Sorry for not posting for a while...life has been getting in the way...clinical depression rocks like that.

Anyhoo, normal service will resume by the end of the week.

noonesshowmonkey
I'd be into a shot at gaming on the boards.

I haven't ever done a play by post. I have been around on the boards awhile, but never really dipped into the Welcome to the Shadows section.

I can do whatever needs done for characters... Probably a physad bare knuckle boxer for the moment.
Digital Heroin
Here it is a week after the week after I said things would be going along, and I've been swamped with work-related blockades and a sleep deficit that kicked my ass mid-week. I'm sailing, technically, but will be spending the time I have today pouring over concepts/apps and such.

For Avial: Since there seem to be few issues with a 6 Avail, that's what we'll adjust it to. It does put the damper on some things, but it doesn't make anything un-doable completely, and there will be in-game opportunities to snake better gear.

Answer to the restricted gear: No. In a low-level game restricted gear demarks a huge jump in what you can get, whereas in a regular avail game it just allows access to a few nice toys.

Unfortunately the initial deadline has passed, however, as pointed out earlier in the thread, there will possibly be a good heavy turnover of gang personnel, and if things go smooth, I may open up the game to a few more active participants. I can put you on the reserves if you like, and while things go, we can talk character/concept so that when the time comes you'll be able to jump right in.

The thing to keep in mind is that, save for the bigger boys, who you won't be encountering unless you get really brave real quick, everyone you encounter is going to be built under similar restrictions for avail. There will be chances to score better gear as well.
Panzergeist
So am I in? I posted before you made the cutoff, but I haven't heard anything from you.
Digital Heroin
The cutoff for new interest is over, the final cut, however, is not. Those of you who have given brief concepts, but no rough sheet, should post one asap.

@saint sithney, I like your number crunching, you wanna look over my character?

I don't really want to get too into a meta-game optimization thing, but...

Something to remember for your character is that he's a gang member. Because of that, certain augmentations aren't really out of line. Maybe after he got jumped in, he decided he needed a little juice, so he got the local doc to fit him with a set of synth muscles. Muscle Replacement is very common among gangers, and +1 str +1 agl for 5,000¥ is boss. It would also give you more wiggle room in your stats.

Also, bp specializations are a bit pricey for a low-end game. Unless you've got a dire need for those dice, or your first few karma are spoken for, it's almost always better to just spend the 2 karma after the game starts.

Also, like I said to Aria, you can use a melee skill for close-range defense, (for example your Unarmed Combat skill can sub for Dodge in the form of Blocking,) and then take Gymnastics for the Gymnastics Dodge at ranged. That sort of cross-appropriation of skills helps you keep versatile. Also, 10,000¥ for even lvl 1 Synthcardium helps with Gymnastics Dodge as well as all other athletics tests. Hell, Synthcardium is probably the most critical ware a guy can get imo. 2BP and 0.1 Essence for +1 to an entire skill group. Hard to argue with that.
Red-ROM
@ Saint Sithney:thanks for the input man. I know that specializations are a waste at char-gen, but with the skills capped at 4, I kinda wanted the boost. gymnastics is a great idea, but I don't see this guy doing cartwheels and flips. I'd only be using it for dodge, and it wouldn't work if I was in a car or a hallway. I'm gonna look into the cyber. It's totally in line with the character, and maybe I could free up some points from attributes... the whole concept is circling the drain right now at availability 6. His primary weapons are all gone, and the whole focus of this guy was to use drugs as weapons/tools. I got some thinkin to do.
Combat Mage
I think drugs will be relatively easy to come by in the game seeing that we are playing gangers and drugs are big on the streets. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

The Slab thing isn't out of line and it's really effective (and expensive,) even if it requires you to wait a CT for the drugs to kick in. It's confusing that a drug which causes a state of simulated death is easier to get your hands on than a tranquilizer... Maybe DH can save your concept through fiat..

Also, on the cyber front, don't forget that 3BP worth of ¥ can get you Tailored Pheromones 1. That's some ware which fits your guy very well.
Digital Heroin
Those that make the first cut will have some nudge room coming their way. Yesterday was a fuck, work-wise... but I'm back on things.
Saint Sithney
Good to hear things are calming down for you DH.

In celebration I drawed a picture.

I'm taking my name out of the running for a place in the thread.
Digital Heroin
Ok, what follows is the list of people that I want to hear more from/work with on the final development of the game. This is the first cut, and anyone not in the list who wants can be put onto the reserve list. There will be turnover, no doubt, so if you are not on the list, PM me and I'll put you in reserves.

It took a bit of wracking my brain to think how to put this at manageable levels, and finally I decided to just go with the name the gang had by default, and keep a dozen. The three names not listed are the three guys I know RL. Questions, comments, concerns, and death threats can be PMed to me directly.

Here goes the list, in order of no specific order:

Red-ROM: Micky, the social infiltrator;
Chance359: Ortega, Aztech Bloodsports Orc muscle;
Combat Mage: Feral, the kid mage;
Aria: Scratch, the Invisible Path Adept;
kanislatrans: Matto, Mowhawked Orc Muscle;
St. Sithney: Còsimo, Muscle w. Social Graces;
Propaganda: ???, Army brat courier;
Branmac: Bear, Counterspelling Adept; and
Blackhat: Grim, Gangland medic.

