I say my farewell, "Looking forward to it" I say with a small smile. It gets easier with practice, and I am so happy we got our way. Tien would seem like an interesting friend if that were even possible. An appreciation of art and magical artifacts and a generous budget means that he'll have a lot of interesting things in his connection. I take a mental note to ask for a tour once we deliver his XT and collect the money.
My step becomes lighter once I am out of the office and lighter once out of the building. In the car, I feel free enough to say "Wow" overwhelmed with the amount of money we would get from a single job - a year ago, I was hard-pressed for a loan with insane interest rates, and here we are planning to make buckets of money. Though, dreaming is dangerous, and we first need to deliver.
Like Jimmy likes to say "Happy people do not check for bombs under their car", and Iktomi be willing we should be vigilant.

The ride down the elevator is uneventful and gives the team a moment to take a look at the dossier.
Friends and Associates of Xavier Tien IV
- Victoria Arione
Born in Dallas, Texas, August 23 2052
Education: Austin Thaumaturgic Institute, doctor thesis on ritualistic summoning
Status: Current partner/girlfriend of Xavier IV
Known address: 831 Ave A, Snohomish
Notes: No events of note in her personal history, beyond a very serious car crash in February 2077. Driver and backseat passenger were killed, Victoria survived with apparently no injuries. Link to hospital report.
- Phillip Creamor
Born in Salem, Massachussetts, March 15 2055
Education: MIT&T, no graduation, but highly skilled healing specialist
Status: Friend and confident of Xavier IV, freelancing contract mage
Known address: 16028 Dayton Ave N, Shoreline
Notes: Phillip was Xavier's lab partner at MIT&T. When the lockdown happened, Phillip had to surive inside Boston. The trauma prevented him from returning to university. He came half a year ago to Seattle, reconnecting with Xavier and helping him with his research.
- Ulrich 'Gladius' Wolf
Born in Chicago, Illinois, September 01 2054
Education: University of Chicago, Masters in Evocation, Psionic tradition.
Status: Ex-Ares Firewatch, now security consultant.
Known address: none
Notes: Ulrich has helped Xavier on several occasions to enter dangerous high magic zones and provided protection for him and his team. Ares has not been forthcoming about his background, but there is reasonable suspicion that he left their services very hurriedly.
- Xavier Tien IV
Born in Seattle, Washington, April 20 2059
Education: MIT&T, doctor thesis on spirit powers
Status: Currently on sabbatical from MIT&T to conduct independent studies
Known address: 1423 Bellevue Way NE
Notes: Since he met Victoria at the MIT&T christmas party, he has shown a serious change in his character - he took a sudden sabbatical and went back to Seattle to conduct independent studies.

Mato is a bit put out to be so quickly dismissed. He had more questions about the theft, plus he wanted to review the footage himself and have the astral eyes inspect the space. There were so many things to check for: mind control, illusions, deepfaked camera footage, etc. He hopes this rapid dismissal is just Wakan Tanka ushering him along, pointing him down more productive avenues.
"Alright, let's scope these out," he says, even though that's a statement of the obvious. "Might make sense to divide and conquer. They don't take kindly to metas up in Snohomish, so it would make sense for Raven and Tamarind to visit there when we're going in person.
"We already too a stab at IV in the Matrix. AM, Tamarind, do you want to do the honors on Ms. Arione, plus Mssrs. Creamor and Miller?
"I'm going to call up Brad Burns. He's the security consultant I met at Pike Hall back at Christmas. Maybe he's heard of Mr. Miller. Or, I think Brad lives in Snohomish too. I wouldn't think that he would run in the same circles as Ms. Arione but it can't hurt to ask."
<<@Brad Hey Burns, Miguel Torres here. It's been a minute, hasn't it? Quick question for you. I'm trying to find Axel Miller, who goes by the callsign 'Gladius'. Story is that he's Ex-Firewatch and is now freelancing as a security consultant. Helps clients enter dangerous high magic zones and provides protection while they are there. You ever crossed paths with him? I'm hoping to get in touch.>>
He'll wait to ask amount Ms. Arione in a minute.

