, with the keyboard on that laptop being busted. That could take months.
So I am pressing on regardless.
---
Old players:
If you're still interested in playing: Speak up. I'll give it two weeks from today. We had 8 people before...I'm looking for at least 6 to poke their heads up here and say they still want to play.
(If anybody is wondering how I'm going to run a combat with no access to SR4A or other books? Hey, so am I! I honestly have no idea - and this isn't my laptop I'm posting from (tis my dad's, a spare with far less capability - and a lot less hard drive space!), so I don't think I can even store everything on it, anyway.)
--
New players:
Read the IC thread carefully. Then get back to me if you still want in! If you PM'd - my apologies, but so many of the PMs were from a while ago, I'm presuming you all lost interest.
The UCAS Navy (Your employer, though you only learn that during post-recruitment training) is likely to learn lessons from the training cruise and the group initially recruited in both who it recruits and how it trains them (off-camera) during the time from recruitment to when you join up with the ship.
Your character absolutely does not need to be ex-mil, to answer one question I saw.
What they need to be is someone the employer would actually recruit.

Funny. My laptop's keyboard has stopped working recently as well. Wish it had happened before classes start because now I don't want to send it off to get fixed because I use it for all my notes.

Any particular additions to character creation? or is it standard 400BP from Sr4A?
Edit: Also is there any specific skillset that is lacking? Any role that needs to be filled?
Penta
Jan 21 2010, 02:50 PM
400-420BP...There were some requirements I laid out in the chargen thread (a while ago), among them the requirement for Swimming 1 or better.
Really, when it comes to chargen? Do it up to the point at which you'd be recruited by the Navy Johnson. After recruitment, you get trained prior to joining the ship, filling in the gaps.
ntwi
Jan 21 2010, 04:30 PM
I'd like to toss my hat into the ring as well. I have a background mostly fleshed out for a Hvy Wep Sam, with an odd twist that I enjoy. It should mesh well with recruitment and chargen requirements.
Penta
Jan 21 2010, 05:03 PM
Okay...
Some further stuff re chargen:
The group MUST have a common language - thusfar, that appears to be English. It doesn't matter if you speak only Broken English, but you need to speak the Common Language without a chip.
Most of the chargen stuff is contained in the chargen thread - Please, I know it takes forever, but read the whole threads. I value consistency, and with all my notes gone (or at least inaccessible), the threads are all there is of the decisions made.
Also - For sanity reasons, I'm taking no more than 10 people at a time. New people, if none of the oldsters drops out (or, put another way, doesn't poke their heads up within a week), that leaves 8 "slots" filled. I can expand this to 12 people, but only with reluctance, and no more than that.
When you've got concepts: PM me. I'll dispense my email address and AIM info if we can agree on a basic concept that then gets turned into a background and sheet. Or I might PM back, with thoughts.
As the "older" players can attest: I can be picky! I can be demanding! (You should have seen chargen's initial incarnations.) Both of these are true. I don't have the greatest grasp on the rules and crunch, so I make up for it by trying to put out a good story. To do that, I need detailed characters. I try to make my NPCs, even momentary ones, just as detailed...
With that said.
OLDER PLAYERS: AKA the Original 8. I know we've all forgotten about this campaign for what seems like forever! Well, I'm back. Hope you are too. PM me on your status within the next week, please. Or Email. Or IM if you got it. Point is, speak up. I'll presume that anyone who hasn't spoken up has lost interest. Karoline, Budoka, I see you two are around. Everybody else, speak up.