As it might be evident, there are a lot of mixed backgrounds involved, some former gangers, some fairly priviledged (by Loveland standards). That all ties in with the gang's history, and the former leader's philosophy, which will be detailed more soonish on another thread. The gang is a turf gang, though one that is primarily comprised of misfits and outcasts, a place where people from all over can come together to live in the cracks left by the other gangs/syndicates, and to survive. For now, I would like to see from the above the current sheet you've got going, along with a bio that would have you a part of the Dozen for at least six months.

As I get them, I will be PMing questions, and will be opening dialogue with each of you on wiggle room for the avail cap, and other concerns you might have to realize your characters as you see them, but in a way which fits the grit I'm looking for.
Digital Heroin
And just as I post, I spy someone out of the running.... I'll need to meditate on a replacement, but for now I need to get to work.
Fenris
I'd love to toss myself in for a spot, I've always loved your games and it looks like you've got an opening. If you've got someone in mind already, I'd love to grab a reserve spot.

Sorry for not posting for a while, life got in the way and there were some things I had to take care of, so I've not really had the time for much else recently.

Thankfully, things have now been resolved, more or less, so I've got the time again. Anyway, I'll have the character and such finished soon. Also, I'm playing a gunbunny.
Saint Sithney
Should we get a pregame OOC thread going specifically to hammer out the gang-related stuff?

We've got to hammer out a whole lot of details such as:
What rackets do we run? Moral or exploitative?
What sort of structure does the gang use? How are we organized? How do we make decisions in the absence of leadership? What is everyone's role within the gang?
Where are we going with this thing? Are we looking to get aggressive? Who are we interested in aligning with if anyone?

All our characters are supposed to have at least 6 months of history together, so let's build some history.
Digital Heroin
I'm alive, folks, and intend to keep it that way, and to keep this game that way. Just got... busy. Work and such, but I've been behind the scenes working, and I'm reading/note-taking. So no worries need be had. As for an OOC thread, I want to avoid that just yet, to keep it de-cluttered when the time comes. I have the longer history of the area written up, and will be putting it in a Game Info thread, as I tend to keep, more than likely today. The thread will be updated to reflect current and evolving information of note, things that are important enough to be in a thread that is devoid of anything but that info.

When I get that up, it should give you guys a nice starting point for shared history, and to flesh out your individual niches. I'll be dictating the 'how it was' for the gang, and some of the income streams run by NPCs, but anything in the past six months is open to shaping/collaboration.

Aren't pretty much all rackets morally debatable to some extent?

Sure, running a gambling parlor allows chumps to throw away their money and ruin their own life.

Kidnapping girls and selling them into sexual slavery or for blood magic rituals, well, there's a bit less debate as to where that lies, morally.

The latter activity has become a regular source of income for the more desperate Seoulpa Rings in the wake of the Tempo bust. It's always been a common Vory thing though..

BTW, How about some mood music?

From an IC personal point of view, that second would be problematic. My guy is pretty sure he has lost family to that. Mind you, it is cooler to believe that than a hungry ghoul got lucky. smile.gif
Combat Mage
I'd prefer if we don't go quite that evil. Forced prostitution and other really dark stuff is fine to encounter ingame as a reminder that street life is ugly but I wouldn't want my character do do it.wink.gif
There's enough fun to be had with gambling, stealing, blackmailing and beating other gangs up.
Aria
...and we are a small gang, anything too obnoxious and we'd get stomped. Small time hoods suits Scratch better than hardened psychos... we are probably more about self defense and protecting our turf from bigger gangs, with perhaps some creative chemistry thrown in to spice up the mix...

Yeah, my main point in including that fact is that it's something to consider when dealing with the neighbors. Bad people abound. And, it being Loveland and all, we're in a place for that. We could get to cleaning them out, and, in doing so, appeal to the more civilized syndicates out there, like the Mafia or the Yaks. Generally, the sort of gangs that are desperate enough to pull rackets like kidnapping and forced prostitution are the smaller ones... though probably bigger than us. Bigger, but not better biggrin.gif

So, I'm feeling a strong vibe of protection rackets here. That's good, and it makes fine sense with the scenario as I understand it. Most of us have a "banding together for protection" clause in the bio.

Loveland likely runs on taking soldier's pay. Gambling, drink, and cathouses are the staple there. Nothing that'll get a guy into too much trouble. We'd be the street-side security for those types of establishments. That's got to be the steadiest form of income we'll see.

What about the trade in black market goods? Are we planning on doing a distribution thing or an escort thing? Do we control the action, or do we just take a piece of it in return for not shooting their dealers dead? Will we run guns, but not chips? Chips, but not drugs? Drugs, but not organs? Organs, but not stolen organs?

