Full Version: What did Horizon do?

I did not get the Horizon plot book but the new Clutch of Dargon Plot book mentions a conflict between Horizon and Technomancers. Can someone fill me in on what the goody goody Horizon corp did?
Critias
While ostensibly standing up for technomancer and AI rights, they were basically duping technos into working for them -- and if the technos tried not to, they were outright kidnapping/brainwashing them into service. It's covered in Twilight Horizon, over the space of a couple chapters, some plot hooks, all that fun stuff.

Gonna have to pick it up then as it kinda changes how Horizon is viewed.

Yeah, it caught me *extremely* flat-footed. Mrf.

The otehr downside is that, with Horizon smacking Technomancers and Evo experimenting on e-Ghosts, we're left with no friendly corps to take up the torch. MCT and Renraku are clearly out, NeoNET isn't much better, Wuxing ... nobody cares about Wuxing. So, who do they turn to?

Hmmm...
CanRay
"Friendly" and "Mega" are mutually exclusive terms.

Except for Wageslaves loving Aztechnology, and even they're wondering about things in Bogota.
MK Ultra
AIs should go to Saeder-Krupp, at least they cant be eaten - even though Lowhyr is kind of an info-vor wink.gif

There never were any "friendly megas". I was one of those that knew better when the Horizon PR machine was running full-blast. They're clearly supposed to be the Google of the 2070s. Google claims to have an active interest in avoiding evil actions, but they're lying to themselves with that nonsense. Corporations exist to make money, not advance humanity.

But yeah, big show down in Vegas.

They might even really have started out as a genuinely friendly corporation, but when they have to compete with the other ruthless corporations, and are responsible to shareholders and the like? Yeah, you can bet your ass they'll do whatever it takes (and have their top notch PR departments maintain their early Good Guy Horizon image)

*Looks at random bookie* "What are the odds?"

Without getting too much into spoilers, they actually do a good job of explaining the mentality shift. They explain how the Consensus works and (to quote the book) "In short, the
Consensus had shifted from 'Horizon tries to do what’s good for the world' to 'what’s good for Horizon is good for the world.'”

To be fair, it probably always was that way, they were just REALLY good as spinning it the first way.
