Ok, so a little confused on how astral combat works for dual natured being. What attributes / skills do you use for astral combat if you are not astrally projecting? I read on an old topic here that they use unarmed and physical attributes if they are fighting in the astral plane (but not projecting) with makes no sense as reading on the topic states you use your mental attributes instead.

If possible could someone direct me to a reference for this if it's true? Dual natured seems to be a pretty vague topic in shadowrun.

Astral Perceiving Dual-Natured Characters can use either their Unarmed and Physicals, or theor Astral Combat and Mental Equivalencies. Astral Projecting Characters use Astral Combat and Mental Equivalencies. IIRC, of Course. Its been a hell of a day... wobble.gif

So if a dual natured creature is fighting a spirit (who exists only on the astral plane) he can use his physical attributes and unarmed skill to punch the spirit? Interesting...

Anyone have a page number / book this is referenced in? My GM won't believe me otherwise.

Here you go... OOOOps, looks like the wrong information from what I remember. Well, there you go. Guess I was wrong... Though I do remember Dual natured creatures being able to use their Physical on Astral Forms. *shrug*

Astral Combat
Astral combat is resolved in the same way as physical combat. Astrally perceiving and dual-natured characters use their Physical attributes and skills to fight opponents with a physical body, and their Astral Combat + Willpower to fight wholly astral entities. Astrally projecting characters use their Mental attributes in place of Physical ones (see the Astral Attributes Table, above) along with the Astral Combat skill. There are no known ranged weapons that function in astral space, so unarmed attacks, active weapon foci (p. 199), and mana spells are the only options for astral combat.
Most astral combat damage is based on the character’s astral strength (Charisma), as noted on the Astral Combat table. Damage
inflicted from astral combat attacks can be either Stun or Physical (attacker’s choice). Astral objects like barriers can only be affected by
Physical damage.

Yeah, you know... i always thought so too. But i just checked again. (Tymeaus just provided the section too)... and... looks like i did it wrong. To fight wholely astral dudes trying to shoot you with mana spells and shit... you NEED to have good cha, will and astral combat skill. Hm. Interesting.

Also i... i did it WRONG. BUT, BUT I NEVER make mistakes, that's unpossible *G*.

You can find the information you seek in Natural Weapons as one of the powers for critters, there it says a dual natured critter may use its natural weapons to hit another astral critter.

QUOTE (Running Wild @ p. 205)
Astral Combat
When dual-natured critters engage astral forms in combat, they must use astral combat. Visually, it can appear that the critter is fighting invisible assailants, or the beast can grow eerily still as it thrusts its mind into the attacker. Presuming the critter does not have powers or spells to use on the astral, it engages with tooth, claw, and mind.
After Initiative is rolled, the dual-natured creature will attack on its action. Attacks are made using Willpower + Astral Combat. Damage can either be the physical damage that the critter would normally do with an unarmed attack or Charisma ÷ 2 (round up). Venom, disease, or other physical accompaniments to the critter’s attacks are not used in astral combat.
Purely astral beings are capable of using the heightened speed available on the astral plane to break combat, though moving at the speed of thought is not viable in astral combat. The astral presence of the dual-natured individual is able to block an astral form, the same way that a physical body stops a physical person.

QUOTE (4A 296, Natural Weapon power)
If the critter is Dual Natured, Natural Weapon may be used with the normal Unarmed Combat skill and Physical Damage Value to perform attacks against astral opponents( within reach).

I KNEW it was some where... Thanks BishopMcQ and Udoshi... wobble.gif
At least now I know I am not going crazy...

Also remember that a dual-natured shapeshifter's astral form always looks like his animal form, so he'll have access to his astral natural weapon even when his physical form looks human. That's helped our group's shifter a few times, though it might not apply for the original question.

Then again, if they're astral, you're not, and they have mana spells then you'll only ever touch them if the GM is feeling nice. Even if you can fly, you can't catch a flying astral form.

That also makes the character vulnerable to parazoologist bounty-hunter trophy collector reagent harvester types. Take a dose of magical seaweed and you can immediately tell who in the room is a shifter.

If you simply go somewhere which blocks LoS their ranged attacks are useless. Step into a cupboard, close the door, and ready an action to attack anything astral that comes into the cupboard. Out in the open, carry an umbrella.

I saw the words 'astral' and 'combat' why is there no argument yet?

I'm not sure you're right about the shifters always having their natural weapons on the astral, James McMurray, but I certainly don't care enough to fight it. biggrin.gif
Udoshi
Spirits are critters that regularly have Natural Weapons available to them, too. Not just shifters.

My reasoning is that their astral form always matches their animal form. If the astral form has big nasty teeth at all times, it should be able to use those big nasty teeth in astral combat at all times.

I can see arguments either way, but the power gamer who took jaguar-shifter to be super awesome has been screwed by it so often that even if someone official were to come and say that's not how it works, I'd still let him do it. It's not like he can ever be a part of an astral combat unless his opponent decides to let him.

Spirits are different, Udoshi. smile.gif
