Ok folks, I'm tossing my hat into the ring. It's one of those propeller hats too. I'm going to try my hand (again, as some of you may remember another attempt) at running a game. My fatal flaw in the last attempt was that I had an idea, a potentially good one, but little/no plan. I was trying to wing it. Never a good idea with an online format. So this time there is a method to my madness, and a madness to my method. Let's start with the basics...
Teaser:
Extractions are always fun, when the target is willing.
Char Gen Rules:
• Priority or Build Point (130) system only.
• Shapeshifters or ghouls must be approved by me.
• No Otaku.
• Variant Metahumans are allowed, though are subject to denial.
• SURGE is allowed, with either a roll (include results with character) or buy E/F style points balance
• Maximum rating 6.
• Maximum availability 8.
• +/-10 Points for Edges/Flaws Max.
- There can be no more than a 3 point gap between end Edge/Flaw point value.
- Matrix Addiction Flaw cannot be purchased at the -6 value.
- Aptitude will be allowed for combat applications, for special cases (ex. Character has no cyber/magic).
- Hunted, Extra Enemy, and similar flaws are to include a name of the person (or organization) who is hunting/hating the character, and a reason behind this.
I would like characters to know eachother, and have worked together in the past. This does not mean that they have all worked as a group, but they're all tied to eachother through past work.
Example: Runner A and B are a team, as are Runners C and D, E works alone. At some point, Runner E is hired to do a run alongside Runners A and B. At a later point in time Runner D is hospitalized, so Runners C and E team up for a short time.
The links can be simple, they can be complex. I encourage prospective players to work these ties out amongst themselves.
History is key. I don't expect a tome on your character, but a half page to a page may just earn you some consideration for that special something you'd like to have, but aren't sure I'll allow.
I will be accepting applications until 06-Feb-04 (next Friday) at midnight, Eastern Standard time.
Application questions, concerns, and/or miscellaneous death threats and cookie recipies can be addressed to: anomaly_of_the_void@hotmail.com

The geek code I can figure out...
DH: Since Juggernaught got sidelined I was thinking of using "Cassidy". I still have the first draft before we got the power increase (I think I liked that version better--it was simpler). Does that sound good or should not bother?
Also, Ranygun's guns and/or rules??

Bottom line of the sig it'd be... geekblock's linked in someone elses sig, too easy...
kevyn: The only issue I can see with a character made for Juggernaut, aside from the fact the game may still proceed (I'd rather see different characters played than in existing runs), would be the fact that Juggernaut was meant for very expirienced characters... the BP+Karma setup makes for a character that'd grossly overmatch the rest of the group.
As for the question regarding Raygun's rules, I prefer to stick to canon reference.
Dashifen: *drops the big rubber stamp of approval on Pili* Welcome to Checkmate.
The one thing I'd like to encourage here, for those still interested, is new characters. The rewards I give for background are enough to give a little extra to the characters, so don't fear. I'd also like to see that all important tie in with the other runners. Heck, if you want to say they bumped into eachother at a Stuffer shack the week before the run, run wild.
Also, this will hopefully be the first of a chain of runs, as the trend of late seems to be shifting towards... so have no worries about your characters ending up one shot, I'm gonna do my best to see that doesn't happen.

DH, I have a char-gen question. Do you allow mages to spend spellpoints on initiation? I'm asking because I'm leaning towards playing Stitch (sorcerer specializing in both mundane and magical healing) again, but he really needs that initiation to work (it's to bring his Magic back up after some minimal cyberware). If not, no big deal - I'll just submit my second choice, Rent (adept bodyguard and atypical troll).

Hey guys, it looks like a few of us are ready to play. Anyone want to start working on connections between us?
Maybe we should just start another thread?
Dashifen
Feb 2 2004, 05:07 PM
Nah, just use this thread. I think what we should do is all post the background stories that we've generated for our characters. Then, after we've read a few of them, we can start to piece together how they fit together. I'll start, but my background for Pili is at home. Therefore, I'll edit this post and post it in about 10 minutes.
Also, for those of us with laptops only and therefore not a very large screen, I would appreciate it if background stories were posted in spoiler tags. That way you can close the spoiler section and the thread isn't huge later on. Hopefully this isn't a major problem for others.
To use a spoiler tag (just in case) you just use the word [ spoiler ] to start the spoiler section and [ /spoiler ] to end the section. Just don't put any spaces between the brackets and the word and things should work out nicely.

