Right, so you're a glitch in the system, hired by any and all to get their dirty work done.
After a year of running, you have accumulated (after all upgrades to equipment, weapons, foci, cars, houses etc )
15 million nuyen.gif of clean laundered money.

What do you do with it?
Summerstorm
You have FIFTEEN MILLION? (or plan to give that?) Well, buy a small company or shares in a big one and retire to a nice island, forgetting all the trouble you had... last year.

Normaly my runners retire when they hava a million, or bought themselves permanent high lifestyle or such. (Except the ones who are in for the thrill or revenge or something). But most of course die before they have that kind of money *g*. But really... FIFTEEN million?

On the insane end... you could buy like.. a lvl 12 Powerfocus or such. Or custom built an attack-helicopter in your new combined everything-Facility (600k+Lifestyle i think). Or buy around 10 big nexi, load it up with customized programs and Agents and start attacking the matrix (all of it).

With fifteen million you can go pretty nuts.

This is a 1000 karma character (party average is about 850 karma) and we have been playing the same campaign on and off for the past 10 years. Screw retiring, I like this character and have plenty of unfinished business.

Got the lifestyle, party has two custom helicopters. Got the foci.

Was thinking about the facility.
Perhaps some real estate...
More custom build weapons and armour..... hmmmm..... keep going!
Zak
Getting your own network running can be expensive. Maintaining contacts is expensive. And you mentioned unfinished business. Try subcontracting.

Front your own operations. There are so many options that open up once you don't have to wait for a call or a message in a dead drop.
I have a game running with about the same amount of money floating around (but only around 80 Karma). The cost of their operation (which is an attempt at taking down or at least severely crippling a major organization) is pretty high. They burn through Sins like others eat soyburgers. Same goes for various treatments to fight the paranoia. I think they each spend about 2 million during the last year just for staying alive. Each.

It probably is a different game than the one you play though.

Invest in a yacht. Build a Kaer.
Platinum
Make an ally and funnel the money to crease an android battle robot that the ally can possess. hardened armour with spirit points on top.
Paul
Retire.

So, um, were you expecting us to intuit the archetype via divine inspiration?

Buy a van and get a real guitar player, so I can finally bump that prick we have now who is only in the band because he owns a stage up in Snohomish he lets us use. Use the money to fund a bunch of music videos and our UCAS tour and check in to 5 star hotels every night. As it becomes clear our huge bags of cash have left us out of touch with the common man, begin hitting drugs harder and engage in more promiscuous sex with two-bit prostitutes in sequin-studded high heels. Pay high-powered lawyers to protect us when the drummer shot some dude at the show in Cali Free State. When the keytar player ODs on jazz, beat feet out of the CAS before the cops catch on. Split the band in two over arguments of artistic license. Go on a tour with my ditzy girlfriend singing commercial-punk remakes of 20th century classics. Insult the entire state of Texas while touring there. Disappear from the public eye until my bloated corpse turns up in the Potomac, pumped with enough drugs to form a pharmaceutical company. Girlfriend goes to jail with hardly a nuyen to her name, but charges are dropped because, really, why bother? The remainder of the band splits and reforms under a new name and makes second-rate songs, mostly cynical remakes of top hits, and appears on daytime talk shows until well past middle age, at which point they mostly live off the interest.

That, or maybe buy a helicopter.
CanadianWolverine
Hmm...

Please look into making A Vault, like from Fallout but highest lifestyle, it would be a totally like a paranoid runner to see the world as something they need a bolt hole just in case the nukes start working more reliably again. Plus the earth offers some protection from the astral world, yes?

Other than that, try to go to space with it, why settle for a base on earth? Build Asteroid M or a Moonbase? Alpha Centauri Colony Ship?

That should run you out of cash, I would think, then you gotta earn some more just on the upkeep and buying of supplies to stock those bad ass bolt holes.
Cheshyr
Reinvest it in an illicit drugs and weapons empire. Retire on the proceeds.

Run for president!
Traul
Buy an island in the Caribeans and make it your own country so you can issue SINs.
Sixgun_Sage
If it is a tech based character track down a delta clinic (money will help with finding this place), therapy to remove any existing chrome bits, then go under the knife to get all the enhancements you had andhave ever wanted as deltagrade.

If you don't spend it all, then you don't party hard enough!

Buy enough stock on a corp to get yourself noticed and Hired as an Executive and pursue your agenda from there. Preferably a corp that would want to have similar axe to grind (or be sympathetic to your purpose/unfinished business). Once the unfinnished business is taken care of-retire to a nice warm place.
Marwynn
1000 Karma and 15 million!

