Full Version: Microwire : miscellaneous use
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
Minimax le Rouge
hello
microwires are found in the grapple gun section, (SR4A p337).

his seems to be almost as sharp as the monofilament, while being much cheaper. (8P with no AP).

Do you think we could make garrotes, whips, and other same uses of the monofilament with this?
Medicineman
Shure, why not ?
some of my Chars already use them in this fashion

Hough !

You can make garottes, whips, etc out of pretty much anything strand-like. Try duct tape, or even just ordinary rope. *gasp*

Just it should have damage codes adjusted accordingly. Don't go treating a microwire whip as a monofilament one.
The Jopp

Slicer Bomb
Cheap Commlink
Explosive of Choice
Microwire

Attach commlink to a piece of explosive, roll the microwire around the package. Place charge in path of opposition.

Tripslice
Laser Rangefinder
Explosive of Choice
Microwire

Attach rangefinder to explosive, attach microwire so that you have a directional explosion. Place charge hidden from view where the opposition will cross the beam.

I still dunno if I believe the mono-grenade works (and what goes for mono, goes for micro).
Minimax le Rouge
I don't believe in mono-grenades too.
Financially, it's and endless pit: Just buy one, open it, remove the hundreds of meters of monowire, and sell it.

Other strange crossover i imagined :
a Kusarigama with a myomeric/ monowire/ microwire rope.
A myomeric rope garrote. (does it goes around the neck of the victim even easier?)

what do you think about the dammage code of this weapons ?
microwire garrote, microwire whip ...

No need for the commlink, the standard detonators from the core book are already wireless-enabled wink.gif

@Minimax: Same answer as the last gazillion times this was brought up, what tells you the monowire inside the grenade is the same kind as the one used for fences?
Yerameyahu
There's one kind. But my point is more, 'does this even work, damage-wise?'

Realistically, I could see some problems in giving such a thin and light piece of wire enough oomph to actually harm someone...but rule of cool says "why not?". Assuming it just works does not break or complicate anything, neither does assuming that the monowire inside is a different kind of monowire wink.gif

I'm certainly one of the last people to engage in apologetics for _that book_, but that particular piece IMO is nothing worth worrying about.

I just read the description in WAR:
QUOTE
Rather that a fragmenting shell, however,
it is built with hundreds of meters of monofilament wound
around the exploding core, lashing out in several pieces and all
directions on detonation.

Damages, AP, and Availability are streamlined with other mono wired item, so i assumed it was a similar kind of wire.
Yerameyahu
I guess. I usually think the 'Rule of Cool' is stupid, and shouldn't ever justify imbalance. So the question is whether they're imbalanced. If not, no problem.

What about using a grenade sized device with a spool of mono/microwire. Small explosive or hell compressed CO2 forces the wires to shoot out 3 meters in a series of directions. When the wires are released, they each bring a small tag with adhesive.

It's primary purpose is for area denial, runners drop it behind them as they run down a hallway and it creates a web that pursuit will need to cut through or be cut to ribbons.
Yerameyahu
I like it. Instant tripwires.

Similar sure, but there are quite a few applications using ultra-thing wire in SR: Monofilament whips, monofilament swords (for a puny 750 ¥), microwire, and the monowire from Arsenal. So assuming that the grenade contains something else than the 1000 ¥/m wire from Arsenal is hardly a stretch
Dakka Dakka
.o0(hmm microwire/monofilament/traditional wire bola with grenades as weights...)

See. THAT makes sense as a monowire grenade under the Rule of Cool. A grenade that uses monowire as its flechettes does not.

Under that guise I'd say that anyone in the blast area is unharmed, although possibly tangled in monowire.
