Adam's pretty swamped so I thought I might as well pimp this week's website update. Drop by and check out the 12 page advanced peek of the upcoming Corporate Enclaves book including the table of contents and samples from all the chapters.

Love the P2.0=Facebook thing.

LA looks like a perfect place to run a classic 80's style over substance campaign where runners not only all stand out like sore thumbs, they'll mug for the security camera's
Smilin_Jack
I really like the P2.0 section from LA and the little preview of the Tokyo (no matter what I'll never call it Neo-Tokyo nyahnyah.gif ) zoku.

From the limited excerpts from the Tokyo chapter - this sounds like it will really open up Japan for both high level runners and street level games.

I...like what I see just fine, but don't really see anything that makes me want to go buy it. In this case, I'd say that surely has to do solely with the subject matter, and not the quality or presentation, though. To be honest, I'd honestly even forgotten a "Corporate Enclaves" book was on the way, I'd glossed over it so much.

Yeah, a run to Japan can be a pretty cool climax to a campaign. I've never run a full campaign in Tokyo, mainly because I think it would be very difficult to pull off, without it just coming across as Seattle with different street names. I'm so used to the culture, politics, and general "tone" of Seattle that it's tough for me to keep from falling back on it when forced to ad-lib or come up with something on relatively short notice.

I do really enjoy occasional jaunts to other plex's though. It can add a lot of spice if done right. You can focus on the broad stereotypes but still have it come across as cool and exotic. Meeting at bunraku parlours, different companies working as cops, ect. all adds a lot of cool factor but moderation has always been the key for me.

To be fair, I love the setting books as a general rule though. Even if you never run a campaign in the city, it's still cool to have PC's, NPC's and other bits of different parts of the world trickle in. The setting books, if nothing else give pretty cool character ideas and ways to offer glimpses into the broader world, which makes the entire campaign more convincing.

For example. My current character is a combat hacker who literally stepped off the plane from Osaka and got his first glimpse of Seattle on the first session. Playing someone who grew up in a very traditional Japanese Yakuza clan is really fun. Since his clan was wiped out at the hands of a rival, and a traitor within he's made it his life's goal to hunt that traitor down. He's followed him to Seattle after undergoing that gene replacement therapy and so he's provided a lot of plot hooks too.

Edit:
Since the team is still to fresh on the street to have access to a resource like Shadowland (er jackpoint) he relies on his Osaka connections to get information that might otherwise be unaccessible. I try my best to put as many little quirks into him as possible that make him seem more "Japanese", a lot of it is stereotypes but it helps make him seem different in my mind at least. He never gets angry, always takes himself very seriously (well I got a little goofy on the last run but that might have been the cold medication), he's the sort of guy who'll apologize for shooting you if he has nothing against you personally. Would I want to run an entire campaign with characters like that? I don't really think so but he's fun for something exotic.

Oh I ran a street level game in Tokyo earlier this year... It sounds like this might burst the seems of the Tokyo open even more than I did for that game though.

I'm really interested in Corporate Enclaves seeing as I've already run a game there and I want to see how some of the changes I've made will integrate with the official setting and to strip mine for ideas.

Yah. *bangs his plate on the table*

Judging by recent releases, almost certainly within the next week, and possibly tomorrow.

Should be interesting, I've been working a bit on house rules for the UNL, some current (4e/2070) info on Europort should help quite a bit.

Oh, lord. Los Angeles is the new Caribbean? Awesome...
Seven-7
Los Angeles? I thought it was going to be Las Vegas!

Meh, Las Vegas would have made more sense as a corporate town anyhow, with the 'casino corps' and all. I'm not trying to nay-say the book, but Los Angeles storyline is far from par and looking to be the Seattle of Runner Havens, while Neo-Tokyo looks to be the Hong Kong. Anyone else notice this trend?

corporate enclaves has NERPS =)

Hah! Seven-7, you have no idea how completely backwards that statement is.

You're not really selling the book there AH. I know a lot of people (myself included) were really looking forward to the Nippon section because it has always been an important part of the setting but it's never been really well described. A good in-depth loction section on the second largest sprawl on the planet was really needed. If you're telling me that it looks like a commitee phoned it in that would make me sad.

Meanwhile I don't really think that the LA storyline is salvageable. It was dumb and perplexing back in CFS and every time it has been revisited in any way it has gotten astoundingly worse. YotC was confusing and retarded. The SR4 main book's take was world destroying, and the blurb in Street Magic was even worse. The LA section could be made out of liquid gold by a master crafter and it would still slump over because a foundation of shit simply cannot hold.

So if you're telling me that the setting which is just kind of "meh" and exists mostly to fill page count is the one which had unlimited possibility, and the one which is inspired and well focused is the one which is already constrained by a backstory so bad that it creates a palpable miasma that taints and corrodes the rest of the setting - then you're making me very very sad.

Don't forget, he was being condescending and rude to a customer while explaining that, too. But no one really cares about that sort of thing, it's just the interwebs.

I just wish I could get something on London. I am basing my current group there. Any help on this? I cannot find the old London sourcebook, but that is woefully out of date I would imagine. I do have SoE, and that section is great, but not enough detail. Any hope on the Horizon in this area?

On a side note: KK I thought I remembered that your current campaign is in the UK, any tips?
Demonseed Elite
I'm not really sure what AH was trying to say, but I don't think I agree with it. But really, I'll leave it up to the readers to decide how they feel about Neo-Tokyo, Los Angeles, etc. I'm not about to try to color anyone's feelings on any section before the book is even out for them to read.
Smilin_Jack
Hey Demonseed...

After looking at the TOC I'm hoping you can confirm you included at least something about the Triads and Vory in the "Free Agents" portion of the Underworld section. Though I think I would of preferred them to be in a "Other minor mobs" instead of a Free Agents section.....

Especially after the mention (in SoA) about them finally sneaking into the Tokyo underworld thanks to the destabilization from the RoF Eruption.
Demonseed Elite
I didn't write that chapter of the Neo-Tokyo section, so I can't really comment on what is in it. Sorry!
Smilin_Jack
Aaaaargh.

No problem, I know I'm buying the darn book once its available - but that chapter along with the Nerve Centers chapter and Maps are really the only things I'm interested in. nyahnyah.gif

Demonseed Elite
Well, I did write the Nerve Centers chapter.
Smilin_Jack
That's ok... I've got my trusty sharpie ready for editing duties. nyahnyah.gif

Actually after already running a Tokyo game in seat-of-the-pants mode - I for one welcome our new moe-zoku overlords... erm, I mean a sourcebook so I don't have to pull stuff outa my butt all the damn time next time I GM.

Now if they'd make it available to purchase already.....
