If this adorable little thing doesn't remind you of a Dodge Scoot or a Honda Spirit, I dunno what real-world car ever will. grinbig.gif

Original Article:

I'm holding out for someone to release an Americar, personally.

Cars kill people!

We should regulate who can operate vehicles with some kind of licensing system!

Sorry...

It looks like it'll fit in the trunk of my car.

*strokes mustache* I to feel that there should be some kind of system designed to limit who can own and operate such dangerious de-vi-souses. My constituents are highly concerned about SINless individuals clogging up their roads, which they, the tax payers, have obviously paid for. Having such an inexpensive automobile is a danger to honest, hardworking individuals. Additionally, it is irresponcible to use fossil fuels when we have a perfectly capable GridGuide system in place. This is just a marketing gimmick meant to undermine our soverienty.

I'm sure I've been saying this for at least a decade. Crap, I'm old!

$600??? Seriously? Hell, I'll buy one. Really, its carbon fiber, at that price? I'm also suspicious because the source article doesn;t mention any price. I suspect it might be some kind of mis-translation of "model 600".

Wonder how easy it is to soup up the enegine? With such low weight and drag, it wouldn't take much extra power to produce good acceleration and really high top speeds (think better than sports-car level roll on / passing acceleration). Doubt the handling and brakes are up to it, but...
Shinobi Killfist
Even if it goes for $600 in china(which I kind of doubt) if it made it to any other market it would be at least 10X more expensive and probably much more than that in the states. You charge what you think people will pay for it, not what it costs and what a "decent" profit would be.
Daylen
I'm all for people driving those. that way when they stop short in front of me I just feel a little bump.

I always thought the Americar was a Ford Taurus.

Just lampooning the gun control debate which sprouted from the last Real Life vs. Shadowrun topic. wobble.gif

True, but that's why haggling exists. Americans have to realize that they don't have to pay sticker price on everything. If one of those shows up in a car lot around here I will buy one and I will bargain the price down to under $1000. Because I know how much it cost them to get, and they won't get a 4 digit number off me.

Of course, it'd be a summer car. No way that thing could handle the snow.

Anyone else, while thinking about driving that thing, wonder if it can actually hold all of their rule books they usually bring when they go somewhere? I was.

Put it on a sled and push it. Looks small enough for it.

O.O

....I want one. Just for the irony value of a muscular 6' tall man driving it. That and if all else fails, I can park it in the bed of one of the locals' trucks biggrin.gif
In all seriousness, though, I'd LOVE to have that thing.

Yeah. I did, so I dug until I found interior pictures. Its got a decent sized back seat, so as long as its just you, you could carry a fair ammount of books / groceries / laundry etc. I don't think it has a trunk though, so as soon as you pick up a passenger, you loose all your cargo space. Not so good for married people as a primary vehicle; I can see the market flooding with used versions as young single people get married and sell them off for something that can carry two people, cargo, and maybe a child or two.

Don't think of it as a small car. Think of it as a large carbon fiber motorcycle with a steering wheel. I'm sure SOMEBODY will offer a kit that lets you pull out the 1 liter diesel and drop in a high performance motorcycle engine. You can do that for a Smart Car and get super-car spec acceleration. MPG would obviously go through the floor...

hmm, if i am reading this page right:
http://www.seriouswheels.com/cars/top-vw-1-liter-car.htm

the engine is rear mounted, and naturally it has rear wheel drive.

as someone that had parents that owned a original vw beetle, the rear engine pressing down on the drive wheels made the vehicle a better then expected winter vehicle. And thats on norwegian winter roads wink.gif

sure, hit a buried stretch of road, and your probably going to get stuck. But unless your driving a monstrosity like the hummer, that will apply for all cars.

oh, and here is another interesting ride:

If its going for 6,000-10,000 like I'd expect or something similar I doubt you will bargain it down to under 1,000 if it is even remotely popular. Yes we can haggle, but if I know I'm selling my stock off because an item is hot, I'm not taking a $5,000+hit on a sale out of a $6,000 item. On top of that given our regulatory systems even if it is a $600(which again I doubt) it will cost the dealer more than $600 to get it here.

TBH, I'd do the research to know what a reasonable offer was. The number I tossed out was a "if they can get it for $600, then $1200 means they double their money" and is fairly reasonable. If its $700 for the car with $500 in shipping + some commission, then...a $1500 offer is reasonable.

Mind they throw taxes and some other crap on top of that (the car I have now my dad dealed them down to including all those fees into the price, effectively chopping $500 off)

Well sure, but it depends on what they normally can sell it for. It doesn't matter to them if it only cost them $1.50 if the guy standing behind you is going to pay $10,000 and they have limited stock they will sell it to the guy behind you and not you. Items that are hot and if this makes it to our market I think it will be hot don't haggle down to reasonable offers they haggle down to not much less than they think they can get from the next guy. Hey if you live in a community of hard ass hagglers who wont pay more than the reasonable amount they might get stuck accepting that, but outside of that on Hot items its in the salesmans interest to say no. Now if this isn't hot and they have them just sitting on there lots yes, you can haggle them down to a reasonable amount without a problem.
