I'm getting ready to run a (probably short-term) game for some friends. I wanted to add some color to their running experience (they're starting in Puyallup), so I thought to myself: why not give them an incentive to live in the same place? Or at least, someplace that I have defined?

So I cranked up a couple of tenement-type places using the advanced Lifestyle rules. I thought maybe these could be of use to other GMs, so I'm posting them here. Please note that according to the rules, Frank's Flophouse should cost 1,100 nuyen.gif per month, but I rounded it down to 1,000 to make it a little more attractive.

Frank's Flophouse (Carbonado)
Located in the predominantly-ork neighborhood of Carbonado, Frank's is a sturdy brick apartment hotel that has been stained an oily black by decades of volcanic ash and smog. The building is 12 floors, but only the bottom 8 are for rent; the upper floors were gutted by a large fire in the mid-60's. A patch of dry dirt out front covered with dessicated vines is all that remains of someone's attempt at gardening here.

Frank's is run by a family of orks, all of whom share the responsibilities of superintendent, and who live in a secured bunker in the sub-basement. Whoever is on duty wears an old, grease-stained work short bearing a patch that reads "Frank". The shirt belongs to the original Frank, who is still alive and tends to work weekday graveyard shifts. He oldest son (Frank Jr.) and daughter (Frankie) do most of the repair work, but they have a dozen or so siblings and cousins that live on-site and pitch in. The lobby of the building has a cramped bar/convenience store set up. The prices are a bit above average, but you can get basic necessities without having to go outside.

The building is relatively well-secured; most of the windows are boarded up and Frank's family is well-armed and do not take kindly to anyone causing trouble around the flophouse. The tenants themselves are also very protective of the place; most gangs will not pursue a target beyond the lobby doors.

The place is old, however, and things tend to break. Electricity is not a constant in most parts of Puyallup, but the orks have scrounced some solar panels and set them up on the roof; this means that electricity isn't dependent on the local power corp, but it also means that there isn't a lot of spare power, and sometimes the power is spotty. Various other problems (bad pipes, etc.) also crop up from time to time.

This is roughly the equivalent of a Low Lifestyle, with somewhat better security and occasionally iffy utilities. 1,000 nuyen/month.

Tuartheil Hostel (Tarislar)

This is one of many hostels in Tarislar. It is a step above the squats and tent cities that many of the Tir refugees are living in, but you wouldn't mistake it for a real apartment. The hostel is well-furnished, thanks to the work of several iteinerant elven carpenters and artisans. Many of the residents passing through have made improvements to the hostel, which currently enjoys greater matrix connectivity than most of the Tarislar district. The hostel is crowded, and the inhabitants are highly suspicious of outsiders, doubly so for non-elves.

The hostel itself consists of several 1-story shelters that look like they were recently built from scrap metal and wood. Each cottage houses several people, who share the living space and are required to attend "house meetings" weekly to discuss the business of the house (roommate grievances, repairs, etc.) Because of the ever-shifting population in the hostel, a long-term resident could easily arrive home to find an unfamiliar roommate. All residents are checked for weapons at the "gates" of the compound. The gates are constructed from 12-foot high stacks of junked automobiles an other heavy salvage. The hostel is protected by a second-string elven go-gang called The Riven. Their clubhouse is located on the hostel grounds; residents are not allowed within 15 feet of it.