Little is known about Mack. She's beautiful, intelligent, well spoken, and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. As a result, she is a brutally effective face. She knows someone in just about every corner of the shadows and her finger on the pulse of the Organized Crime society. She's also been wired up, and with the right amount of lead-time, she can do just about anything as good as a professional. As it stands, her current library is impressive so she's always able to fill in any gap necessary. Her history on the scene in Seattle is relatively nill, in fact even a complex matrix search only pulls up the occasional sealed court document alluding to her trouble making early years. Apparantly, she got really wise and keeps an almost paranoid low profile. Russian-born, she speaks with a distinctive russian accent, only when her feathers have been ruffled but otherwise speaks with the tounge of a well bred woman. She has a brutal streak as well, and if you've ever seen her perform an interrogation, you'll never look at her the same again.

Manuel Aguinaldo
Born in the Philippines in 2043.
Family:
Father, Antonio, Escrima instructor
Brother, Javier, deceased
Sister, Amelia, deceased
Mother, Gloria deceased
Born in Manila in 2043. Had a fairly normal life for his first 12 years. He attended Catholic school at Our Lady of Eternal Sorrow. He studied Escrima in his father’s school, then in the back yard when the school was shut down. He knew his country was being ruled by the Japanese, and learned the normal dislike for them, but rarely gave a thought to politics.
On June 7, 2055 everything changed. Manny came home to find his brother, sister and mother slaughtered on their living room floor.
Apparently, Amelia had been the unwilling “girlfriend” of a Yakuza soldier named Hanzo. Javier found out about this situation, and went looking for Hanzo. He found him with Amelia and 3 other Yak soldiers eating dinner. He attempted to take her home, but Hanzo interfered. Javier hit him, starting a huge brawl. Javier was carrying his sticks, so it wasn’t even a fair fight. In less than 10 seconds, all 4 Yaks were out, and Hanzo was dead.
A couple hours later, a large group of Yakuza showed up at their door, killing everyone in the house. Manny went to the docks to tell his father. Antonio left him at his restaurant for a couple of hours while he took care of some business (which later turned out to be killing Hanzo’s father and 3 other Yaks, selling his restaurant and burning down his old house). 4 hours later, after an exchange of cash, Manny and Antonio were on a freighter bound for Vladivostok. They lived there for 6 months, with Antonio and Manny working in a restaurant, Manny bussing tables and Antonio cooking. They eat most of their meals there and slept there at night, saving every bit they could. From there, they rode another freighter to Seattle. Arriving on Jan 19, 2056.
Settling in Puyallup, Antonio found work in another restaurant. Manny was an illegal, another of the millions of SINless “citizens” of Seattle. He couldn’t go to school, couldn’t get a legal job, or go to a legal doctor. But, he could fight. And, in his father’s backyard classes he got better.
His skill and enjoyment of violence quickly led to joining a gang. First it was a small gang whose entire turf was 4 blocks. Then, they joined into a larger gang controlling a piece of Puyallup proper. By 16, he had come to the attention of the Triad bosses. His general disregard for other people was completely overshadowed by his hatred of all things Japanese and the Yakuza in particular.
Not being Chinese, he could never really be a member of a Tong, but he was a very useful soldier. Building a rep on sheer aggression, he became enforcer/security chief for Madam Mei’s massage parlor in Puyallup before his 19th birthday.
An unfortunate incident derailed Manny’s career in crime. On a regular night and Madam Mei’s, one of the guests attacked and savagely beat one of the girls. Manny did his job, and beat the man worse, knocking out 2 teeth, smashing his nose and rupturing his spleen. Unknown to Manny, this was Puyallup’s zoning commissioner, receiving a payoff for some beneficial zoning changes in downtown Puyallup. To fix things, the boss put a hit out on Manny. Madam Mei found out immediately and warned Manny. Manny called up some some contacts from a heroine smuggling operation he'd been involved in to hide him. He hid out in the Orc underground with Billy Mura from the Black Rain and then in the NAN for 6 months with Wishbone, a Cascade Orc shaman, until everything cooled off.
Wishbone had quit the smuggling business after seen the effects that heroine had on it's users and had started trying to make up for some of the damage he'd done. 6 months with Manny had an effect. After being forced to face the consequences of his actions, Manny knew he couldn't go back to being a thug.
Looking at his skills, he knew that he was only qualified for a few jobs. The UCAS didn’t allow illegal immigrants in the military, the Star didn’t hire known criminals and the Tongs would only ignore him as long as he stayed “disappeared”.
So, he had his friend Billy, introduce him to Lucy Chen, a small time fixer in Puyallup. Lucy started sending small jobs his way. Muscle for hire. Manny always came through. He’s got the street cred and physical skills to move up the ladder and be a real runner. He just needs a chance.
Appearance: Short (168cm or 5’6”) and very stocky (102K or 225#) Philipino man. Usually wears biker leathers and an armored jacket, with a “wife beater” underneath to show off his tattoo’s. He’s got many, and some are his own work. He’s got regular clothes for when he needs to keep a lower profile, though.
Skills: Other than Escrima, Manny learned most of his skills on the street. Shooting a pistol came natuarally, but he only took the time to get good, not great. He’s naturally athletic, and he learned stealth from years of sneaking down alleys and breaking into buildings. Since he’s turned running the shadows, all of his spare time has gone into studying electronics and high tech. He’s far from an expert now, but he will be.
Personality: Although he’s turned toward the “light side”, he still is at heart a street rat. He won’t back down from a challenge, although he’ll try to bluster his way through a fight rather than just beat some one down now. Other than that, he’s a pretty happy guy, and fun to be around. In his spare time, Manny is a decent tattooist and pool player. If he's not doing one of those he's either riding or working on his BMW Blitzen 2050. He can aften be found in the kind of bar where the girl behind the bar is standing on top of it, blowing fire from lit rum shots at 11am. He’ll be the guy by the pool table with the tattoos cheering her on.