"Assuming all the information is correct, it certainly sounds like Victoria is not an angel. Maybe take a closer look into that car crash? Who was killed? How did it happen? She surviving might have been because of her magic. But then why did she not protect the others as well? Maybe she couldn't, or maybe she even caused the accident. Wildly speculating here, but probably worth a closer look. Splitting up seems like a good idea at this point. I doubt we will find him or her at their home addresses, but maybe there are some clues. Of course, we somehow need to get inside. For his flat, that is easy enough. For hers that might be a bit more tricky. But let's just go there and see what we can do."

Well, I guess it is only me being worked out about what happened. I chip in after Raven. "She seems to have money from her address; she is a mage in her own right. They went to MIT&T together, so it all makes sense. The car crash is possible with magic or blind luck, but if one of these identities is fake, it would be her. Such stories are a convenient way to keep the SIN alive for a second user hypothetically speaking ofcourse."
Mato's suggestion feels like offering a child a second slice of chocolate pie; my face lights up at the opportunity of doing that right now. My lips curl to a smile, and I also say, "Yes, please - I want to do it...!" but I do have some self-control despite the desire to spend another hour or two in the beautiful matrix. Let's start doing house calls and getting our leads while the trail is relatively hot. "Perhaps we can start at 1423 Bellevue Way NE? Tien Junior's address? We can do the searches, but it would take some time. So it may be best to search while on the move." I suggest, but my hand reaches into my purse to stroke my beloved Erika, eagerly waiting for us to reconnect.

Brads reply came quickly:
<<Hey man, how are you? Live's been pretty boring since the family started their world tour. Come over to the hall if you have time.
I've heard of Gladius. He was hired by the family once or twice for a vacation in Africa. Pretty intense guy according to McElroy. They considered hiring him as support for the Couriers, but apparently Gladius turned them down.
Afaik, the family was very impressed with his service. McElroy thinks, the man had some bad experiences with bug spirits. Made him somewhat paranoid.

Now that was an angle, she had not considered herself.
"That's an interesting thought. A fake identity. If there is any way to figure that out, it would be a very strong hint towards her being the malicious party here. Oh, and let's not forget: Nice job in there! I guess, we also have to thank whoever gave this recommendation, this is one big job. He is putting a lot of trust into our ability to solve this. Let's not let him down."
This definitely was a lot of money for them. Potentially. They first had to actually manage to find that artifact and his son.

Mato debates how distant to keep Brad. He decides to straddle the line. He doesn't want to lie but discretion demands that he be coy, at least for now.
<<Yes, potentially>> he tells Brad, which might not be truthful at the moment but, in this business, who knows? It could be true next week. <<Do you have any contact information? I only know him by reputation.>>
<<Or what about Victoria Arione? Have you heard of her? She's Awakened too, and I believe she moves in the same circles as Gladius. I think she's based up in Snohomish. I thought you might know her out of proximity if nothing else.>>
<<What are you doing this weekend? I'll swing by. Any takeout you've been craving? My treat.>>
To the rest of the team he says, "AM, Tamarind, you deep-dive. I'll drive. We'll hit the IV's Bellevue address first on our way back to Crossroads to pick up Tamarind's van. We'll split up from there.
"As for fake IDs, these folks are heavily credentialed. Can we ping their respective universities to confirm their enrollment dates and degrees received? Maybe even slip in behind the firewalls for a private peek..."
He doesn't know if AM will be into this or not but he'll let her decide.
"Perhaps the alumni offices know where they are. Fundraisers look for donations will find you." This is said only half in jest.

You and Mato are the best wing people. I comment to Raven.
I shake my head as if to say, "I don't know" about the fake identities - it was just intuition, with no way to check without delving into one hell of a rabbit hole - and even if Vici is fake, so what? I am fake. It does not mean she wants to steal XT or abuse the third.

