Shadowland Seattle -> Seattle -> News
CODE
Picked this off the wire this morning, boys and girls. Anyone out there got some details conveniently left out by the corporate disinformation machine? -> Oracle
CODE
Pioneering computer programmer shot dead. Dr. Terence Casimir, an early pioneer in advanced neurel net programming, was found shot to death in his apartment today. Dr. Casimir spent much of his early career working for Hypersense Systems Incorporated, and was responsible for developing the Labyrinth series of expert search engines. Lone Star gave no details of the crime, saying only that an investigation was on-going.
CODE
Simple hit. What's the deal? -> Hollowpoint
CODE
I think he's asking for motive. Who's going to ice an over the hill programmer? Casimir was out of the game, retired. All his stuff is public domain. It has to be personal. -> Sugarbowl
CODE
Reasons for murder: profit, revenge, jealousy, to conceal a crime, to avoid humiliation or disgrace, and plain old homicidal mania. Says so right in the manual. -> Arch
CODE
That's some flyswatter. -> Cynic
CODE
Sparrow was on a chopper? -> EdwardBirmingham
CODE
Anyone else expecting Grassy Knoll to turn up any time now? -> Breeder
CODE

CODE

CODE

CODE
Ah -- -> Breeder
CODE
Nope, not today. -> EdwardBirmingham
CODE
I got a Renraku Playpal you can get cheap <<<<big grin>>>> -> Mom on the Run
CODE
<<<<rolls eyes>>>> Come on, everyone, I'm as cold and as miserable as the rest of you. I really don't want to have to trigger the glaciers in here. This is the Marketplace. If you guys want to talk about the crash, take it to the current events forum. -> Skai Hai
CODE
Two Sikorsky-Bell Luxura helicopters crashed on approach to Sea-Tac Airport earlier this evening. A short statement released by the NTSB had no details of the crash or casualties, stating only that an investigation was on-going. Weather is known to be a factor. - Associated Press
CODE
They're all dead. Brian Martin from INN was on-scene within minutes and all he saw were bodies. -> Newshound
CODE
So where's INN's report? ->Zapf Dingbats
CODE
Delayed, probably, or confiscated. NTSB has broad powers when it comes to the definition of 'evidence'. -> System Player
CODE
It wasn't a crash. The choppers were shot down. Check the passenger manifest. -> Grassy Knoll
CODE
Old news. -> EdwardBirmingham
CODE
Wasn't there some kind of advertisement in the classifieds about a guy who deals in these kinds of things? -> Epsilon
CODE
Plants is botany, not zoology. -> BearHUGs
CODE
Shouldn't Grail be posting these kinds of things? Is he even still around? -> Breeder
CODE
He's taken off? <<<<big grin>>>> I mean, oh damn. -> Skai Hai
CODE
I saw him swing by yesterday. -> Kiki
CODE
FURY!!!!! You no good slime. You double crossed the wrong people this time. Consider your time in the Metroplex nearly over. Do not bother responding to this ad, as we don't care to hear any more of your lame excuses.

Huh. Thought he was still on the east coast, but the trace shows up local. Hey, Byron, you wouldn't happen to know anything about a certain flyswatter, would you? -> Epsilon