[ Spoiler ]
Phillip Lacroix was born to human parents in the late 2030's in New Orleans. The family is ethnic creole and as a result of family tradition, Phillip -- or Pili (pee-lee) as he is called -- learned French and English growing up. He has an older half-brother named Alexander. Alexander is the son of an African man and Pili's mother. When intrested in his roots Alexander begain to research African languages. He found out that Pili is "Second Born" in Swahili and dubbed his little brother that early. The name stuck.
His early life was relatively easy. He joined a local youth organization and it is there that he began to learn about computers and first aid. The organization was similar to the late 20th's Boy Scouts. He was chummy with people at school but something of a follower. He was ready to get to know people but didn't really understand how to lead the groups of which he was a part -- including the youth organization. In it, he was a patrol leader for a while -- in charge of about seven boys. It was one of these young boys that first introduced Pili to Voodoo.
Growing up in New Orleans, you couldn't help but learn something about Voodoo. The native traditions of the Carribbean and the old French south had meshed with Christianity so long ago that few understood the origins of the practice, but none could deny that legends of the voodoo doll and zombies were rife in the region. Plus, since the awakening and the "arrival" of Loa spirits and the magical powers of the Hougan, the tradition began to be understood as a viable and real mystical system. Pili learned about Voodoo from Lawrence. Larry's family were Voodoo hougans for generations and he described each of the Loa to Pili. Coupling his social nature as wel as his ability to easily make friends, Pili felt drawn to Legba and Obatala.
It was during his teens when Pili goblinized from Human to Ork. Goblinization was becoming more infrequent but everyone recognized the signs. Pili was kicked out of the youth organization and lost most of his friends except for Larry. Larry and his family didn't really mind Pili's new appearance and felt that his value as a person was still the same as it was prior.
Things were okay for a while. His parents adjusted but his brother didn't want to associate with the Ork in their midst. School became more difficult as the others harassed him for this apperance, and Pili began to find it more difficult to communicate with others who were focused on what they thought he was instead of what he truly was. He was happy though -- or at least content -- to stay where he was.
That is until Larry's family was killed. As far as anyone knew, it was a random act of violence. Pili knew otherwise. Larry had told him that his family had a rival in the underworld politics of New Orleans post-awakening Voodoo politics. Pili assumed that the rivals had finally decided that Larry's family had become too powerful and destroyed them. Pili was inscensed. For the first time, he performed a ritual to summon a Loa spirit of Obatala -- defender of the weak. The spirit of the Loa possessed him and through his own newly awoken magical abilities and the power of the Loa incarnate, Pili was able to claim vengence on the rival family.
His vengence was not "complete" as others would have felt it, as the rivals were left alive. Obatala is not a fan of death and prefers a non-lethal solution to problems. As a result, the rivals knew of a rising power in Pili that could threaten their power base. They tracked Pili down and gave him an ultimatum: leave or your family dies. Pili left.
He wandered for a while, performing small rituals to the Loa in order to help him on his way. Using their powers when necessary and learning spells from other shamans that he met as he moved from New Orleans north into the UCAS and then eventually west to Seattle. In Seattle, he lives in a small 1 bedroom economy apartment. He has some connections to the Ork Underground, but prefers to live above ground. He often works as security for small businesses -- setting up astral wards or providing spirits to help when necessary. And, his friend Hugh is often ready to help out with a little muscle if necessary.
APPEARANCE