<<Yeah, there's a commcode around - I'll attach it to the message.
Arione? Never heard of her. What's her deal?
Absolutely - I could go for a good soyburger to be honest. The cook here is great and all, but now and again a bit of junkfood is just what you need to get by.>>AM finds quite a bit more about Arione, now that she knows what to look for.
The accident happened close to the Azlan border in Texas. The car drove of the road into an irrigation ditch, rolled over and caught fire. Victoria apparently was thrown out of the car, as she was found five meters away from the blaze. There was no obvious reason, why the car left the road, so it was deemed a driver error. No data could be retrieved from the wreckage. Fire investigators were amazed that the car's battery cooked off so spectacularly, but again, put it down to bad luck. Arione was admitted to a hospital close by, but checked herself out after a preliminary diagnosis that attested her perfect health. She declined a healing mage, citing that she was more than capable to administer her own health spells and had no interest in paying for unneeded services.
There is a short mention of her visiting a few auctions for magical artifacts during the last year, but no record of her buying anything.
Phillip has published a few papers on transformation magic, theorizing about where mass in- and decrease comes from in various magic spells. He proposes that mass is put in storage and retrieved from other physical metaplanes with the astral body acting as a bridge between them. There are no publications after Boston Lockdown. He completely fell off the map after that. His first interaction with the matrix was two years later when he bought a soylatte in Seattle. There are no records of him using his SIN to enter the city.
Gladius has a few recommendations from other clients on the matrix - he is a well regarded mercenary mage, specializing in expeditions into dangerous areas. There is a bounty on his head that seems to originate from another mercenary group, but looks like a cut-out. There are darkweb messageboard messages about him regularly fighting against would be bounty hunters and having a sizeable killcount by now. His last known position was in Seattle as well when he bought an ammount of reagents large enough to trigger a background check.
Driving through Seattle was a breeze today. The team needed barely 40 minutes to reach the condo of Xavier Tien IV. According to the mailboxes, four other parties live in the building, with Tien's appartment being on the top floor of four.
The main entrance is closed and requires RFID keys to open. A small camera overlooks the entrance as well.
There is a companel to directly call each of the appartments. There seems to be an underground parking garage beneath the building, but the garage door is closed

Mato is doing his best to reserve judgement. He trusts III's observations about how the IV's behavior changed following the new relationship. Correlation is not causation, he reminds himself. And the III's challenging relationships with women suggest that he might have a tainted opinion of the opposite sex.
"Got a potential commcode for Gladius," Mato reports to the car. "Sounds like he has a solid rep, but also a price on his head, perhaps from competitors. I'm guessing that will make him wary of us. If we approach him, it should be delicately."
He considers the accident report. "Is there any indication about what tradition Ms. Arione follows?" he asks. "I'm told that possession traditions can make you physically formidable, to the point of being thrown from a vehicle and escaping unharmed.
"Taking it a step further, maybe she has a rider that's manipulating her into manipulating the IV. Food for thought."

Working in AR, Tamarind hadn't pulled up the data on the contacts as quickly as AM had. But that was fine, AM was enjoying the hot sim experience, instead of being terrified that she'd be unable to make herself jack out for most of a day and wake up by being dumpshocked in a jail cell. Tamarind mostly felt glad for the elf's enjoyment of the sim-side of the matrix. Mostly.
"I agree that that the girlfriend is the most likely influence of change. But some people came out of Boston ... strange. Some outright monads from what they say, and I'm sure post-traumatic stress, but I've heard rumous of some who had changed, but who were not claiming to be Monads. I don't know how true it is, but it made some minor waves when people came back to the FRFZ and didn't fit back into that weird society they have there. So worth paying attention to the friend, too."
Once they'd arranged their initial destination, Tamarind had her van meet them there. They were going back to the house after anyway, for everyone else to grab gear, but she still wanted the van to come and bring her drones, in case they were useful. She also gives the location to her delivery drone, for it to bring the Taco Temple order. She mentions to the others "Food will be here in five, just so that we don't have to stop later. I can have that drone do an overhead scan on the way in, just to make sure there is nothing odd to be seen from that sort of angle."

"You do not need possession to pull that off. Some spells would certainly do the trick. Heat up the battery, levitate out of the car, ... it's definitely something to keep in mind. Declining the mage... sure, it makes sense, considering she is an accomplished mage herself, but if she has the money, and was in an actual accident, why not let a trained professional make sure you are okay? I mean, yeah, could be, but then again... all the small things are adding up. Any word on who else was in that car?"[ Spoiler ]
I suppose, Mato also mentions the reagents?
"Could that 'Gladius' also be part of it? A huge stack of reagents is usually used for rituals, but especially binding. That artifact is used for conjuration. Why just now? Does not sound like a coincidence to me."When they arrive at their first stop, Rachel offers:
"I could take a quick look from the astral, see if there is any magical security. If not, I could also just make one of us look like him, when going inside."If noone objects, she will lean back in her seat and project into astral space, to see what the building is like from this point of view.