I'm willing to defer to whatever you guys are happiest with, but whatever we end up doing, I want to try and be expansive. Taking turf is more fun than protecting it. wobble.gif
Combat Mage
I think at first we should solidify our turf. As soon as everything is stable we can start expanding. So I'd say take a cut of the dealers at the start and later we try to get up our own supply and distribution lines.
As for what we trade, I'm up for anything but organs. Harvesting bodies is again a bit too dark.
BlackHat
What if they're not using them anymore? biggrin.gif Then its like recycling, and recycling is good.

Go green. Support your local Barrens Street Doc.

Ok, the info thread will be going up soon, which will have some more about the area you are in, as well as a few bits about notable residents that are either gang-affiliated, or just people of note.

As for rackets that I'm already writing in, ones Bruno (the incarcerated man) had a hand in: there is a chop shop that is gang-run/managed, with the former major client being a Yakuza-type who has been awful quiet of late. This is primarily operated by the three quiet ones, the guys I sail with. There are also two legit businesses in the very small neighborhood, one of which has a manager who sells drugs out of the back.

As for forced anything/kidnapping/dark shit... anyone who Bruno caught doing that on his turf was not dealt with by the gang, but by him personally. He's a quiet soul, but he's been known to rip people's limbs near off.
Digital Heroin
Alright folks, as you might have seen, the info thread is up now: http://forums.dumpshock.com/index.php?show...mp;#entry946738

I ask that, as it asks at the top of the thread, no one respond on that thread, and instead address their questions here for now. Tomorrow I will start sending out character approvals/questions and the like via PM, and by the weekend there will be a good idea set on when we are kicking into gear and rolling out the start of the game. Once we start, an OOC thread will be made to take over clean from this thread, and we'll be golden like a gun.

I was scanning back through the thread and realized I never put Bear's stuff up for people to look at. For anyone who cares to look, here it is.

What is the timeframe in relation to the LS -> KE shakeup?

Are we weeks, months or days after Bruno got scooped?
Do the neighboring gangs know he's locked up?
Are we still in communication with him?
Digital Heroin
Quick and dirty answers, which will be expanded upon in the next info update, which will be a bio on Bruno, and include details of his arrest.

Time-wise it is February 2072, KE has taken over full control of the key districts, but LS still has a presence, as KE is taking its sweet time getting around to manning the less visible/desirable ones. Loveland is currently in the process of a precinct change-out, with both KE and LS personnel present.

Bruno got scooped in early January, and the interesting thing is that witnesses will say all manner of things about who arrested him, from bounty hunters, to Lone Star, Knight Errant, and even the UCAS FBI.

The event was big, and there are rumors going around, but the only gang that the Dozen was on truly friendly terms was the Brothers of Steel. They know, but it is hard to get a read on just what the other gangs know, or has been to this point.

Bruno did not just get arrested, he got dissapeared. There has been zero contact from him, and anyone making inquiries has been met with a 'Richard who?' (Yes, he has a SIN, and the gang does know his name is Richard Hawkins. For all intents and purposes, Bruno seems to have been sucked into a black hole.
Digital Heroin
So, today kicked me in the ass, but I spent a good part of the evening re-reading sheets and bios, and I actually have no issues with anyone's character. In fact, I'm quite happy as it stands with all that have posted after the call for re-posted sheets and such. So here's the deal. We're go. The guys from RL will be playing on the boards, but they may have a bit of a staggered start. I will be posting up some more information tomorrow night, and then start up with writing the opener. That means, if all goes according to plan, that by Monday we will be green-light, and go.

If I seem slow to post, I offer no excuses, but an explanation: ship-wide server/workstation replacement. Stress, stress, and a whole lot of wanting to punch officers.
Branmac
Couple of questions. The Brothers of Metal (great name!), The Black Adder Society and the Southside Assassins. What do we know about their sizes, strengths, and current areas of business?
Digital Heroin
Nearby gang info added. NPC bios/near history to follow. Expect an OOC/IC thread to crop up in the next few days, and then we're off.
Combat Mage
I'll be out of town for thursday and friday without internet access. Just telling in case the OOC/IC threads go up while I'm away.
Digital Heroin
Saint, you're killing me, eh. Good question, just wrong board. I'm trying to keep the info thread stricly info so it's easy to refer to.

QUOTE (Saint Sithney @ Jun 30 2010, 10:46 AM) *
When Bruno negotiated the DMZ of the mersh zone, did he set up any official channels for conflict resolution?

In other words, are The Dozen sanctioned to take actions against anyone who breaks the peace?

The only official channel was comms between the leaders of the four gangs, with Bruno being the holder of the commcodes. Very unfortunate for the Dozen.

As far as sanctioned action, the treaties were treaties more in name. If someone commits a transgression, it was brought up through comms to all leaders, and the gang whose turf was trod on was given reign to respond as they saw fit. Too heavy handed a response and the others might frown on it, but such is life in Loveland.

Keep in mind, there are other gangs around that have no respect for, or inclusion in, the treaties. The Dozen simply have a buffer zone with the three higher teir gangs around them.

Combat: No worries. It's a long weekend coming up, and I'm on the first leg of a road trip. I should have access, but I'm not going to punish people for RL commitment.