Pili is an Ork about 5' 11" (1.8m) tall. He's wiry and thin for an Ork at only 130lbs (58kg). His skin has an olive cast to it. The striking part about his are his amber/yellow eyes. His eyes were originally brown but seem to lighten to their current golden color when he goblinized.
As with most patrons of Obatala, he wears almost exclusively white clothing. The exception to this is his long coat, which is a more fashionable black. His normal clothing usually consists of a pair of white or kahki pants with a white shirt. His armored clothing is similarly colored -- just will a little added benefit for when the drek hits the fan.
As a result of all of this white clothing, and due to his generally ordered mind and logical way of dealing with things, he has developed a mild form of Misophobia -- a fear and dislike of dirt and germs. It's not dibilitating, but Pili is constantly focused on remaining clean and keeping his white clothing as white as possible.
SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES, AND RESOUCES
He's not good at saving money. But he's not the best at making it either. Most of what he earns goes into his rent, which he tries to stay ahead of by pre-paying in quarters or thirds of a year. His skills with a pistol were mostly honed in conjunction with some training from Hugh, who orginally gave Pili his gun. The magical training that Pili has received is mostly in the form of other shamans with who Pili has associated. Further, the learning that he acquired from Larry as a young man has proven invaluable.
He has increased his abilities with a computer, focusing on searching for information. He often sells this abilities to others if they needs someone to act as private investigator. He also recalls most of his First Aid training that he received as a boy in the youth organization.
He has always been a polite person so the ettiquette of the modern world was not hard for him to assimilate. Further, he's always been an intelligent person -- a fact that he has used to his advantage from time to time. Especially since others are usually expecting the dumb-fragging-tusker personality from Pili, he can sometimes put people off balance by understanding complex concepts faster than people would usually expect him to.
PERSONALITY
Pili does not like to kill. He sees it as the removal of the potential for his opponents to produce something valuable -- even if only by luck. Instead, he focuses on confusing his enemies or just fast talking his way through a situation. When forced to, he is not afraid to resort to his gun, but he usually relies on Gel rounds rather than lethal bullets.
He prefers to work in situations where he feels that his actions benefit the underdogs. Working for small business, schools, families, etc. make him feel as if he is helping to defend those who are less able to defend themselves.
He's quick with a joke and generally fun to be around. His interests in cooking -- especially with foreign and obscure seasonings help to pass some of his spare time. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to focus on these interests to the extent that he would like.
His goal is to eventually open a small restaurant. However, recognizing the shorter life span that he faces as a result of his race, he's beginning to feel the press of time and is sometimes willing to take more risks now than he was in order to try and make more money.
RUNNING THE SHADOWS
Pili runs the shadows because he feels that it is the best application for his skills. He can work around the system and work to help those that are hurt by it. Further, as an Ork, his life outside the shadows would always be frought with the common dumb-fragging-tusker stereotype. But, in the shadows, his skills are valued and often surpass the stereotypes.
I see a way to link Manny and Pili. I hadn't imagined Pili as having too many connections to the Ork Underground, but being an Ork, it's possible that they met there and worked together on a few small jobs while he kept a low profile. Plus, if necessary, Pili could ahve been the person who helped Manny get back into the Seatle area after hiding out in the NAN. That falls in with Pili's desire to help the underdog.