Once we arrive, I lift my matrix attention to the host, impressed with its structure and a bit tempted to just test my abilities against it. Though I know very well that it is not without risks and that I shouldn't just do it- my team deserves to understand the risks involved even if I am the one cracking this host. I can hear parts of my brain scream
"do it!", but my sheer willpower is enough to suppress it. Following the Trickster has made me more aware of my limitations and how my actions invite mischief. I need to let the adrenaline run sometimes - I feel too uptight, but I have 250k reasons to be in control right now.
If the Trix security is so tight - it is just one aspect; there are always alternatives like asking nicely or physically entering after some neighbor opens the door, we do not have to hack it. However, it is nice to have options. Black claims that "You can open more doors with please than with a cyberdeck," so I decided to test her hypothesis.
... I take a few moments to see if I can find evidence of any new tenants in this building - or any listing of properties for rent. I am looking for any legitimate reason we may have to bypass the door - either by telling a plausible lie to one of the neighbors or seeing a property for rent. I mainly see what I can find about the building and try to devise a social way to do it.

Using the RFID signal, the door opens and admits the team to the staircase and the elevator. At the top floor the transponder again works its magic and opens the heavy door into the condo. It takes a while for Trouble, AM and Rachel to get through the ward and across the doorstep, but once inside they see a spacious appartment with an open plan kitchen, a master bedroom with bathroom attached, a guest room, another bath, a work/study room, a small home gym, a storage room and the large living room, dominated by a hermetic lodge.
The place looks clean and organized. No stray papers, dust or anything out of place.
Several oil paintings decorate the walls - all of them seem to be from the recent 50 years and take on motives from the 6th world: The Great Ghost Dance, dragons in the sky, the horrors of the first arcology, a drug fuelled nightmare hellscape titled "Tempo" as well as the unmistakable Chicago crater, where Ares detonated an atomic bomb against the bugs.
The astral side is even more disturbing: A pervasive taint fills the room, raising the background count significantly. This is evil... Like many shamans, I object to the concept of binding, but not being a conjurer myself, I try to be polite about it. It takes reaching a place like this to know in my guts that whatever the Third practices here, it is bad news. I feel Trouble's pain, and I take it out and spend a few minutes getting out and in again. I cannot let my child suffer in this particular manner.
"I must take Trouble out of this hell; it is torture to keep a spirit to be here."It takes me a few minutes to return - this damn ward is very powerful.
"Some thoughts, I think the ward is done by the girlfriend - being a ritual expert. So it may give us a glimpse at her signature. The apartment is clean, with no dust, so he has been here very recently. I look at the notes and say
I can only understand the gist of it, but these appear to be binding rituals; they got the necessary steps of a binding contract, but it is much stronger than the contracts used by most conjurers. I suspect that you can bind spirits that would otherwise use any shred of free will to resist you. The background count indicates they already did something similar in this apartment. "Do you think there is some way to access the security system from here? We do have a key, after all. Maybe there are no cameras in here, probably not, but outside for sure."Since everything is contained within the flat, Rachel wonders...
"So, this is just one flat here. What about the neighbors? Do you think it is worth talking to them? Or take a secret look into their flats? There does not seem to be any astral protection there. Even though, they likely have no idea what has been going on here, maybe they have seen... something useful. Mato spotted immediately the reason, why the skylight was slightly and: the motorized clasp mounted on the ceiling smelled of overworked metal. Barely noticeable, but slight scratches on the extending rods indicated that the skylight had been pried upward with considerable control and force.
AM found four silent running devices within 100 m. One of which had the signature of a Kanmushi cockroach drone. The other two were sensor tags. The last one identified as some kind of actuator.
Rachel noticed that the lodge and the outer ward had been created by two different people. Both signatures she would recognize again if she felt them.
Also there were signs that a recent summoning had been conducted by the person who had created the lodge.
Tamarind's drones had no problem to find the drone and the sensor tags in their sweep: One Tag was in the workroom, one in the living area they were standing in and the drone hid in the master bedroom on top of the lamp.
It had been modified with a single manipulator arm and an adhesive sticker - likely to carry and place a tag.

"The bigger concern is, shall we say, 'the competition'. See these scratches here?" He points to them on the extending rods of the skylight. "Someone pried open the skylight just a crack, presumably to place these snoops." He indicates the drone and the tags. "Now why they didn't close the skylight behind themselves is beyond me. Perhaps it jammed, or maybe they were sloppy."
Mato tries to close the skylight to test his theory. He'll force it if necessary. "The IV is rich, but water damage could seep to the neighbors below," he explains. "Big hassle."