Background
[ Spoiler ]
Aiden MacPhee grew up in rural Scotland. His family was poor, his father a dock worker and his mother a housewife. Born an elf, his family took this to be a good sign. His father was a standard Scotsman build, tall, redheaded, and large. His mother was an oddity. Small of stature, very slight with dark skin, hair and eyes. She claimed to be of Pictish descent, so much so she bullied her husband into allowing her to change their sons last name to MacPhee. (The named is a form of MacDhubhshith which means "son of the Black Fairy"). He had a fairly normal childhood, aside from his pointed ears, dark skin and bright blue eyes. His mother taught him Gaelic as he grew up, and the language came more naturally to him than any other.
He Awakened at the age of 15, during his first day of high school. Being small and different got him picked on to a ridiculous degree, which resulted in a manifestion of a Spirit of Earth standing guard over him to ward of a pack of bullies. This did not set him in high regard with the local authorities, and the rest of his high school career was hell. Given his rediculous high marks, Awakening, and poor upbringing, he was given a scholarship to Georgetown University in Washington DC in a classic PR move (Look! We helped the poor boy! LOVE US). He accepted, of course, and got the hell out of the United Kingdom, with only minor guilt at leaving his parents behind. He graduated at the age of 22 in 2067, in the top 3% of his class, majoring in Magical Theory with a minor focus in History.
During his time at Georgetown, he was required to take a Physical Education course as part of his graduation requirements. Being the overly adventurous type, Aiden opted into the SCUBA diving classes. He rapidly discovered he liked this, he began to spend more and more time at diving in his spare time. He even shelled out enough money to goto the Carribean at one time to take a Liquid Apparatus Breathing diving course during one of his summer breaks, taught by an old retired SEAL. The SEAL named Omar Jackson took a liking to the spunky boy, and decided to teach him to back up some of attitude with a little heat, and taught
Aiden the basics of firearms. He opted to keep it to pistols, since a rifle would probably break the tiny guy in half. Omar tried teaching him how to handle a knife in proper SEAL tradition, but Aiden's slight stature made him poorly suited to the task, and Omar bought him a stun baton and gave him a basic run down in the use of the weapon, which he did under severe protest ("Weapons are ment to HURT PEOPLE, not tickle!")Before he left, Omar gave him the number of a fellow in Atlanta and told him he might find better use for his magical skills, and the new found skills and learned during his summer stay, in a field other than sitting around helping grumpy old mages in their studies. Aiden saw this as an oppurtunity to see more of the world, and called the fellow, who turned out to be a Fixer in the DC area, by the name of Mark Ryan Wright (Mr Right).
Mr Right set him up with a few easy jobs, just to feel the kid out. He did come with a good recommendation, after all. He did very well with the test runs, so Mr Right desided he'd find him a REAL job that might actually pay his rent. To this end, he connected one Kevin Roberts, suggesting he had a candiate for his 'special' program, and set up a met for Drest to catch up with Kevin in Miami, so they could met and determine the his suitibility for the project.
Physical Desc: Drest is about 5'3" tall, and weighs a mere 123 pounds. His skin is fairly tanned, even in the winter. He has dark brown hair, and bright blue eyes that look slightly out of place in his coloration. His hair is long, and usually down to his midback tied back in a loose ponytail. His three are located one on each arm, and one on his chest. They are usually in the form of a raven before a moon phase, left to right New Moon, Quarter Moon, and Full Moon.

Only thing I see after a quick read-through is that he has a license to carry monowhips. First off he doesn't actually have a monowhip (making it rather pointless) and second I'd imagine that F grade items don't exactly have licenses for them without some exceedingly compelling reason and even with something like that the person is going to get double and triple checked.
Otherwise looks like a solid character.

Filipino deck hand, picked up Muay Thai and a hatred of the Japanese in Thailand. Picked up piratical skills fighting the Japanese at sea. Retired, from violent life, went to sea as a deck officer. Punched out a Japanese superior, out of a job looking for work with an interesting skillset.
I'll post once more Penta has a look at it - its still a work in progress. And have to love Karmagen for the building the balanced skill focused character. Ach weel - BP has its upsides too.

Good to have you back, Ears.
That makes 4. If the other 4 show up, my brain will be much happier because I won't have to figure out what the hell happened to the characters.
Budoka almost wins Karma for helping even me stay on course. Almost because I'm trying to keep karma inflation from getting out of hand.
Newbies: Yes, you need to do backgrounds. I suggest using the 20 questions to help.
Annoyingly, I checked my old laptop. I can't recover *any* of my old notes for this campaign. Including my roster of who was playing whom and doing what, my selection of mooks for you to face, or my ship stats. Fortunately, my collection of books on PDF are safe, though I have no idea how the hell I'm to get multiple gigabytes of data off when I only have a 256 MB flash drive.
It's not *quite* like a dog ate the GM's notebook in a tabletop campaign, but very close.

