Full Version: Positive Reputation Quality
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
The Jake
Is there a quality which grants the player extra Street Rep at chargen? Basically a way to say "this person is known on the streets and very reliable".

If not, how would you build it?

- J.
Makki
Reputation, no. Notoriety, yes.

QUOTE
Each character starts off with a Notoriety of 0—people have a
neutral opinion of her. Modify this according to the following qualities
possessed by the character (plus one point per negative quality,
minus one point per positive quality):
Positive Qualities: Blandness, First Impression, Lucky
Negative Qualities: Addiction, Bad Luck, Combat Paralysis, Elf
Poser, Gremlins, Incompetent, Infirm, Ork Poser, Scorched, SINner
(criminal SIN only), Spirit Bane, Uncouth, Uneducated
The Jake
I am after a positive reinforcement of a given character's rep, not a negative. Something like 1 Street Rep per 5BP of the Quality purchased (max 4) or something.

But do Pornomancers really need four more dice at chargen?

Do you want those poor pornomancers to be stuck at fifty-something dice? rotfl.gif

@The Jake:
Your suggested quality seems balanced. There is precedent for qualities that give street cred (the Inspired quality), so the price is about right for making a runner who already has a bit of a reputation. It has always seemed a bit wonky to me, that the system lets you make characters with phenomenal abilities, but none of them start out with any kind of reputation. After all, a lot of them are far from being novices at their vocations.

Since there are Positive Qualities that affect Notoriety negatively, and there is no statement that Notoriety cannot go below zero, it would seem to be possible to have a negative Notoriety which, when subtracted from the Street Cred, would actually increase it. With all three listed Positive Qualities at chargen, it would seem to be possible to start out with a +3 modifier for Street Cred right at the start.

Of course, the three that are given really don't represent a decent selection. Blandness particularly doesn't seem suited to this application.

The Jake's idea has merit.

no they don't, but it isn't exactly relevant to this as a pornomancer doesn't have any quality points left anyway.

I saw a houserule/topic on dumpshock a while ago(years) that tried to take that rule Makki quoted and update it for street cred/notoriety and qualities in the RC. Since its relevant to the topic at hand, I'll see if i can find it.

Edit: Wow. dumpshock actually worked. Here you go

Also this but not as good.

My problem with trawling through each quality to determine what *might* be a positive modifier on Notoriety is that it is a very fuzzy mechanic. It's open to GM interpretation in too many ways.

I'm simply after a simply, clear mechanic which allows a PC at chargen to buy a certain degree of reputation. 4 Street Cred isn't a huge amount - but it is enough to get a decent level of respect out of chargen. Obviously one doesn't exist but I'm curious how it might look.

Thanks for the positive feedback on my suggestion. If there's no better alternative, I'll probably just use that.

It also imposes restrictions which largely render it unsuitable and fluff-wise unworkable for non-combatant characters.

Why? If you are non-combatant, you are not likely raising a ton of combat skills to start with (which is what the limitation deals with). Seems perfect to me, ESPECIALLY for a Non-Combatant Focus.

I guess I'd start with the social edges that are out there that are similar-stuff like Fame; maybe School of Hard Knocks; Privileged Family Name; Trustworthy; Liar; Records on File; Wanted; etc.... And see what they do, and how you think your "Edge" would work exactly, and compare and contrast.

Then after you get a solid idea of how it'd work, and what it'd cost I'd present it to your GM and explain why it'd be cool, and fun. Worst case scenario is the GM outright says no. Best case you get what you want.
