Full Version: Smartlink camera Enhancements question
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
Phatpug
One of my players want to enhance the camera on his smartlink equipped gun. The problem we are running into is that while the book says in the smartlink description that you can enhance the camera, it doesn't say how many enhancements it can take or even the device rating of the smartlink.

For the detail oriented its an internal smartlink. Any advice or even a page number where this information is would be awesome.

Thank you
Yerameyahu
As you say, there is not a RAW answer (AFAIK. Even in Arsenal.).

I'd just let him pay for whatever he wants. If necessary, you can say he has to replace the camera with a Camera of appropriate Rating.

I TOTALLY WANT THAT GUN. Alas, the company that made it, Arcadia Machine and Tool (yes, the AMT Hardballer in the Hitman games was an actual gun, not something Io made up), went out of business years ago due to pretty bad quality control problems and nobody else makes a long-barreled M1911 clone. frown.gif

No one?

It took Canadians to improve the 1911. I'm still amazed at that. nyahnyah.gif

Really? What you call improvement, I call Sacrilege smile.gif.

High capacity double-stacked magazines with some improved technology that wasn't available in John Browning's day? Match-grade barrels? What's wrong with that?

If you need a High Capacity, Double Stacked magazine... errr, Oh Wait, you're Canadian, you just might... smile.gif
I truly prefer the original. It has always worked for me.
As for improved materials and match grade barrels, though nice, they just add extra costs that I do not necessarily want to pay out.

Now, if someone were to GIVE me one, well, then I would be all up for that.

I'm Canadian, I can't own one of these. frown.gif As for High Capacity, Double-Stacked Magazines... Well, sometimes you're facing more than 8 opponents, just sayin'.

Sadly... I can only Sympathize... frown.gif

If I am facing 8+ opponents and all I have is a M1911, I am likely running rather than deciding to shoot it out with them. Of course, once one or two of them go down, that generally is a disincentive for the rest of them to follow me...

I'd say that a Smartlink being restricted is a security device and assign it a device rating of 3. Thus the built-in camera is rating 3 and can accecpt 3 (1-slot) enhancements. If your player wants more enhancements than that (s)he needs to also upgrade the camera.

Security Devices are usually rated 4.

Unless they have the Obsolescent trait.

Oops. Okay Rating 4, all the rest still applies. smile.gif
Phatpug
I'm planning on counting it as a security device, so rating 4, but I also feel that it would be small. mini camera sized, should that limit its capacity. I know micro cameras only have one slot available. should a mini only have 2, or maybe 1/2 the device rating?

Camera Upgrade (Smartguns Only): This modification upgrades the guncam with vision enhancement systems (p. 333, SR4A). It can be taken more than once, each time adding a new vision enhancement system.

The upgrade takes 1 slot, which to me indicates that the limit to the number of enhancements is how many slots you have remaining in your gun.
Yerameyahu
There it is! I seriously opened Arsenal and skimmed the whole weapon mod section looking for that before I posted. frown.gif Thanks suoq.

Now, I don't think it's a *good* mod, but it's the RAW.

Actually, this from Arsenal...

Smart or Not?
A standard weapon is considered a “dumb” device with no Device rating and no wireless connection, so it cannot interact with the Matrix nor can it be manipulated through it. This is the case for most melee and thrown weapons. Many 2070-era firearms, however, are equipped with a smartgun system, either off-the-rack, as an internal or external firearm accessory, or as a weapon modification. These weapons are considered smart weapons with a Device rating of 3 and a wireless connection, as well as the basic equipment that comes with a smart system (laser range finder, small camera, sensors to keep track of heat buildup and ammunition, an automatic gun mode switch, and clip ejection).

Page 222 SR4A has a table of typical device ratings.

Zoot, I never said that the Smartlink should be a Device Rating of 4. I said that Security Devices are usually rated 4, and Military are 5+. DMiller indicated that he considered it a Security Device, so I pointed out the difference in Ratings to help clarify things. If he considers it a Security Device, it woud likely have a Rating of 4 in his version of Shadowrun.

No worries, though.

Yeah sure, but it took Wilson to perfect it.

Seriously though whether to go double stack or not is matter of comfort. While I don't mind double stacks in most guns, on a 1911 frame it just does not work for me. The regular frame feels better, allows for a more comfortable grip, and while firing everything else just seems to click better. I won't go into my first firing experience with one, or even the first time I held one, but I can assure you that it was superior in every way to any other firearm I have fired.
