Full Version: Music to Run by
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
Inpu
I often find inspiration in music and have heard at least one Run involving everyone's favorite painted Immortal Elf, Harlequin, uses music to set the mood. The setting is rife with music, accentuating its importance with the first cyberware and with characters such as Maria Mercurial.

What sort of music do the GMs of the community listen to when they want ideas? Or that they link to particular scenes?

One example that springs to mind is Deus. I always end up thinking of how it must have been like during the second Crash while listening to the opening theme of Ghost In the Shell Innocence. Small break downs and issues leading up to the build in the music, which is accompanied by the image of those opposing the great tree avatar of Deus in an Ultra Violet server.

We tend to play kind of a mix between street savy characters and pink mohawks...and we all like Metal...so....Manowar, Necromancer, maybe some other stuff... and I'm definitely a fan of AC/DC so some of that works too...

I don't exactly get inspiration from the songs, but sometimes when I'm listening to them, previous runs start popping up in my head...
Yerameyahu
Back in the day, it was always the Fight Club soundtrack. Ah, memories.
The Shuhite
Maybe it's just because that's what I was listening to while first reading the Shadowrun books, but Analord by AFX(Aphex Twin) always makes me think of SR while listening to it.

for street:
I like using Old School Gangsta Rap.
NWA, Tupac, Public Enemy, Anthraxx, Cypress Hill, Dr Dre..

For Megacorp stuff:
NiN, Rage against the Machine, Pink Floydd

Ghost in the Shell Innocence OST has a lot of good moody tracks,
so do Aeon Flux OST and Crying Freeman OST.

Some tracks from the Braveheart and Jurassic Park OST are also quite usable.

One thing that my players really enjoyed were three tracks from the game system shock 2.

One already scary for normal scenes, one track for especially thrilling moments and one for action scenes.

I looked them up and they seem rather good for the futuristic aspect.
Squiddy Attack
A friend of mine found this, and we both think it's very Shadowrunny.
Acme
It's short, but I've found that Arco Arena by Cake gives me a Shadowrun vibe.
Blastula
The Psalm 69 album by Ministry for me. NWO and Just One Fix have always been great moodsetters. Jesus Built My HotRod is great for chase scenes.
Squiddy Attack
This makes me think cybercombat for some reason.

The aforementioned friend also likes this one for car chases.

Last time one of these music threads came around, I compiled a quick Shadowrun playlist for my group.

One game I ran featured a prominent band with a troll lead-singer - totally stole the idea when I heard a throat-singing band on the radio

Yat-kha, Albert Kuvezin Tuvan throat singing punk band

Another vote for the GITS 1 & 2 soundtracks

Nothing is simultaneously as atmospheric and claustrophobic as Venetian Snares
People have actually been charting some of Arron Funk's compositions for Rockband.

It's pretty funny.

Frictional Nevada
Szamár Madár is extremely undercharted, but actually playable.
Epidermis also undercharted, but remains basically unplayable.

Weaponized jazz FTW.
The Dragon Girl
Not a GM but this is what I listen to while I'm 'running http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=1748EA10ACF8118D

I saw this music video in Youtube. Fever Ray: when i grow up.
Urban Shaman summoning Water Spirit.. so accurate it is freaky.. wobble.gif

I find both the doom 1 & 2 remix projects each have a handful songs that are great to run to.

Doom 1 Remix: Dark Side of Phobos

Doom 2 remix: Delta Q Delta

Since a couple of people mentioned Ghost In The Shell-Stand Alone Complex, I have a question (If you can't answer it, no need to reply; if you do, PM me. Flames, jokes and "I don't know"'s will be deleted)

I had a whole list of stuff at one point, albeit that computer died. Tended towards a great deal of punk rock and gangsta rap, with some exceptions; I remember Social Distortion, the Casualties and 2Pac all playing significant roles. Lately a lot of old video game music's come into the picture, such as the Lava Reef Zone music from Sonic and Knuckles, which pretty much radiates a future megacity feel.

While in the Corporate Enclaves...

Muzak.
yesferatu
We generally have an EBM/Industrial soundtrack, anything made by machines (cause they don't make mistakes).
I do have a Devil Rats Theme.
I also like to throw some Snog at anything with a corporate backdrop.
Squiddy Attack
This one.

"Crime pays, and then you die". Shadowrun much?
Redcrow
I recently picked up the soundtrack for Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day and it has some good tracks suitable for SR mood music.
Neurosis
Summarily reviving this thread (if that's okay) because I'm very interested in this topic.

And all the new music I've been introduced to so far is pretty awesome.
Doc Byte
Welle Erdball comes to my mind, however, their songs are not in English.

I do like the soundtrack of the very first C&C, too.

When facing Shedim... The William Shatner Compilation Album.

I think the video for Run This Town is perfect for Shadowrun myself.

Actually, the band Neurosis is a favorite of mine for atmospheric Goblin Rock or Tribal WizRock sounds.

This always makes me think of Shadowrun. As does this, and for some reason, this.

(Also, hi Dumpshock.)

When cutting a deal with a dragon, what better music is there but "DragonForce"?

Last time this came up someone suggested "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" by Cage the Elephant. This later became my campaign's theme song.

Yeah, Bizarrely the music in my head when my group play is "Here It Goes Again" by Ok Go.

Kinda works. The run is usually fast and frenetic and runners are insane. wobble.gif

Well that's an interesting coincidence, I was not even aware of this band. (My username refers to the uh, Shadowrun character of that (and many other) name(s).

Welp, I immediately feel less original as I did the same exact thing. : )

Dragonforce is really much more D&D than SR....and only then even if your D&D game is very...exuberantly typical? For lack of a better phrase.

Yeah, that's become a popular one since Borderlands. Or, you know, the eleventy-billionth time you hear it on the radio.

Still, a good song.

I was working on a Rock 'n' Roll mage in the WoW Pencil and Paper RPG. But problems happened with the group shortly after I was able to create the "Bloodrocution" spell.

Ooooooooooooooo! DETHKLOK!

Still a good SHADOWRUN song, too. : )

Their sound and subject matter are very SR for me. Also, they basically invented the post-metal doom genre.

For example, Lost
[ Spoiler ]

If that's not some Awakened Trog rock, I don't know what is.

Little trivia: the same Sheltering Sky quote from the beginning of the track was used by Brandon Lee on his wedding invitations (morbid even before The Crow, eh?) and later on his grave stone.

Oh, as for another pop-ier suggestion, I have to pimp Astronautalis again. Astronautalis is the shit. That he's not famous is proof enough that the American music scene is broken.

The "Sons of Anarchy" soundtrack.

J-pop and ocuntry western works for me, though for a safe corp facility- like a corp run mall or living facility- there's british pop like "Girls aloud" that seems to set the pace well.

Looking at LastFM, I had the idea of a shadowrun tag music station:

Anyone up and willing to work on this?

I like a good mix of classic goth, darkwave, punk, and industrial, depending on what's going on. All very anti-establishment in their own ways.