OK, I added a little to my background. One of the reasons he's well connected in the seedier parts of the Southern Seattle sprawl is his skill with a tattoo gun. Most of his contacts bear some of his work, usually given away for free, goodwill being the aim.
As Manny is no longer a "thug", he's been tattooing more and more for money, while waiting for shadow work, or the occasional chance at a lone Yak soldier. It's an easy hook for an intro

Jack Summer was born John Summer to a career Delta officer and his medical officer wife. His father was killed in a counter-terror mission by a toxic shaman while he was just a baby. His mother raised him by herself, his father's Delta teammates were all his surrogate fathers in particular Uncle Marcinko.(Free Contact: Fixer). They taught him self defense, shooting and fieldcraft. He poured his energies into martial pursuits as well as investigating magical phenomenon in an attempt to find out more about his father's death.
He joined the UCAS military as an officer and represented UCAS as a sniper in the Desert Wars even winning an MVS award. He first met Cougar(Grey's charactor) during this time.
He suffered a head wound during a joint mission with Knight Errant Firewatch, where he met Clark(Free Contact: Johnson, Ares-KE Firewatch). Because of this he was sent to Seattle to oversee the security of the more sensitive parts of the Seattle Zoo. He has a DSC, a Silver Cross and a Bronze Cross with 4 repeats as well as numerous Purple Hearts.
He has a godfather in the form of Tir Prince Larry Zincan (Friends in High Places), the Prince feels an obligation to Jack as it was the life of his wife and baby that Jack's father saved with his heroism.
Skill note: RP sense, he should have a higher skill base but can be explained that his head wound damaged some parts of his brain. Hence he was sent instead to baby sit security for the Seattle Zoological Gardens.

Here is a quick background for Cougar:
[ Spoiler ]
Cougar started out working with the Souix Wildcats. He was always jealous of how the adepts and shaman got better treatment then those who were mundane, so whenever there was a chance for him to get a cybernetic upgrade, he jumped at it. Unfortunately, this made the adepts and shamans look down on him even more. Eventually he got tired of it and left the Wildcats. He moved to the shadows of Seattle to make a living for himself where being part machine was a tool, not a weakness.

