Full Version: Confusion about SR6 Magic Points and Power Points at Chargen?

There is plenty of confusion about Magic Points and Power Points, at least that is what I have been hearing.
More specifically, how many Power Pointss will you have if you either raise or lower your Magic points during character creation?
Anyone experience any confusion during Chargen?

There is a bit of debate on RAW vs RAI.

As it stands right now, your Power Points are based on the unadjusted Magic Score from the Priority table as per pg 66 in Core. specifically:
QUOTE
Adepts have a pool of points equal to their Magic (as listed in the Priority table, before any adjustments) that they use to purchase adept powers.

They have already said on other forums that the example characters were probably built on pre-release rules that had since been adjusted, hence the confusion if you try using them as an example.

So as it stands at the moment, an Adept may buy their Magic up to 6 with the special adjustment points, but the PP would remain at 4 if you took Priority A.

You can follow the discussion here and see what evolves from it.

And lowering a characters Essence will reduce their Magic Rating and reduce their Power Points the same amount, during Chargen or whenever.
So it is only possible to raise Power Points after Chargen, through Initiation or raising Magic Points through advancement.

Au contraire, there is nothing in 6E RAW saying you *lose* power points if Magic goes down.

It has always been that way in past editions, but it is not spelled out in this edition, so a possible case of RAW vs RAI.

And even if they do clarify and say yes you could lose PP when Magic drops, there is a way around some of this in chargen .

Remember we said you can buy your Magic up, but it won't effect your Power points? If you took priority A and got 4 Magic and thus 4 PP and then use your Special adjustment points to buy up Magic to 6, you could in theory still take 2 pts worth of Essence in cyberware which would drop Magic back to 4 meaning you do not lose any PP.
If you make it go lower, then yes you could lose PP potentially.

And 2 points of Essence worth of wares without wrecking you adept powers opens up some possibilities.

Interestingly this is leading to arguments about Burn out mages /adepts, who basically rack up the cyber til they hit Essence 1/Magic 1 and then just initiate the hell of them earning back the Magic and PP to regular levels. A long game to be sure, but you can end up with some real monsters...

I think that is not a mistake or misprint, I mean essence loss not affecting PP's in this edition.
I like Adepts and Mystic Adepts as alternatives to heavily agumented characters.
Now, low essence characters have always suffered some brutal setbacks that are not revealed until the supplement rules get released. But cybered adept characters are looking mean. cyber.gif

Changing the Subject.....
Building Technomancers finally has the points they need, they need just two skills in 6e. If you count Electronics.
Everything else is multitasking into other Archtypes or taking TM all the way. Plenty of points to spread around.
Possibly the best techonmancers of any edition?

And....That there is no mention of max Magic Rating is another complaint.
But, I believe there is actually no maximun limit on Magic points as your rating cannot start out at more than 5 at Chargen, and I didn't see any restrictions on how high a character's magic points can be through Adjustment Points.
Unless I missed it. eek.gif
