I never played SR4, but at least there you could build viable Ork, Troll and Dorf characters from what i read . .
In SR5 it seems to me that the intent is "Go Elf or Human or go home" . . And i really fucking dislike these!
Elves have no drawbacks at all in terms of race. No impeded Attributes, no being ugly and dumb, no real racism.
Humans just straight up get more Edge and skills and attribute points simply be being the cheapest race!
If you don't want skinny Orks and Trolls, then make it so that they actually have enough Points available to spend!
The Main Reason for skinny Orks, Trolls and Dorfs is that they basically took everything that made them viable in their roles and gave it to the elves or made it not work at all anymore.
Simply because most skills are linked to agility, charisma and logic. All Attributes where Elves get no malus or only bonus points in.
Exactly opposite of Orks and Trolls and Dorfs simply do not get any Bonus in either of them.
Tanking is a Thing of the Past, now dodging damage is strictly superior. Close Combat uses agility instead of Strength, because REASONS!
(them appearantly being WE DON'T WANT ORKS AND TROLLS AND DORFS TO BE STRONG CLOSE COMBAT CHARACTERS!)
As for the Skill for Hovercraft: Thank you people.

I feel Dwarves and Orks are still viable in most cases, while Trolls are niche choices. That being sad, the cost for being them is steeper than in 4th, especially since strength has few skills attached to it and close combat usually isn't a thing to dabble in, more of a full on investment.

Yes, you pay more for mostly useless Attributes . .
also:
There are no rules for shark shapeshifters are there?

Not really for 5th as far as PCs go, would have to dig through the old files about sharks in previous editions.
You also have to remember there is no hybrid form for shapeshifters in SR, it's just animal or humanoid form, unlike WW versions which do get the beastman combo mode.
Which does limit their usefulness quite a bit because a big shark flopping down the street is not necessarily an asset.

Well, there is the Way of the Beast Shark Adept who can select Beast Form (Shark; for his Totem) as an Enhancement/Metamagic. Kind of Dangerous, but there it is.

That is a good point, I was just thinking of pure born shifters, but that could give him some options.

Not unless you can breath atmosphere and have skimmers on your body to put you above the street. If so, then have at it.

A biological street shark would be hard, especially with SURGE nerfs, but with a combination of cyber and bioware you can get something kinda close. Get fangs from cyberware, grab gills from bioware, then just biosculpt until you look like some sort of monster.

Shifter with some addons should get you a street shark. not all shifter animals have to be dogs, foxes, cats, and such.

sitrep:
played SR5, found it to be as bad as expected, told the rest of the group to not bother calling me for the next game.