Tristan [working on a last name]
He’s around six feet tall, medium-athletic build, light brown hair, grey eyes. Appears to be in his early to mid twenties (actual birth day unknown). Prefers to dress in whatever is the most recent fashion trend. His recent relocation has given him a taste for the finer things in life and he likes it. His ultimate goal is to someday make the “Big Score” so he can actually retire to a lifestyle that he has been enjoying. As it is, he saves most of his money for living expenses and eventually using his mob connections to set an investment portfolio.
Tristan, while he may appear softened up by his living experience, still has a mean streak a klick wide and uses it liberally when on the streets. At the end of the day he is still a product of the Sprawl and that’s all he’ll be. On the other hand growing up in the environment he did has taught him some (not much, but some) restraint in his dealing w/ superiors. Tristan currently enjoys his new station too much to do anything to jeopardize it. He likes the lifestyle, he (won’t admit it but) likes the people that live near him, and enjoys the game he has been playing. If Tristan where to sit down and think about—which could very well happen some day—he’d realize he likes the people around him because they treat him like a person (much the same way his old capo did). They don’t see him as a means to an end or tool that’s useful. He also has a bit of a knack for fitting in pretty much anywhere. And if that fails, he is a terror with a pistol….
Tristan was orphaned at a young age and spent his formative years bouncing from one gang to another in Redmond. He was quick on his feet and had sharp wit about him so usually moved up fairly quickly. He awakened around puberty and that was just the little push he needed to get his "career" going. Almost overnight he found that he had become faster, more agile, and had a deadeye shot.
Somewhere in his late teens he got snapped up my one of the local Mafia recruiters. The area crew boss had managed to get a magician to sign on and in a "recruitment fair” the mage noticed Tristan's Talent.
Tristan spent the next few years honing his skills growing into manhood. He eventually got "promoted" from thug to hitman and did some work involving "hostile takeovers" of local underworld leaders. He excelled at his job and because of his expertise, the local crew boss grew in power (promotion by attrition). Due in large part to his adept abilities, Tristian soon moved up from hitman to bodyguard/driver for the capo. He liked this even better as he had the opportunity to run w/ the high rollers and everyone in the neighborhood gave him a wide birth. Whereas once he had spend his days rattling his saber and staring down punks (or just shooting them) to move them out of his way, now they practically fell over each other to clear a path..
He had become increasing closer w/ the capo and been present at semi-major mob meetings. More importantly, he had developed a personal relationship w/ the capo. Tristan started spending the holidays w/ the capo and his family. During one of these events, he met the boss’s daughter who was home visiting from college. The two secretly
started seeing each other. The boss’s wife knew what was going on and knew that Tristan worked for her husband but liked the young man so was willing to look past his “profession” (hell, look who she married). The boss on the other hand, was none too pleased. He hadn’t worked this hard and this long for his only daughter to end up w/ a mafia thug.
The boss knew he didn’t want Tristan with his daughter but it didn’t seem like a “killing” offense. The daughter liked him, the wife liked him, the two sons liked him, a number of (non blood) family members liked him (Tristan is a charming fellow) and he was handy to keep around. One day the boss offered Tristan a large sum of money if he would stop seeing his daughter. Tristan thought this was like God smiling on him b/c the romance had fizzled right about the time everybody found out. He had been racking his brain to come up w/ a way to break up w/ the girl and not end up at the bottom of the sound.
Tristan took the deal which also included a kick ass fake id and a [condo/apartment/whatever] in a gated community in Belluve. He went out and got himself all cleaned up. Now he dresses almost exclusively in high fashion, trendy clothing. He spent a fair amount of time studying societal trends to fit in better and it paid off. Tristan moved into the new place and took to it like a fish to water. All of the old money people that already lived there assumed he was just another trust fund brat and that explained his excentricities. Tristan furthered their thoughts by leading them to believe he had a degree in “Urban Sociology” which gave him the opportunity to tell stories about his gang days and mob days w/o implicating himself (“When I was working on my theses, I met this guy that….”)
Initially, Tristan planned on someday robbing his neighbors but has come to be rather fond of them--don’t try to mention that to him, though. He’ll explain it as he looks out for his “turf”. As if Knight Errant didn’t have it covered. Several in particular have grown on him. The neighbor girl just adores him. She’s attractive but horribly spoiled and clueless in Tristan’s eyes (think “The Simple Life” w/ Paris Hilton—she’s probably not quite that hot, though). He sometimes takes her out “slumming” (he chuckles b/c she calls it that) when she can ditch her security detail. In actuality, she’s sharper than she appears and is beginning to suspect that there’s more to Tristan than a rich kid w/ an attitude (She’s seen him lock horns w/ a number of posers and a few “real” thugs). Her parents know that she sneaks out every now and then and almost approve that its w/ Tristan as they enjoy Tristan’s company and think he’s a charming young man that needs to mature slightly. The father thinks Tristan reminds him of himself when he was younger and out to “sow his royal oats”. The mother thinks Tristan is just the cutest little thing.
When not running, Tristan spends his days playing golf or tennis w/ the residents of the community, shopping with the hot neighbor girl, or going to cocktail parties w/ the other spoiled kids. He often is seen working out in the gymnasium complex or at the local firing range with some of the other “arm chair commandos”. He thinks its hysterical listening to them boast.
Tristan only has two real accomplices in paradise, one is the family’s head of security, a KE wage mage. He also knows there is more to Tristan than meets the eye (aura reading does wonders…) but Tristan is also a member of the community and has yet to do anything to endanger his charges. The girl often would give her body guards the slip and go out on the town, at least now she had an escort.
The other is the head ground’s keeper [I’m thinking “Willie” from the Simpsons….just for comic relief]. Being from the streets himself, he knows trouble when he sees it. The two sometimes get drunk together and share stories about the Sprawl. Also, he can lend a hand if the shadows (or blood) spills over into Tristan’s high society life.
[there may be some more prominent characters but these are the main ones]
Tristan still maintains ties to the street as well, most noteably his former mob boss, who still will occasionally throw the odd job his way.
[There will probably be more contacts but it all depends on how much cash he has left]
Tristan also maintains a Low lifestyle in Redmond [not sure where yet] but spends little time there other than when on a run. It’s more of a safe house than anything else.