<<THoughts about the electronic spies? I can have one of my drones taser them, without showing ourselves anymore than we already have. Or AM can hack them if you want to see what additional info we can pull from them. >>
Personally Tamarind figures that they've likely been noticed, and that there will be little to pull from the drones or tags -- but she she is happy for AM to put them through the wringer if she wants to go to the bother. At least there is comfortable furniture to be on, should she want to go into hot sim

AM went to work. Gaining a MARK on the sensor tag and therefore its master device was easy, but not totally trivial. The Agent on the device resisted. Also, the drone had uploaded it's data files to the commlink only a few seconds earlier, leaving the drone blank. Still, the files were on the commlink and she had access to that as well. Though the agent was using quite a few resources for self analysis. She knew she had to act quickly. AM saw the file with the lable "surv_2079-03-19-12-42-39" as the most likely. Firing up her editing software she tried to copy the file - only to receive an error message
"File Encrypted - Password: _______"Meanwhile the agent had begun a shutdown, only milliseconds remained for an educated guess which password the agent had set on the file.

The one time I do it in AR and without magic turns out to be essential; there is an agent there a step ahead of me. I would have cursed, but there is no time for that- I don't blink and work as quickly as I can within the limitations of the physical space. Password - dammit, I type the first thing that comes to mind.

Useless facts are a funny thing - they are useless until they aren't.
In that case AM remembered a blog post about a bunch of vulnerabilities in new software. Among them, that a particular brand of agents developed by Mitsuhama had a weakness in their encryption scheme. Unless explicitly changed by the user, they chose a default password based on the timestamp they encrypted a certain file. Probably a legacy bit of code from early development that was never patched out, since a new user could pretty easily change the default setting to something much more secure.
All that information ran like a flash through AM's mind.
Entering the six digits... And the copy process started just in time to transfer the file, before the commlink vanished from the matrix.
It became clear, that really only the drone and the sensor tag in the living room had recorded video and sound, the second tag was not part of the infiltration.

I suppress the urge to cry something dramatic like "I got it!" mainly because I do not want the opposition to know I did. I have no idea what they would do with the knowledge that I got *something*, but people can justify a lot of immorality for getting their hands on a three-of-a-kind artifact. I protect the file and then continue with my investigation. I then take a few precious moments to finish checking the other devices - which are sadly dull.
>> I found two devices used for infiltration, the drone and a sensor tag, in the living room; the other tags are not recording. Their master comlink turned off once I placed a mark on it, but I managed to steal a file right before it disappeared. The devices were wiped clean once the infiltrator identified our meddling; perhaps it was better to scan the Trix before breaking & entering. Just a thought for the future. So let's hope that our new file has something worthwhile in it. [file attached]

A quick scan of the material revealed that at about midnight the last activity had been recorded in the living room.
The video showed a man - Xavier IV - and a woman - Victoria, presumably - as they left the building. Scrolling back another person was there, according to the quick dossier this had to be Phillip - he left at about 2300h.
Before that, the three seemed to have been enacting a ritual with Victoria leading. The whole thing had been going on for 10 hours.
Just at the start of the recording the team got a glimpse of the Xenobite Tesseract as Phillip picked it out of a black sportsbag and quickly put it back inside.
In the hour between Phillip leaving and IV and Victoria leaving, both seemed to use the bathroom and pack things into tracking bagpacks.
The rest of the gear also indicated wilderness activities.
The whole time, none of them spoke a word. But they looked at each other a lot - just as the team did when Bobby cast Mindlink.

"Great work, AM," Mato tells the elf. He pats her on the back, a gesture of questionable comfort given his hard, inhuman hands.
"What jumps out to me here," he says, "is that this is from last night. The IV took the artifact yesterday, which means that he would have only had it a short while before this was recorded.
"To me that means one of two things: either a third-party knew about the theft almost immediately, or they knew in advance that the theft was going to happen and they were ready for it."
Mato juts out his jaw as he ponders things.
"It means we're behind the well-informed third party. We have a lot of catching up to do."