Morning chummers. Just found this little snippet floating in my morning news digest. All you Children of the Matrix should be really happy about this one. -Blondie
CODE
So the little nerdlets are everywhere now. So what? -Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
Something the "little nerdlets" have been looking for is legitimacy. A movie deal like this may well help them be a more widely recognized as an actual subculture rather than just a bad joke. -Blondie
CODE
Or it could make the misconceptions even worse, especially with her playing the villain. Remember that decker movie ten years ago? For months even some of my closest friends were convinced that people with decks could hack their brains and read their minds when they were online. -Code Warrior
CODE
What, you mean you can't? -Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
And me, Sheepdog, though I'm not much for words. Did he leave a family? Has a trust been set up? -> SPD
CODE
The Seattle Spy noon report had the hit-and-run as being a lot older, and it was almost on SeaTac grounds. -> Newshound
CODE
Different time. Different accident. -> Road Rage
CODE
Or maybe planted misinformation? (Don't fry the messenger, Sheepdog!) -> Skeptic
CODE
It's been a busy 24 hours for accidents. -> Road Rage
CODE
Sheepdog, you're just pulling straight from the Lone Star press releases on these, aren't you? I heard the critical case is still on DocWagon turf, because of the territoriality dispute between DocWagon and Lone Star over releasing that guy into custody. -> Zapf Dingbats
CODE
Her decker friend messed him up. He didn't get off a single shot. Legally it's self defence, and DocWagon knows it. The Star's got no case. -> Hawkeye
CODE
What about possession and intent? -> Legal Beagle
CODE
One word: permits. -> You-Jay
CODE
I heard it was ten bullets the other guy punched into him before he went down, with military accuracy. -> Epsilon
CODE
Now there's an oxymoron. -> Hollowpoint
CODE
Ok, got a question. Anyone happen to catch the small scale military engagement at an old Exxon-Mobile station near the Barrens earlier this evening? And more importantly, anyone know more about it than the shots being fired? -Hillbilly
CODE
Small scale military engagement? Near the Barrens? Chummer, you really don’t get out here too much, do you? That’s like every fragging night on my block -Cornice
CODE
No drek, chummer. I’ve been out in the Barrens a bit, and these guys were pros. Good small unit tactics, decent to high-end firearms, cybered up. And that’s just the guys I was with. The other side didn’t seem like it was poorer, if you catch my drift. -Hillbilly
CODE
Got any other info? Names? Descriptions of weapons? Images? Gotta give us something more to work with than the description of an anonymous battle in the Barrens. -> Hollowpoint
CODE
They were Vinnie's boys taking down an O'Malley safehouse. The war's coming. Better start taking sides. -> Italian Stallion
CODE
Don't be a moron. The mob doesn't operate safehouses in the Barrens. All they do is dump bodies there, nothing else of profit lives in the Barrens. The Mafia is all about the benjamins. Besides, no one ever described Mafia soldiers as 'using small unit tactics'. There is a war brewing, but this is just a sideshow. Or someone else's fight. -> Grassy Knoll
CODE
This isn't a current event, so I'm bouncing it over to the new Agendas forum. Go play with the other organisations. -> Skai Hai
CODE
It is time to pay the piper Vinnie. |

