Does everyone move there after 10 years running or something?

How does one go about creating a character born, bred and not likely to move from there?

The way my gm tells it, it's not going to happen. So my big question is, how do mundanes survive there if newly minted characters cant?

Yes, I am drunk. Why do you ask?
Frag-o Delux
Why wouldn't anyone be able to live there? Big deal the outback has gotten a little more dangerous and the cities are little more screwed up, but that doesn't mean Australia is run like Lord Of The Flies, it is still a working country that has a few unique problems. Read the book, it is not as bad as you say your GM makes it out to be.
Connor
From what I recall it's really just the Outback, Sydney, and Tazmania that are screwed up. The coasts are still fairly habitable as well as any other non-outback area as far as I recall, so it shouldn't be a problem. And even though Sydney is screwed up though it still has a sizeable population that puts up with the unique problems that city faces.

I mean, people live on the slopes of frequently active volcanoes and in high risk eathquake zones or other places that see lots of natural disasters. Just because the mana and astral space got freaky doesn't mean it's going to cause everyone to leave.

Which book is this?

Target: Awakened Lands?
FlakJacket
Yup, that's the one. Also called Target: Oz by some because the books two thirds or so about the place- due to the fact that they didn't have enough other locations so they fell back on it.
kevyn668
Oz?
Connor
Oz is, from what I understand, a nickname Australians (maybe others?) have for the name of the country. Probably from the way it sounds with an Australian accent.
kevyn668
Got it.

Australia is perfectly livable as long as you don't try to do anything remotely interesting while there. Other than that, you hire big-paranormal-game hunters to help you on your runs.

So by that reasoning, Canberra and South Australia are perfectly safe. smile.gif
Kagetenshi
Only as long as you don't go watch a football match at the local bar. Gotta watch out for them, they can get interesting fast smile.gif

Only if you live in Bogan territory. The way I hear it, all those porno shops in Canberra are pretty interesting too. smile.gif

Wow! I'm surprised you guys even realised we were down here. I'll have to track down a copy of that sourcebook to find out what they've done to my beloved homeland. wink.gif

Before we all get carried away here I'd like to point out that as I understand it most of Target:Awakened Lands' Oz material was concieved and written by natives.

Which is probably why the rest of us still have no idea what's going on down there. nyahnyah.gif

I just had a look at a copy. (Quick, I know but you gotta know where to look). I must say it's reasonably accurate. It's a bit strange reading it though, as if it's already happened. Reading other sourcebooks based overseas it's easy to get caught thinking that it's all made up instead of being based on real places because I've never been there and probably never will. It's a bit different when it's your own country so I guess I know how some of you overseas runners feel when they mess up your home in the name of fiction. Ah well, I can complain. Melbourne's still standing. smile.gif

Does it still have bad weather? smile.gif

For the record, I believe you're on about the mana storms.

No, he's talking about Melbourne weather. Stereotypically cold and raining all the time.

I'd take Melbourne schizophrenic weather anyday over the damn heat found elsewhere ... i've had enough hot summers ...

The information on the One Nation party in T:AW is laughable biggrin.gif
Tziluthi
Jeez, at the moment I'd not mind a bit of heat. It's getting rather difficult to move my arse out of bed lately.

What, did Pauline turn out to be an Immortal Elf or something? smile.gif
20thCenturyFox
I don't know wether to laugh or throw up! wobble.gif

*Please explain* (sorry, couldn't resist)
Ghoste
Har har har! Piss funny 20thC-Fox. Poor Pauline, she should go back to selling fish and chips before she gets thrown in the clink again. Melbourne weather isn't all that bad. We're in a drought and suffering water restrictions if that's any indication.
20thCenturyFox
I reckon that Melbourne always gets a bad rap about the weather ... but you're right about water shortage ... hopefully this winter brings more rain otherwise my lawn's gonna die! smile.gif

Does anyone else think that T:AW missed a great opportunity to put in a little more 'Mad Max' (Road Warrior) action? I'm kinda dissapointed overall with it's look at Australia, if find it a little bland with it's vision of how Australia has ended up (the magic stuffs pretty good ... I guess that's what the books about tho). If anyone can find a copy i really suggest the old Chaosium Cthulhu Suppliement 'Terror Australis', probably the best Australian sourcebook ever.

Other Stuff i'd like to see would be a wider look at Australian Critters (again, Terror Australis was superb), more Australian Meta-types (i'd love to play a Mimi), information on outback 'rad-land' gangs, perhaps an adventure or two ... maybe i'll just get to work ...

... Actually, i wonder what happened to Pine Gap?
Aidley
Getting plenty of rain this week up on the Murray/Campaspe

As for Australian source books.... I still think you can't go past Pratchett for that one. It may be a novel, but by hell I'd love to do a run through EcksEcksEcksEcks....

Heh. EVERYTHING is better with a little Mad Max action. Hell, I've incorporated Mad Max action into my Seattle-based campaign. Puyallup has ASH DUNES. It had to be done!