I enjoy Mato's gesture; perhaps my transformation is making me closer to his size and more approachable. I'd want him to warm up to me. Still, considering how stoic he is about everything, reaching out is not easy. I struggle to keep a bucketload of emotions and occasionally hallucinations that only I can see under the guise of sanity and civility. I mean, the man does not even need coffee because of the sleep regulator, whereas getting up after a night of gaming or studying is a struggle to me.
His amped-up carbon masterpiece limbs took some getting used to; it took a while to stop staring at them when I arrived at SIS, and then I just had to research them a little bit. He overclocks them well beyond the specifications, allowing me to overclock the deck and understand its true limitations - rather than what the manual guarantees. When he pats me, I grin at Mato and say I was lucky. I feel comfortable saying that I should have been augmented by magic and in hot simulation before handling such a delicate piece of hardware.
I agree; there is a third party, and we are behind, but the critical question is where they went. Do you want to visit the parking lot to see if they used his car?

Tamarind admires what AM was able to grab so quickly. Over the years various people have suggested to her that she had the makings of a hacker, and she'd toyed with trying to learn the skills at one point. But the fear that she associated with being in VR after her arrest made her all the more wary of too much matrix activity. But AM had managed this in AR! Perhaps Tamarind should invest in modifying some of her electronics to support proper hacking, not just the potential of quick emergency jabbing at things. Well, that was something to consider when they were not on a deadline.
For now, she saw a couple of loose ends before they headed out. <<that other stealth tag, whose it it then? Ana Maka, can you pull anything off of it at all? Is it even matrix active currently? And how tough is the building security, any chance we could trace their departure, see who took what transportation? Otherwise the trail gets more challenging.>>
She gathered up her drones, checking over each one quickly to make sure that they were doing well before packing them away. "Not much else to find here I guess. Too much to hope that they would have left a nice paper map around with a destination circled."

"III said, 'He is not in his flat, nor in one of the summer places of our family. And he hasn't checked into a hotel under his name. My yacht hasn't left the harbor and my private jet also is grounded. His SIN wasn't registered as having left Seattle.'
"Let's presume that's all true and that IV isn't just, say, camping out on the yacht while it's moored at the dock. Although we should check that.
"The wilderness gear they are grabbing suggests that they are headed somewhere rural. It's possible they could sneak onto Council Island, especially with the collective magical abilities, but I'm not sure that it would be worth it. If there's no record of the IV's SIN having left Seattle then there are two possibilities: first, that they're in one of the rural areas of the Metroplex, or two, maybe they're smuggling themselves out of town. They might be familiar with smuggling from their experiences in Boston.
"If they stayed in town, they could be somewhere up in Outremer. The eastern fringes of Snohomish and Redmond start butting up against the foothills of the Cascades too.
"If they're smuggling themselves out of town, I know a few possible routes off the top of my head:
"There's a farm up in Snohomish that straddles the border. For the right price they'll let people cross.
"Down in Carbonado there's a bunch of mining tunnels that cross the border. They lead to Cascade Ork lands. I've used those tunnels myself back when we were trailing Bonita. I know some of those guys.
"Or you can cross the lava or ash flats. There's the Verge in southeast Redmond, or the southern edges of Puyallup. The elves of Tarislar can get you across too.
"Or, you know, you could just jump on a boat on Puget Sound and sail for Salish-Shidhe."
He puffs his cheeks out and exhales at all the possibilities.
"And they have, what a 16, 17-hour head start on us? We're going to need to narrow down the options. The only good news is that they had a full day of activity with that ritual, so they were probably exhausted. I'm hoping they didn't get far before needing to bed down for the night.
"At this point we probably need to start snooping cameras outside to see if we can get a sense of which direction they went."

Rachel also looks at the video footage, mostly trying to discern the social order between them. Are they acting together in a manner that suggests they see each other as equals, or is one commanding the others. Now, they do not talk, but there is still the body language and posture to be considered.

