Goodness. They don't ask for much, do they?

Thunderbirds with fusion engines and mufflers. The requirements don't fit the math - you need a lot of thrust to get away with what they want, and that's going to draw a lot of power or fuel.

iirc a recent NASA project found that by placing jet engines on top of the wing rather then under it, they could increase the lift generated by the wings. This thanks to the jet engines reducing the pressure on the top surface of the wing even further then what the shape of the wing alone could provide.

Small luxury jets have had their engines above the wing for years - it may solve the thrust issue, but it won't solve the economy/noise one.

We're also talking about >100 mile hops, here. They want to link rural areas to major airports, like Lake Tahoe to Reno/Sacramento.

All right. Looking at it, it works on the noise issue but I think you and I are talking about a project on a scale that the regional airport doesn't need.