How many LAVs do you own? You should invest heavily into the Shadow infrastructure. Set up a shadowbank, or a training school. I'd begin organizing my own shadow teams and start working on my character's angle: love/hate corps, world domination or revenge, etc. and fund it with his money. Engage in your own character's campaign.
Platinum
Most runner teams that I have played on in the past have bought a bar, and outfitted it as a shadowrunner hangout. lots of high level tech and electronics, high force wards, and an armoury in the basement.

Patrick the Gnome
Hire several hundred shadowrunners, equip them all with custom built, full auto high velocity sniper rifles firing APDS bullets and go on a great dragon killing spree.

15 millions will only get you in a small corp: that should be less than 0.005% of an AAA capitalization. Investing the money is a nice idea, though.
Ravor
Meh, I'm with Paul, retire. After all, exactly what kind of "unfinished biz" could a ( 1000 Karma ) character have that was actually important enough to him to keep him in the Shadows? Should have been resolved along time ago.
pbangarth
Retirement seems the best option to me. Some of the suggestions offered here seem to me to require far more than a mere 15 million. People who are worth 15 million today are not the movers and shakers in society. 15 billion, maybe. Check out Ralph Nader's new novel, "Only the Super-rich Can Save Us."
Chrysalis
Become a professional fixer, 15 million is nice seed money, but you need to be making about that much a year to be on the map in most places. The job is to make some very smart purchases and investments so that you can in 10 years or so retire with 150 billion nuyen. I want to buy the AAA luxury lifestyle.

The short answer with such a sum: not enough.

Umm, you could buy Luxury in every category, with Luxury (AAA) in neighborhood which is the only category to have something higher than luxury for 12.5 million, take the No Neighbors quality and that bumps it up to 15 million and you would have the proverbial 'MY ISLAND'.
OneTrikPony
I'm with Chrysalis. You could make your way to becoming a mid level fixer in what ever town you're in.

I like PtG's idea alot too wink.gif

A small corp has allies (otherwise it is a bad investment). So it would still be usefull in terms of solving his loose ends. Besides, if he does well there, he can then make himself a viable candidate for promotion which includes hefty stock options. Should he of course support the right faction in the board---well let's just say his protfolio should get bigger. A A rated corp would still be more powerful than most crime syndicates, and it also gives you a legal way to "transfer" funds.
Kliko
What was the cost for a leonization treatment again?
Hero
Open up a small arms manufacturing facility that prototypes odd designs for the big corps since there investors dont like to was R&D money on to odd of ideas, along with just making small production runs of replica firearms and special weapons and parts that would be popular with Special Forces and the occassional runner team. Like a new receiver to let his old AR use large full sized rifle cartridges instead, seems like all the big manufactures forgot about these types of assault rifles and even how to put 4 potion front rail systems on most assault rifles, assault shotguns and some of the larger submachineguns/carbines.
Hagga
Get infected and become a vampire, or see if your GM will let you take (exceptional agility) and SURGE for metagenetic enhancement (reaction).

Then buy the following, deltaware, barring the geneware: Bone Desnity Augmentation 4, Muscle Aug 2, Muscle Toner 3, Platelet Factories, Digestive Expansion, Sleep REgulator, Suprathyroid Gland, Trauma Damper, Synaptic Booster 3, Hyper Glucagon, Genetic Optimization (Agility, Body, Reaction, Strength). Round down to the nearest essence point with delta damage compensators. Train everything to max stats, wich I imagine you're close to already. Et voila, 10/12/12/8 human! Or whatever you are.

Wow. I'm a "carebear" GM but damn, nobody's getting 1000 karma or 15 million in the bank in my campaign. Sure miracles happen but with the lethality rate and such, just wow.

Okay, how about this. There is a successful fixer named Reno in downtown Seattle. He operates a grill and bar named after himself. He's been a fixer for over 20 years now so the guy's doing something right. Give this guy some cash and have him teach you the fixer trade. And if that doesn't sound fun give him some cash to invest for you. I bet he knows some people.

Whatever your skillset is, use it to maximize your potential profit. You're a razorguy? Open a security agency. A mage? Go with all things mystical. A hacker? Program something!!! Hire a bunch of SINless nerds and make bank! Oh, and exploit the hell out of the SINless. Cheap labor man.