Got a question about shadowrunning and legwork and things. Actually, got a lot of questions. Can I ask them here? I don't know where else to post it. -> Newchum
CODE
Sure kid, ask away, it's still a free shadowland. No one may answer though. ->Eclipse |
CODE
Okay, say you're going on your first run. What's the sort of things a guy should be looking for? -> Newchum
CODE
Am I asking this wrong? Is anyone home? I really need some help with this! -> Newchum
CODE
Yeah, first thing you look for is a 'Star officer, tell em you're up to something, and let'em drag you in. Newb. -> Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
Much as I hate to say it, Neal's got a point. First rule of paranoia is be careful what questions you ask. For instance, with your first question we can tell you're up to something; with the second we can tell it's going to be soon. Because of this every corp decker and his brother's going to be tracing your jackpoint, bugging your SIN, hacking your Gridguide transponder, and sleeping with your girlfriend to find out what. The best thing is, all that's automatic thanks to the wonders of our modern technocracy. -> Code Warrior
CODE
Oh lay off the guy. You're scaring him. -> Hawkeye
CODE
He *needs* scaring. It's a scary world out there. -> Code Warrior
CODE
Maybe the guy's not so new, think of that? Maybe the guy's a corper, looking for names of the real pros by seeing who responds intelligently for his threat database. -> Skeptic
CODE
Guess they're not gettin' you, eh? -Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
Yeah, guess you guys have a point, though it kind of means I'm screwed before I start. K, let's try a different question. Say you're trying to find someone and all you've got is one clue. You're saying not to give away too much here so all I'll say is that it's a physical clue, like a piece of paper. Where would you start? -> Newchum
CODE
You know a mage? That's one really great way to track someone if you have a pic or something. It can get expensive, especially if you don't have any favors to call in. And, before you ask: no, I don't know one you can use. Pull out the old psec and start dialing. Most this business, hell, most of life, is knowing the right people. -Hillbilly |
CODE
But what if it's not a picture? I'm not even sure if he's ever touched it. And it's kind of old. Would that still work? Everyone says mages are expensive. I'd hate to hire one, then find out I've thrown my money away. -> Newchum
CODE
Depends on the mage. Most actually require a tissue sample to track down a person; something with DNA so hair and fingernail clippings won't generally work either. I *have* heard rumors of vooduns and a few more advanced mages being able to create a ritual link--and thus be able to track someone--using only pictures and such, but it's generally more rare and advanced ritual magic. In fact, I think I saw an article on that the other day here on Shadowland. Let me see if I can pull it up... -> Diamond
CODE
Whoa, seriously? A mage can track me using my picture? That's so... not fair. Drek, I'm never leaving my room again. -> Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
Ah, just found it; here I'll post a link. -> Diamond
CODE
Holy drek, this was posted yesterday? How come I never noticed? Thanks chummer. -> Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
Heh, gotta keep up chummer, or the world will change without you noticing. -> Eclipse
CODE
ok. crap. so if it's not a picture and if I can't get a mage, I'm screwed? You guys can't all be mages. There's got to be some way of doing this that doesn't involve magic. -> Newchum
CODE
Oh for Spirits Sake! I think you might try looking in the Department of Licencing's records for the name. Then you'd also have an address and photo. You'd be able to work from that basic information to get all sorts of things. If you don't have a name but only an address you can check the Metroplex Government Auditor's office or the specific District's Planning and Zoning Commission for persons who own or have owned that parcel. Just because what you intend to do is illegal that doesn't mean you can't do something as simple as run a basic search engine through the local screamsheets for mention of some key words from your document. Remember the basic rule of all operations: K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) Otta B. Obvious
CODE
And, if you still come up short after that (or come up short on nuyen after the mage tells you their price), you can always do it the old fashioned way. Pound the pavement, talk to people, figure out who hated/loved/drank with/owed money to him, etc. Do the stuff the Star would do if they ever decided to look for a lost dog. -Hillbilly |
CODE
Hey, I chose my name for a reason. Comes to this kind of stuff, Im ignorant as hell, and I could easily have gone a whole lifetime without ever having to be in the position of having to know it. If the person existed in the fragging Licencing Departmnet, we wouldn't be having this conversation. I've got a name, and I've got a piece of paper. that's fragging it. I thought others would know loads more about making something out of that piece of paper than I do. I thought there were pros here, who'd be willing to help a chummer out. And if that's not enough for you, shit or get off the pot. It's been a real bad day. -> Newchum
CODE
Oh, you want shit, you little slitch? I'll give ya- << 2.3 Mp deleted by sysop >> -> Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
Riight, well I'd say that first line summarizes that post quite nicely. Keep the rest of it off my boards. As for Newchum, the first rule of netiquette is the same as in the meatworld: don't bite the hand that feeds you. Remember that you're not paying anyone here (that we know of) and everything you get is out of the goodness of our black little hearts. Being a little slitch isn't gonna make you any friends around here, and as said above, friends *are* your biz around here. -> Capital Idea "It's all just ones and zeroes."
CODE
Echo that, Capital. "A bad day" is no excuse for rudeness, not if you don't want your day getting worse. -> Diamond
CODE
Heh. Anyone else here convinced that Capital is some sort of SK or something? It's like the man never sleeps! -> Skeptic
CODE
Heh. Flattery will get you nowhere. -> Capital Idea "It's all just ones and zeroes."
CODE
You sure do have a way with people, Newchum. -> TheJuliana
CODE
Sure. Right. Look, I'm sorry. But I've been told off now for asking the question in the first place, and then for asking ways around, and then for asking specifics. How would any of you have worded it? Is there any way I could have asked this that would have made any difference whatsoever? -> Newchum
CODE
Huh. Looks like he *can* be taught. -> Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
Well, as sad as it is to say it, Neal's got a point. Basically you can never ask a question without people knowing that you're interested in the answer. The best way to do this would to either do the search yourself, or pay someone you trust to do it for you. The later tends to be more successful unless you're a specialist in the area: it's not what you know; it's who you know. -> Diamond
CODE
And that, I think, is the biggest lesson to take from this: outsourcing is the way the sixth world works. It's always a good idea to do what you can yourself--you're the one who really cares about whoever it is you're gonna find, and you're the only one you can really, truly trust not to betray you--but nothing beats a good specialist with a big payoff. Especially if you're trying to search the 'Trix or trying the ritual tracking thing, but even for beating the streets; A good PI will know people and places to look that you never would've thought of. -> Code Warrior
CODE
All that costs cred, of course. "You get what you pay for" applies just as much these days as any other. -> Skeptic
CODE
Morning chummers. A bit different from my usual fare, but I saw this on the radio a few minutes ago and thought it should be put here for posterity. A sign of our times, perhaps? -Blondie
CODE
What is the world coming to, when the world's muggers and thieves aren't safe? Truly a sick and twisted world we live in -> Code Warrior
CODE
Okay, you're saying I've pretty well got to find a specialist if I'm going to get anywhere. Cred's an issue, but if I've got to, then I'll figure out a way to bite the bullet somehow. But how do I get to know these people? How do I know if I can trust them at all? -> Newchum
CODE
The same way that you would find a mechanic, or a street doc, or a good bottle of Kentucky bourbon: you ask your friends or other people you know. Unless your agoraphobe who isn't a decker, you've already got a network of assets to use. Open your eyes, zurramato! You probably already have all the tools you need to do the task before you. The trick is to actually use them in such a way as to not realize that they are being used. -Hillbilly |
CODE
Decker's who don't get out? We don't have to get out much to drek you up. And speaking of noobs on here, just who the hell are you? -Neal the Code Barbarian |
CODE
The guy that gave you a huge increase from the Johnson on that job in Snohomish a couple of years back. Nice work on the trideo setup, by the way. Troll speed metal at 2:30 A.M. was a stroke of genius. -Hillbilly |