Okay. 1445 EST update:
I've sent PMs to the missing 4 (MusicMan, Whizbang, Marwynn, CollateralDynamo) asking if they're still interested and to check in here if they are.
Hopefully this will rouse them.
What this means:
If they're all interested, that leaves 2 open slots for people to join immediately, at least according to my original plans.
BetaFlame, being done, takes one slot. I'm making an executive decision to save myself the pain of trying to figure out how he would have joined with no mention of the fact before, and going to decide that he (and anybody else) joins up after this trial run.
After that, how I'll deal with the rest:
I've got two options.
One, I stretch things (I don't think it was ever stated how many passengers and crew the Fedallah could hold, but I will award karma if I can be proven wrong and that we did decide that) and accept up to 4 more players. A group of 12 will be like herding cats, though, and basically require a lot of coordination and work on my part and on the part of everybody playing. In short, I'd need help keeping everything straight. 12 will, that said, have to be a hard limit - not 13, not 14, 12 players at any one time, with any beyond that being reserves. It'll take a good bit of work dividing the money amongst yourselves, though - the formula that was worked out assumed a max of 10 people.
Two, more conventionally, we have reserves. Players who basically stand by and stand ready to join the campaign as people drop out. This would be for anybody past the 10th person.
(There's a third option, starting another Blood in the Water campaign, that I'm explicitly not entertaining - One campaign by forum is hard. Two would drive me insane.)
I'll let you guys all decide amongst yourselves what sounds best: 10 people or 12, basically. If we go to 12 players, 1 person will have to step up and basically be an assistant GM - especially during combat or similarly crunchy scenes.
With all that said, that last slot (the 10th) that exists regardless will be filled basically by first-come, first-served. If you finish up first, you get the slot; it's the only way to be fair. You will, like BetaFlame, join the crew at their next port.
What I'm going to encourage for BetaFlame and the other newbies: Work with those already aboard. Do it here, do it via PM, or whatever (I really wish Dumpshock had the functionality to CC people on PMs). Figure out what's needed. I will be so much happier if you do - there's nothing worse for me (because I feel like I did false advertising by accepting someone the crew couldn't use, or who wound up as a fifth wheel) than taking someone on and figuring out they can't find a niche.
---
Other than that, some other housekeeping:
1. I'm watching the IC thread. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, though, so I'm naming Budoka as the person who'll poke me when you're all done with final planning and ready to move in - I won't post til that point arrives. In a tabletop game, it'd be easy to tell when you've overplanned and move on - on a forum, I'm not so ready to step in and cut you off, so I'll trust the players to figure out when that point has arrived.
2. If you've lost my email/Google chat info, it's readily available if you PM me. I have nobody that I recall on gchat from this campaign still.
3. Karma - I asked you guys back when the campaign started to keep your own records of karma earned. I didn't *expect* my laptop to fall apart, but it did - hence I'm going to ask for those records, if any, by email. I recall vaguely giving out karma for being helpful or insightful, but not sure how much or to who. If it's not written down, it never happened.

I'm still here... I've posted a couple of times in the IC thread recently.

Is this an established group or are you guys accepting more (at the end of the current run, of course)? If you're accepting more, I have a few character concepts based on what may be needed for the team.

MusicMan: Okay, yeah, I've been skimming the thread again and realized I missed you. Ooops. My apologies.
Sleep: It's established, but we're still taking more people to join when the ship gets into port again after this trial mission. If everybody old makes contact again, we'll have 8, out of 10 as a soft maximum. (I could see the group consisting of as many as 12, but I'll leave that to the players to decide.) We're continually accepting people as reserves, though, beyond the 10th character.

Do I just post character sheet here for approval, or send it to you in private?

If you'd like to get some less-lethal ammo, we should be able to recon you purchasing some gel-rounds or SnS during shore leave.

OK, this question goes to the players. What in your estimation do you guys most need a character to fulfill the role of? Sounds like you're mostly on a boat so Transportation is a no go, but I'll list the roles from the Runner's Companion. I have about 4 or 5 basic characters that I could use so it's mostly up to you guys what you need.
Close Quarters Combat
Fire Support
Infiltration
Investigation
Magical Support
Matrix Support
Negotiation (aka a Face)
Demolitions