DH, I have emailed you the complete version of Stitch. Here is a summary for everyone else:
[ Spoiler ]
Stitch (Nick Stratton), Male Human Sorcerer (Sun Totem)
Description
Stitch is a male of medium height, thin, with close-cropped pale blonde hair, pale grey eyes, and bronzed skin. He has a stylized solar disk tattooed around his navel. He wears casual street clothing, preferring that and "low-maintenance" hair (although he can wear a suit convincingly when he has to), although he is meticulous about his personal hygiene. He often uses sharp, chopping gestures when he talks.
History
Nick was born in a Renraku enclave in downtown Denver (once in Colorado, now one of the treaty cities). Nick's family all worked for Renraku, and he almost considered the corporation to be a family in a larger sense - his early years were safe and insulated from much of the turmoil and poverty going on all around him. As his views started to change, he became more and more alienated from his family. He feels an ache inside when he thinks of them now (and sometimes wonders what they are doing now), but feels that with him persona non grata with Renraku, it's better to keep it as a clean break with them.
Nick got a decent formal education from Renraku, although he learned early on to take any history or politics from them with a big grain of salt. He studied medicine, and was lucky enough to get an internship in Salish territory, where they knew what was happening when his Totem started sending him visions. Nick was enraptured by it, although the experience started making him re-think even more of his Renraku-influenced opinions. Renraku, obviously, had mixed feelings about his awakening. On the one hand, this made him an even more valuable commodity to them. But on the other hand, he was not a proper hermetic magician, and his Salish teachers seemed to be undermining his company loyalty. They started keeping an eye on him.
Nick was finishing his medical education at the Denver Mid-Town Center, when he uncovered corruption involving the sale of cadavers to illegal chop shops. He notified the Renraku program director first, and got told to mind his own business. This completed his disillusionment, and he took steps to erase his identity and to disappear into the shadows. Renraku more or less let him go - they were disgusted and washed their hands of him, not believing it worth the effort to attempt to "re-educate" him.
Personality
Nick is distrustful of politics, suspecting that the megacorporations run things in all but name, and sometimes even that. He supports activism, ranging from grass-roots protests to more extreme and even violent groups - although he does not ever advocate or approve of any activities that result in innocent people losing their lives; property damage is fine, but killing is going too far. He cares about the good of the community more than he cares about the law, which is nothing but the codification of "might makes right" to give the forces of oppression a veneer of legitimacy.
Nick is not sure what, exactly, he believes. His experiences with his magic and his totem have opened his eyes up to wonders, but right now his beliefs are very personal, and he doesn't even have the words to articulate them yet. He does know that it's not likely he will ever follow any organized religion - he thinks there IS an afterlife, but doesn't derive much comfort from it. He thinks that the afterlife is such a transformation that you might as well not exist any more - the new existence will have no memories or desires from this life, any more than a butterfly looks back on when it was a caterpillar. So he doesn't care enough to argue with atheists - whether you cease to exist, or evolve into something unimaginable, it's effectively the same thing in the end.
Nick, like other people who have become disillusioned, has turned 180 degrees in his thinking about corporations, displaying utter cynicism towards them (even though there are still a few areas where he unconsciously displays his corporate-learned biases. These areas have slowly faded with his time on the streets, dealing with the REAL world). He works for money, but doesn't see it as the be all and end all. His principles are more important than compromising himself doing something nasty - he's a professional, not a cheap thug or a prostitute. Nick has so far avoided killing anybody, and hopes to keep it that way (although once or twice he has been tempted, if ever so slightly). Initially, his scruples cost him a few job offers. Over time, though, his reputation as a restrained pro began actually improving his prospects.
Nick is an idealistic and hot-headed individual. He is intelligent, and can even seem contemplative at times, but he strongly believes in trusting his intuition. He thinks that the "right thing" is usually pretty obvious, but people waver and start to rationalize more selfish choices, or let their fears paralyze them, or let other people, or institutions, do their thinking for them. Nick has an almost Zenlike calm that comes from trusting himself, and letting go of the things he can't control. Despite this mellow attitude, he is dedicated, almost driven, to his magical and medical studies.

toturi - We're full for bear at the moment, but you're first alternate in case anyone drops out, or gets geeked.
Tai-Pan - It's all good, original deadline still stands at the moment; as I just got finished a five hour duty watch, and have an inspection and class in the morning I'm a bit wiped, so not really working on the openers
kevyn - History looks excellent, I look forward to receiving the character
Glyph - received and good to go.
Looks like we're on a Friday start time, possibly Thursday, we shall see. Scary fact: for the first time in my GMing history, I've almost got a complete map of a location complete, and a second started, before the run commences...
