Declining literacy will likely increase demand for physical print, as an immediately recognizable way of showing one's status. "Hey, I'm reading an actual book - I'm more important, better educated, and much richer than you!"

Paper is likely lab-created in most cases, though I'm guessing natural paper still exist in some regard.

Also, remember that there's a 'printer' accessory to commlinks even in the basic rulebook -- a fairly cheap one, at that. That's a clear indication that print media is still widely used. (There's also numerous SR art-pieces showing newspapers, but that's not quite an indication of canon fluff, I know...)

A lot of the print media is probably AR-enhanced, though, carrying virtual links to pop-up AR videos, changing pictures, and other sensory information.

I like the way you think. A lot.

We should make newspapers out of marijuana instead. When you're done, just roll 'em and light 'em grinbig.gif

I also like this, but sadly hemp carries no THC. Its used for many things but yes, modern laws to make it difficult to use on a wide scale. Its used in decent form in fabrics though. I don't care for it compared to cotton because of the actual fiber structure but for print media it could be effective theoretically.

Amongst other things, the THC makes for lousy paper and other industrial products. That's why there's a difference between Hemp and Marijuana, despite their being very damn near the same plant.

I was under the thought that it was all the Cannabis Sativa plant and not a different species of the Cannibis family.

HAHA! No worries, I was just under the understanding it was the same plant but the THC was removed in the process. Not a hippy here, just know a lot about fabrics and such. smile.gif
bibliophile20
It is the same plant; the THC is in the leaves and flowers, and what's used for the fabric/rope/cord/etc is the stems.

Ah, knew I should have talked to my parents before I posted.

I remember when they were teaching me to share, "Remember, it's Puff-Puff-Pass." nyahnyah.gif

Actually my Father's a Hippie, my Mother's an Earth Child, and my Stepfather was a Biker.

Canadian, USer, could have happened either side of the border.

Yeah, yeah...excuses, excuses! I've spent enough time in Canada (and even more with Canadians; 6 years with a Canadian girlfriend, and my current fiancee of 3 years is half-canadian; plus a number of canadian friends) to know how it is over there... grinbig.gif

But I hear you: dad used to be a biker and mom was something of a flower child in her youth. I know how it can be, and I'm all the way over in Europe! wink.gif

Oh, a "Canadian Girlfriend", is it? wink.gif nyahnyah.gif

Yeah, we're pretty laid back here.

Shifting back on topic a bit, there's a mention here or there about bloggers and 'citizen reporting' where people break out their cyber eyes/ears, or just whip out their commlink's built-in recorder, to observe and report on stuff. I'm a tad behind on books like Corp Int or Conspiracies ... has anyone (Horizon and Evo the most likely) harnessed this yet?
CanRay
Horizon uses it, IIRC. KSAF uses it for sure. And I think one of the Mayors of Seattle (Tacoma?) is suggesting "Citizen Snitching" to the populous.
Blade
Seattle 2072 has introduced (or developed, I'm not completely sure) the Gestalt Consciousness Network and Horizon's interest in it might hint at the corp trying to harness that power.

Paul
For me the jury is still out on the Gestlat/Collective stuff with Horizon.
ravensmuse
Myself, I think there's way too much effort to swing Horizon from one spectrum to another. Suddenly we go from "they're too nice - there's something wrong!" to "Soylent Green is people!".

It's called subtlety, people.
Wakshaani
Well, there was a changing of the guard in between as well.

Working on it!

When did we get the Soylent Green moment for Horizon? Anyone want to point me to it? Is it somewhere in the Horizon adventures? because I didn't read any of those. The first didn't interest me. It sounded like the part of Horizon we already knew, then I missed the rest
Wakshaani
I don't think we've had it. We have them breaking into Jackpoint and getting files on the posters there. We have them knowing about Sunshine early on in his investigation and even getting a personal message from Gary CLine in the aftermath. There are rumors about villages in the middle of nowhere that are moving around, dealing with "invisible reality" and possibly a factory where everyone lights up and moves, zombie-like, to deal with intruders. Those last two are, of course, unreliable. Beyond that, there's nothing that's been dropped to suggest that they're anything other than FutureGoogle. The shiny has chipped off a bit, explosing the fact that, yes, they do like profit and like it a lot, but they've been on the side of Amazonia against Aztlan, and that goes far towards showing you as a white hat.

I'm interested in hearing what people have seen that suggests otherwise, of course.
CanRay
Um, they're a corporation, the fact that they like profit is defined by their name. Nothing shiny dropped off that. And donating a portion to AID Packages to the civilian victims of the war, when they can't write it off in taxes (As they're their own country!) is pretty telling as well, even if it is just done for PR.

There's something going on with them, but it remains to be seen if it's corporate-wide or just a few bad apples in a massive company. (Let's face it, there's at least one guy in every Military Company, no matter how disciplined or well-trained, who is going to go, "LET'S DO THE WHOLE F***ING VILLAGE!!!" Even if he's just quoting the movie to be an ass. nyahnyah.gif)

Gonna bump this thread because I found an article this morning while doing my blog reading and thought it was fairly relevant for this discussion. It appears that 2012 is expecting to hit the magazine industry pretty harshly and many women's magazines are preparing for that with some strategies.

Linky.

I know I was absolutely blown away when I grabbed Vanity Fair a month or so ago and it was around 100 pages en total. And that was WITH a naked Lady Gaga picture in it! I thought the magazine was about tanked after seeing that!

Weird things happening in 2012 wink.gif

"Reality" TV. The horror... THE HORROR!!!

I know it sounds lame but its pretty much as big of a deal as when Anna Wintour started putting celebs on the cover of Vogue over super models. I don't have any interest in reality TV stars beyond laughing at them so I don't think its going to influence my purchasing but who knows. Celebs worked for Anna!

Hates it, I do! Detests it! Wants my preciouses back!!!