Delta grade bio and cyberware. My wishlist for my combat mage has 4.8 mil in Delta grade 'ware. With the cash you're throwing out... I would still have 10 mil to play with... grinbig.gif

If you've already got needs covered, and you just want to spend the money...

Set up a score. The biggest one you can imagine. The Shadowrun equivalent of Ocean's Eleven, where you hire a ton of talent and get them all working different angles to let you pull off the kind of impossible run that legends are made of. Assassinating world leaders is close, but too crude for my tastes. Acquiring compromising photos of the entire Council of Princes just for a laugh (Laes is, and has always been, our friend and ally) would do. Redecorate the Aztechnology Pyramid a little - pastels are in this year. Convince a world leader to hold a press conference based on completely absurd information (e.g. sexy alien invasion, paracritter polar bears discovered by an elven research team based at the North Pole being recognized as a sapient species, a dangerous new drug streetnamed SMARTS being banned in the UCAS and possession of SMARTS being a felony...) Achieve one of the 'impossible' bequests. Con world leaders into declaring war...or peace...or surrendering to a nation that wasn't expecting it. Hire enough mercs to take back Chicago from the bugs - name it after yourself. Rebuild Shadowland. Foreclose on every Humanis Policlub property simultaneously. Pick a corp you suspect of metahuman rights abuse; get proof and go public, watch 'em sweat.

Ryu
A nice manor located on a ley line, enough money set aside to pay for a cyberlogician that works as personal assistant, your personal magical order, a few foci for the members of said order, leftovers go into The Exchange as seed money.

It's hard to imagine a terrifying Aztech bloodmage performing a sacrifice in a room that's painted with sponge walls of a lovely cool blue colour. Not to mention that darling hand made rug you picked up in Peru, and a heated slab for the sacrifice - no need for them to be uncomfortable. Or hungry - coffee service cart, anyone?

Near immortality, the tropics... the only thing to make it better could be... 'boats and hoes'!

Can't the kaer double as an evil lair?
Mystweaver
Gotta say I'm loving some of these crazy ideas.

Investing into corps is a good way to go, and although I haven't done it yet, I suppose a good way of doing it would be to hire a team to steal something of significance from one corporation (perhaps their latest prototype of a burst firing railgun). Once the job is done and their stock falls, invest a couple of million and let that corp recover.

Then, sell said prototype to Ares AFTER you invest the rest of the cash in Ares.

When Ares releases the product, their share price rises and I make more that it cost to do all of the above.

Then... rince and repeat.

Also, this 1000 karma character of mine has been running ingame for just over a year and our team has never failed a mission (with exception of being double crossed by various johnsons which; usually end up dead and our rep has never suffered from).

With regards to unfinished business, let me think... In my campaign, we are using a non-canon timeline. It is 2065, we are involved with Bug City, Harliquin and Dunklezahn Campaigns (yes Dunklezahn is dead), let alone others that involve various horrors coming to bump us off every now again and some serious Shadem shananagans.

Having spirits track you down frequently means retiring will be difficult.

Other ideas I like here are things such as building a base. This was something our team did recently at an abandonned school in the Redmund Barrens. We reinforced the building and included rediculous amounts of security and defensive measures including a hydrolic helicopter pad that raises our stealth apache gunship ready for take-off....

Unfortunately, the entire facility got destroyed by Aztechnology when they assaulted it with 6 fully loaded banshee gunships filled with men. We managed to get all but one which we followed back to the Pyramid where we made our counter assault. At this point we got locked in the Pyramid and had to fight our way out. Sodding Deus.

Essentially our GM runs multiple simultanious campaigns from 1ed and integrates them into one gigantic campaign.
He's pretty crazy, but it makes for one hell of a story to play through.
Kagetenshi
You still haven't said what archetype the character is, unless I missed something. It's pretty difficult to make a reasonable recommendation without that.

~J
Lok1 :)
Set yourself up as a arms-drugs dealer, big time. Also getting a private sanctem and a trophy wife, then use all the power you get from your bussines to get revenge/tie up lose ends.
Or do something compleatly fucking crazy, I think their was a thread pondering the fate of Captian Chaos a while back........
Mystweaver
Fair point... I purposefully left it vague to see what crazy stuff people would come up with without being specific. However, considering there has been quite a few useful comments to say the least... My character is a Chinese Adept with a specialist in Melee Combat - Specifically with a Katana and Wakizashi... No Cyberware or Bioware involved.

He is also a Drake and has a couple of points in Magic power so can cast spells.

Clearly, I didnt start my character this way, these things we gained through roleplay in various funky ways.

