Full Version: Knight Rider movie looks like it's gonna suck

I think that the upcoming Knight Rider TV movie is going to suck on the basis that the male lead looks like a wuss. See photo and blurb here: http://www.nbc.com/Knight_Rider/bios/index.shtml

This guy just looks like a handsome movie star type. If he and David Hasslehoff got into the Thunderdome, Hasslefhoff would win at the one minute and thirty second mark by Sufforcating Teabag. Bruening, in the picture, looks like he should be a hairdresser, or perhaps primping at a gay bar.

The character he plays is supposed to be this jaded ex Army Ranger. But, see, Rangers are supposed to be tough. Now, when you look at that picture, what's the first thing you think? Is it "tough" or is it "metrosexual"? The looks is not believable for the character.

Why have the people casting these things seemingly lost touch with the Conans and the Rambos? If you look at Stallone in Rambo 4, he looks *tough*. If you look at Arnie in Conan the Barbarian, you don't look at him and immediately feel underwhelmed by a sensation of wussiness.

Knight Rider is about an intelligent car so it's presumably directed more at men rather than women as a target audience. I could understand a metrosexual looking male lead if the show was supposed to appeal to women. But as a male if a character is supposed to be a hard-bitten ranger I want him to look more along the lines of Rambo in Rambo 4. Seriously. How can I exult in his heroicness or his epic toughness when he looks like the damn hairdresser? How can I believe he's a hard bitten combat vet if he looks so utterly metrosexual and preoccupied with his appearance?

But, but, he went like a week without shaving for the part!

QUOTE (That Site You Linked)
While working on "All My Children," Bruening guest-starred on the comedy "Hope and Faith" and the short lived series "3 lbs." Additionally, he gave a memorable performance in the feature-film festival favorite "Fat Girls." He was also featured as one of "Daytime's Hottest Stars" in Teen People, Us Weekly, Star and J-14 magazines.

Bruening really does have a purty mouth on him. the metrosexual look on a grizzled, tough badass could be really cool if done right... but i don't think Knight Rider is going to do it right.

Knight Rider, the infodaytimedramamercial.

Knight Rider isn't meant to sell cars. It is meant to sell the Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500KR Super Snake.

Let's break down what that means. You start with a 2008 Ford Mustang GT, one of the best muscle cars in production today. Then you take that super-powered muscle car to Shelby Motors, where they strip it down and rebuild it from the ground up to be absurdly overpowered. It has 725 horsepower and guzzles gas as if it were cheap beer. It's a man's car. It's a man's man's car.
Critias
Which is why people are wondering how/why the sissy got ahold of one.

I think he looks like he could be David Hasslehoff's son, but I think David Hasslehoff looks like he could play a hairdresser. Mr. Hasslehoff is hardly comparable to Rambo/Stallone or Conan/Schwartzeneger. He doesn't even look as tough as Chuck Norris, even without the manly beard. Even Bruce Willis looks more manly than David Hasslehoff.

Can you tell I think Hasslehoff looks like a candyass? He might be able to take Robbie Benson or some kid from a boy band (before they grew up) in a Thunderdome Fight. Which reminds me of Mel Gibson and come to think of him some guys with similar non-musclebound builds like Harrison Ford, or even Kurt Russel.

Its a tv series not movie.

And the guy who was going to do Kit's voice had to bail cuz he also does the voice overs in some chevy commercial or some crap. Now its going to be Val Kilmer lol.

I really hate the 90's and 2000's for giving up on trying to be creative and just vomiting back up the shows from the past and making all these retro movies and retro tv shows. Those people who decide to do that should be shot. Just play the originals jerk offs.

That said....Bionic woman wasnt that bad and was even very shadowrunny. Knight Rider was one of my favorite shows as a child. I hope this new one will be worth watching. I doubt it will last for more than 2 seasons though. If the retards cant come up with an original show you know they dont have the brain power to think up that many new episodes lol. But I will give it a shot...

Let's see... whats on deck to be bastardized next...the love boat!! I havent seen a retro movie or tv series of it yet!!
Wounded Ronin
See, the idea behind the original Knight Rider was to take the heroic wandering cowboy archetype with the steed and make that adapted to the 80s. So we got a disconsolate lone wolf Vietnam vet with a metal plate in his head with the black trans am that could do anything because of its "microchips" and "circuits", including parse the English language better than Leather Goddess of Phobos.

That's why the idea as being presented now doesn't work. Breuning doesn't look anything like a heroic wandering disconsolate ex-military proto-cowboy. They should've cast Clint Eastwood instead.

what th... even Bruce Willis? Bruce Willis is all that is man, you heathen.

is anyone else vaguely weirded out by the parallels that Hollywood tries to make beteen Nam vets and Iraq vets? maybe it's because Vietnam had stopped being a reasonable war to be a heroic veteran from by the time i really started paying attention to movies, in my mid-teens, and nothing really came along to replace it--there was some attempt to use the Gulf War the way Vietnam had been used, but it just never seemed believable to me. using the veteran-from-the-latest-and-greatest war trope just strikes me as being so... trite and silly.