I comment to Mato "They are a bunch of nerds from MITnT obsessed with magic; I am not sure they have the street smart to deal with that kind of people, but speculation aside, they may have dirty laundry, and with your olfactory sensors it can help find them. Mages may be invisible or soundless - but I haven't encountered a spell for being odorless. Raven, if you can pull a Bobby and turn into a hound or something, it may also apply to you."
She thinks Let's scan the room, perhaps they made a mistake and forgot their earbuds slaved to their very expensive and highly secure comlinks or a magical trinket that Raven or a spirit can use to trace back to them -heck there can even be bounded spirits here. With the long-term service of preventing theft or something along these lines. We really need to finish here before we move on, let's give it ten minutes?"
I say and carefully examine the stealth tag slaved to the comlink - perhaps that one has some data left on it, or perhaps I notice anything else of importance. After that I'll help with the search, starting with the kitchen, and then the bedroom and whatever other rooms they have. I'll even check the shower or toilets, and their trash. Perhaps they ordered something unusual and the package is still there.

<< Judging from the video, Victoria is clearly in charge here. Xavier appears to be her right hand. The two work very well together. Phillip just seems to be their lackey. So, either Victoria is controlling Xavier somehow, or these two are just made for each other. If it is the first, we need to break her control somehow. If it is the latter, I wonder, if we even can get him to talk to his father again. Of course, first we need to actually find them. >>[ Spoiler ]

I am a bit surprised at my recent discovery, a heat signature RFID and a can opener - are likely the way the window was opened, but there are footprints, probably the guy installing the actuator; I wonder how he had the sensor inside - someone that could legitimately enter the apartment? Perhaps.
I send Trouble to look at the roof, looking for anything 'engine' near the sky window where he found his footprints. >>... I think I am close to figuring out how they placed the drone inside - they used an electric can opener parry the sky window and a heat sensor inside to trigger the can opener. We're dealing with some creative minds here, but I suspect someone has been here before because the sensor needs to be placed inside. I want to find the actuator and verify that it is on the sky window that we're not missing anything - and that RFID tags are running silently and understand which room they wanted full before activation.
I enter the workroom to see if anything happens; if the actuator starts working, then the tag is there. Then I take an astral look and try to make sense of what I am seeing if there is anything there, I want to talk to it.

The moment AM stepped into the work room, she heard the whirring sound of a stressed motor and the unmistakeable sound of a tin can getting ripped open at the seams.
From under the desk a tiny potted cactus fell on the floor. The terracotta pot hit the floor and broke.
For a moment that was all that happened. Then the cactus began to grow - massively so. It's arms elongated and grew hands, two bulbous blossoms bloomed at the top, giving the appearance of two large eyes - focusing on the intruder.
And still the creature grew, turning moment by moment more humanoid. It took AM a moment to realize that she was looking here at a plant spirit, albeit one of such power and intensity as she hadn't seen ever before.
A voice like a thousand needles grating against each other said only one word:

"Pause there," Mato says, holding up a hand.
"IV made it out of Boston. Philip made it through the Lockdown. That suggests a certain survival instinct. IV's girlfriend Gracie did not make it out. That kind of thing will harden a man.
"They made it into town without it registering on their SINs. We know from our research how discrete IV is. See how meticulous this research is? Let's assume they apply that same level of rigor to all areas of their lives.
"Let's not dismiss them as academic nerds. Let's work under the assumption they are geniuses who have applied their massive intellectual gifts to the situation at hand. We should not underestimate them."Then they start searching the other rooms and all hell breaks loose.
"Time to go!" he suggests.

Tamarind was glad that she'd packed up her drones, because it would have been a bad time to be chasing after a stray Kanmushi.
As soon as Mato makes the call, she is heading out the door. The noise, and the glimpse of the growing cactus she sees through the door, are enough to convince her that there is no point in setting up a drone taser swarm, their best bet is speed. She heads for the stairs, then pauses to see if the others are making it out OK. She even unzips the tote bag, to let the Aunties and Uncle out if needed as a distraction. That could be a very expensive distraction, but it would probably be worth it to save one of her colleagues.

It takes a millisecond to appreciate my nonexistent odds against such a spirit. I run, but I don't completely lose it. If I survive it, I'll feel so stupid for assuming silent devices are connected to each other - there was no reason to assume it. Silly me and silliness have terrible consequences.
I briefly look at Mato with a worried expression and say I agree, Run!.
I run toward the ward - for a brief moment, I hope to cross it peacefully, but I can't, and there is not enough time to keep trying. I go though knowing full well that it may be embarrassing to lose a foot of height and giving up a spell that I bled for - but like with the watcher spirits, sometimes things just don't work out. If the spell fails, I'll change clothes and continue with my life until we finish this job, but first, I need to get out in one piece with the people I care for.