Oh and to put another cat amongst the pigeons, I have 25mil saved so far nyahnyah.gif
Kagetenshi
I guess he isn't holding a grudge over the occupation, then wink.gif

Weapon foci and power foci are the obvious choices, along with a nice ride of appropriate type. Then you need a musical instrument… wait, I need to go start another thread now.

You wanted to know what's on my wish list... here's my "wish list":

Total Cost in nuyen.gif 4,818,500
Total Cost in Essence: 1.9812

Cyberware
  1. Datajack
  2. Cybereyes Basic System (Rating 3) with Flare Compensation, Thermographic Vision, Low-Light Vision, Vision Enhancement (Rating 3), Vision Magnification, Eye Light System, Protective Covers
  3. Cyberears (Rating 2) with Audio Enhancement (Rating 3), Balance Augmenter, Damper
  4. Obvious Lower Leg (right) w/ Hardening (Rating 6), Armor (Rating 1), Body (Rating 2), Auto-Injector (Reusable) & 6 Extra Doses, Commlink (6/6) with Sim & Fetch Module (Rating 3), Guardian Angel & Nanohive (Rating 6)
  5. Obvious Full Hand (left) w/ Auto-Injector (Reusable) & 6 Extra Doses, Ultrasound Sensor, & Olfactory Booster (Rating 6)
  6. Obvious Full Hand (right) w/ Auto-Injector (Reusable) & 6 Extra Dose, RADAR Sensor (Rating 4), Orientation System, & Cyber Safety

Bioware
  1. Synaptic Booster 2
  2. Enhanced Articulation
  3. Platelet Factories
  4. Synthacardium 2
  5. Trauma Damper
  6. Sleep Regulator
  7. Bone Density 1
  8. Genewipe
Hagga
Huh. Walking drug factory.

Mine was the following, complete: Deltabioware: Bone Density Augs 4, Digestive Expansion, Muscle Aug 2, Muscle Toner 3, Platelet Factories, Sleep Regulator, Suprathyroid Gland, Trauma Damper, Synaptic Booster 3, Damage Compensators 4.
Deltacyberware: Imagelink, Smartlink, Orientation System, Implanted Fairlight Caliban, and a nanoware biomonitor. Genetech was just Genetic Optimization for Agility, Body, Reaction, Strength and Willpower, with HyperGlucagon. I couldn't figure out how to stuff a Simrig in there.

Total cost is up around 6 million or so nuyen.

Sure, you lose four points of magic and it's reliant on two expensive qualities, but who cares?!

More like walking medical supplies depot.

You can put things like Trauma Patches into a liquid form and use the auto-injector (tied to a bio-monitor) and maybe save your sorry hide. Also, Savior Nanites can also be put into liquid form and they too can be injected using the auto-injector.
Khyron
You could have an underwater fortress built.

You could invest in runners to bring down a small nation. Like NAN or Tir.

You could buy a crap load of explosives and rig all of Seattle to go off with a single switch "just in case."

Buy a second hand destroyer and become sea pirates/piracy protection service.

Set up a series of hacking events that lead to all aircraft being crashed into Lofwyr all throughout a single day. Just because.

Space Program!
Thanee
Do the obvious thing... give it to me, so I can retire with permanent luxury lifestyle in your stead and you can keep running! grinbig.gif

Why not a UV host and never leave?

(Another way to get the Boats and Hoes dream...)

- J.
Traul
Come on...

For 15 millions, you can afford the real stuff. Even if the sensory experience is 100% realistic in a UV host, you would still know it's not real, unless you are dumped there without being told.
Mystweaver
Second Hand Destroyer will still cost more than 25 mil as would bringing down NAN or TIR, that would require billions.

Seattle explosions sound like fun but not appropriate.

Got the weapon focus, and saving karma to bind to a power focus 10.
In fact when it comes to foci, I'm almost addicted so I have to be careful; even with a magic rating of 22 (grade 16 initiate).

Groovy medical supplies - yes indeedy. The healing nanites are cool for the reduction of time for longterm healing.

Getting a groovy ride is actually already on order... armoured bike that is.

Getting capillary blade in my offhand to inject nanite cutters into the wound or any other deadly compound. Something useful like Neurostun 10 is nice cos then I'll be doing physical AND stun damage in the same attack.

Underwater fortress is a cool idea, would also need subs and I think the production of such a fascility would again cost considerably more than 15-25mil to create... even with the assistance of powerful water elementals and sea spirits.
