Full Version: Any recent Shadowrun book finds?
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun

Shadowrun novels and sourcebooks seem to be pretty rare in used book stores in these parts. So much to my surprise when in the past week I found the following:

Shadowrun: Nosferatu (novel)
Grimoire: Shadowrun Sourcebook: The Manual Of Practical Thaumaturgy 14th, 2050

Still can never seem to find a copy of 2XS in a store, but I'll keep hunting.

How about you guys -- any good finds lately? biggrin.gif

I can't even find a used book store in all of South Jersey. frown.gif

Buddy of mine orders his all off Amazon, for far less than a candy Bar in most cases. I think he just received about five of them, all for $0.01 + Shipping. So, A Nickel and Shipping, not too shabby. smile.gif

A lot of good deals on amazon but I hesitate on used stuff when I can't inspect it myself, and shipping is always $3.99. But I enjoy the hunt, myself.

Apparently the TRPG scene in California is worst off then I thought, since I could only find the one used bookstore that had ANYTHING.

And said used bookstore hasn't received any new stock in that section for quite some time. Feels like I've been buying up all of their stock.

Yeah one doesn't find too many used copies of SR novels/sourcebooks at the flea markets or used book shops as they tend to be retained by their owners around here.

Speaking of SR and used, has any here seen the original French version of the 1st/2nd ed SR main book?
Just like how the Germans were allowed some leeway in the printing/canoncity(?) I have heard the French version was so out there they basically thru canon out the window.

The setting is set in Paris which is not so odd, but then they rejuggle the Top 10 Corps, add new faces like another Villier child to the pack and other fun changes.

I see that one can get a French version of SR online now, but I do not know if this is still the original altered format or if the current stock is just a translated copy of regular SR. Wouldn't mind getting my paws on this altered form even if having to spend some time with a translator program to just see how zany it really was.

Any advice from someone who has seen this version is welcome. smile.gif

one of the last places I recall actually looking for books, there was about 50 older SR sourcebooks sitting on the shelves, if I had the money, I probably would have bought them up, but that was many many months ago.

The French SR main books were just translations, with no notable differences (as far as I know). I think you're referring to the "Shadowrun France" book, which was a French exclusive setting book about France in Shadowrun.
It didn't exactly throw the canon out the window, but it did have a few crazy ideas. Basically it suffered from the "let's put everything there's in the UCAS in France". So there were powerful people and corporation you wondered why you never heard before, there was a villain who was basically Darke 2.0, etc.
It also dated from the time when France had the Minitel in every home long before anybody had the internet, so France had a SOTA Matrix system (that IIRC survived the 29 Crash far better than the rest of the world)...

Ah... I had misunderstood which book it was then.

Do you know it's proper title so we can try hunting that up, may turn up on ebay or similar in the eu?

It was indeed "Shadowrun France"

"Shadowrun France"

And It's IMO the worst book ever written.

(but as english find it's the London Sorcebook, germans thinks it's SR Germany... I guess my opinion is tainted because I'm french and their ideas sucked so much).

Like Neostradamus... good luck with such an idocity...

Like Oligarchy....

Like... peasants (yes yes peasants but not modern farmers, like in medieval times).

Worst is that the autor is a famous french autor, Philippe Tessier, who wrote a succesful RPG (Polaris). But that book, is worth, erm....

Well I think it's available on Noble Knight, btw, who has some french books too.

And let me know how much you vomit that book.

Oh I had heard it was bad and thanks for the warning.

But just like a train wreck, sometimes you find yourself drawing closer just to see just how bad it really is.

There used to be a pretty awesome Game store in 29 Palms. Just off the military base. Don't know if it is still there, but they always had tons of stuff.

Can't speak for all of Cali, but I know of one or two game stores in San Diego that have a good stock of older SR books, and keep up on the current. There also used to be a great used book store in the Walnut Creek area, but I haven't been there in years. They always had a ton of stuff, novels and source books.

First, which stores in San Diego? Thanks.

Second, if you're a member of one or more book-swapping rings / services / etc., they tend to do pretty brisk trade in Shadowrun novels. A couple months back I finally went back and acquired all the novels I was missing. I think I only had to resort to Amazon for 1 or 2 out of a dozen or so. In general, they were in surprisingly good shape as well (the benefit of dealing with other fans and collectors I suppose).

And yes, occasionally you get a real quality stinker buying used on Amazon; however, in my experience if you politely let the seller know you're unhappy and why ("This book was marked "As New" on the website and yet appears to be a heretofore undiscovered victim of Jack the Ripper"), they'll refund your $4 without any fuss in order to avoid a one-star review.

Best one I found was Game Empire, off Clairemont Mesa , just off the 805. They're a little pricey for new stuff, but everyone seems to be these days. They stock a fair amount of SR regularly, as well as other stuff such as Pathfinder, and have crap ton of tables , mostly for miniatures. But the staff there was pretty cool, and over by the gaming tables they have a couple of shelves full of older books. My personal favorites were 2nd Edt SR, Earthdawn, and a bunch of the Darksun setting.

If you make it by there, stop by the book store three or four shops over, Mysterious Galaxies. Awesome book store, have authors in there all the time for signing, blah blah blah. There's also a cool cigar store at the next shopping center up the street. wink.gif

i think amazon is great for any book, unless i look on half.com

just read 'Dead Air' by Jak Koke #22 in the first fiction printing, i think it's my favorite book yet. just putting that out there. about to read wolf raven, then never trust an elf, then i'm going to read all the recent e-book only fictions available.

It's nice to try and support your Friendly Local Game Store when you can. Unfortunately it's damn hard these days to find ones with good shadowrun titles.

Also, Just Say No to Nyx Smith. Ugh. No, just no.
