Full Version: Cicada Spirits

Is there any canon reference to cicada spirits? If the Universal Brotherhood business goes down in 2055, like I think it does, then that's a cicada year. That could be fun. What would be some good stats for the buggers? So far all I can tell is that they'd be lazy, stupid, and maybe drunk. And tasty, from what some of the people around here say. I'm thinking they shouldn't be too powerful, though, because they're nowhere near the Biblical plague I was expecting. Also, what's the range on the things? Are they all over North America, or just parts of it?

Are Cicada's not just a Beetle? Bug City might have something on them, but I can't remember this morning very well much less three weeks ago when I brushed up on Catharine the Terrible. I'm rambling.

There are different "broods" for different parts. Illinois Brood X(?) doesn't comes out until 2007.

[edit]Do not eat Cicada's if you are allergic to shellfish!
Panzergeist
They are in Magic in the Shadows.

They are first mentioned, I believe, in Bug city. The guy writing about the insect spirits mentions just how annoying they are as they make that cicada sound when the queens are investing new hosts. They and the fireflies are the new oddballs tossed into the mix in Bug City.

The Pennsylvania Brood X is out now. They only come out every 17 years.

And yes, there's info on Cicada Spirits in both Bug City and Magic in the Shadows.

They're also a lot louder that your average cicada, too. I believe there was a comment in BC by someone who thought a transformer was going out or something (and of course, went to investigate and never came back...)

Cicadas are NOT beetles!! Are you just a cat? *sigh* And they aren't locusts either. They belong to the family Homoptera, true bugs, and are quite tasty.

Cicadas have a range, but I'm not totally sure how far. Seems to mostly be the east coast up to around CT (past that it gets too cold), but they do go pretty far west. There are several different broods, and they take 1, 13, 17 or I think 7 years to mature, depending on the species.

Personality wise, they're probably a lot like teenagers. They just want to have sex, they think they're immortal, play their music too loud, drunk with freedom... Crazy kids, they're going to get themselves killed.
Nikoli
oh, and the 17 year brood, there can be up to a ton of them in an acre.
RangerJoe
To paraphrase the catch phrase, "In Bug City, CICADAS eat YOU!!"
Necro Tech
Just as a tidbit, Tucson Arizona is covered with the things as anyone who has attended the U of A can attest. A tree full can be heard from 50-100 yards easily and when they live outside your window you wish you had a flamethrower.
Nikoli
The 12 to 20 ft wasp spray and a bic also works wonders
nezumi
The wasp spray sounds pretty useful, but what's the pen for?
CircuitBoyBlue
So you can take names between kicking ass and going home early, I'd assume.

Thanks, by the way. I actually have Bug City, it's just not in DeeCee with me, and I didn't realize they were in there. I suppose they maybe shouldn't be, though, if the cicadas everywhere to the west aren't on the same schedules as the ones here.
Snow_Fox
News reports are that parts of North 'Jersey is ankle deep.

SR cover Cicadas on pps.77 and 139 of Bug City.

True forms are:
B:F+2 Q:(F+1)X4 S:F+3 C: - I: F-1 W:2 Armor F-2 No special power or attacks they are consider relatively harmless(compared to all the other nasty bug forms) They get used as look outs by the other bugs.

The Queens are more powerful with :
B: F+3 Q:(F+2)x4 S:F+2 C:F I:F W:F Armor: F

she is immune to normal weapons, has fear, venom, compulsion
Nikoli
That's bic lighter, not Bic the pen.

He did say he wished he had a flamethrower. biggrin.gif

But couldnt the fire travel back down the can and blow up in your hand? Or do those things have a 1 way valve or something that would prevent this type of thing from happening? Also what kinda damage stats would you give something like this in your games? Its basically a flametrower with a really low aval.
CircuitBoyBlue
I don't know about the valve, but I would think that the pressure of the fluid coming out of the can would be enough to keep the fire dirctional. As for stats, I don't think the fluid burns with nearly as much intensity as an actual flame thrower.
Crimsondude 2.0
Spoken like someone who's never made a hairspray flamethrower.

No, the flame can't go back into the canister. The pressure wouldn't allow it.
Joker9125
Ive done it before but never made it flame up for more than 10 or 15 seconds. I was just wondering if it would do that with prolonged use.
mfb
no more than something you're spraying with a waterhose will travel up the stream and into the hose.
nezumi
Yeah, I can attest that at least in some cases, it won't blow up in your hand. A friend of mine found out his spray on deoderant (sp?) was flammable and made a flamethrower (with me waiting patiently in the next room to call 911).

I wonder if you'd still get the bonus for it being an insecticide though, if you're burning it first.
Kagetenshi
You let it spray for a second or two before lighting it.