Exactly. They should have gone with Clint Eastwood and had him be a Vietnam vet.

It's a tv movie that may serve as the pilot for a series that will die a painful death much like Bionic Woman but without the mercy of brevity that Drive was given.

And Will Arnett is awesome. I want to believe that the conflict of interest was raised after he got paid and thought "But I'm still attached to this nonsense. Oh, wait! I've got it." followed by a phone call to GM.

And that is undesirable, why?

Softcore is actually worse because children tend to fill in the blanks with their imagination.
For a very a very long time, before I learned of the existence of the vagina, I thought that babies came out of the woman's butt. I assure you, that little mistaken assumption led to some very bizarre dreams.

Yeah, its silly to build a super AI that adults can hack. Teenagers and precocious preteens, sure; they can hack anything. But adult Blackwater mercenaries shouldn't be able to hack that well.

I must say that Bruening was okay as the comic relief sidekick that he played for the first two thirds of the movie but sucked as a protagonist. I almost felt like I was watching Shia Lebouf in transformers, only Shia was more baddass than Bruening.

There was also a bit of tactical stupidity that no Ranger would make, but that can only be blamed on the writers.

Drive was actually pretty good. The concept may seem silly, but really no more so that the massive conspiracies of 24 and such. The show was very well executed; the characters were likable, the writing with above par, and the acting was excellent. It really shouldn't have been canceled.

Dig out the old BMW 'movies' they made, make it Ford instead, make an asinine plot to tie it altogether and imagine the lead actor is actually a tranny.

I liked the fact that they took every chance they could to mention 'hey, this is a Ford! Buy Ford. We have four new models of Ford you can buy, and while none of them talk or deflect bullets, they're all Ford.'

I wish they'd at least included turbo boost somewhere.

Wait. What?

24 is awful. Is comparing the two supposed to make me think more highly of Drive, which was just another waste of film? Seriously, I disagree with you about every one of those things you wrote.

wow, that was terrible. like, i knew it'd be bad, but not that bad.

You know, I'm not sure how I feel about the show. On the one hand, the acting is as wooden as Howdy-Doody. The story is weak, the plot thin. But let's face it, we turned into the original to see cool cars doing cool things, and on that level, Knight Rider 2008 delivers. There's also a lot of homages to the original series, starting with the theme music and running straight through to the end; that's also what we tuned in to see.

So, there's not much wrong with the series that some improvements in direction and story would fix. All they need is a new director, and an end to the writer's strike. I'd be interested in seeing where a series based on this pilot would go, if they can do something about these problems.

One thing that was retro about the show was how the female lead was wussy. Her character was a throwback to the days when the lead female would stand around being useless while the male lead was in some desperate hand to hand struggle with the villian.

Well, I watched it alongside my little sister. She liked the theme music, and when I said they borrowed some from the old show, she told me she had never seen the old show. Made me feel old. frown.gif

The car was alright, and they did go way out on the tech for it. Nanotech rebuilders to instantly repair damage and alter the exterior of the car(change paint color, type of car, add/remove fins), 156 miles/gallon, gasoline and solar powered, speeds up to 200+mph, and of course thermal scanners and instant massive computer network access, military spy satellite access and internet. And Val Kilmer doing the voice for KITT. No turbo boost so far and I am sooo glad. They way overdid that on the old series, IMO.

My only other complaint is that college roomy seems like the token "guy of some other color" so it didn't look so much like an all white show. Yes, I know the FBI agent woman was black, but at least she had a reason to be there. Roomy just seemed like he's gonna be the "hostage of the week".

That's the other thing. Apparently the super magical diamond shielding on the TransAm is better than the nanotech instant repair stuff in the Mustang because it's not going to totally go away just because the computer system is shut down.

Remember how there was an episode where Hasslehoff has to rescue a young female Army lieutenant who has been confined inside a tank by the villians which is being used as a practice target for Army artillery? So Kitt is driving on the artillery range, and the villian tells the soldiers that Kitt's a drone target and they'll get three days off if they hit it. We see Kitt taking fire from mutliple artillery pieces and not taking a scratch in that episode.

The inactive diamond whatever shielding is clearly superior to the nanotech especially seeing as it can apparently withstand artillery hits. I mean, what more could you possibly need than that which nanotech is going to supply at the cost of being a lot less reliable?

I'm not sure that I liked it. Or that I hate it. I honestly don't know how I feel about the show. I did discover that the script was written in 12 days, just before the writer's strike went into effect. So, there's no telling what this show can become with a decent story and direction. I do think that the show can work, if you fix these issues.