And you still owe me for that. Do you know how much hell I caught from that stunt? And I like Wild Turkey rye, on the rocks, waiting on me next time I'm at 'Beck's. -Whiskey River |
CODE
Holy Drek, that was you? And you were the Johnson...Holy Drek! I just knew something was up when you asked for that increase. You knew you could get it! -Neal the Code Barbarian |
CODE
Actually, no, I didn't know I could get it. But it never hurts to ask, to bring this full circle to the noobs post. -Hillbilly |

Four months later, they started another operation which they called "The Other Operation." In this racket, they selected another victim and threatened not to beat him up if he didn't pay them. One month later, they hit upon "The Other Other Operation." In this, the victim was threatened that if he didn't pay them, they would beat him up. | Dupe Drek, Different Day. What's your point? -> Neal the Code Barbarian |
CODE
The point, my dear barbarian, is that they're just about the exact same article, transplanted by 60 years and with the location changed. Looks like someone's getting lazy with their propoganda machines. -> Code Warrior
CODE
Wow, that's amazing. I don't know what's worse, the fact that someone's actually trying to make the Berkeley sprawl seem like an even *bigger* hive of scum and villiany, or that they're so drekking lazy about it. -> Skeptic
CODE
Wait, I'm not catching something here. Why would someone want to make the Berkeley sprawl look *worse*? It's already a fraggin' warzone, isn't it? -> Harold
CODE
Damage control by image control. In the past few years Berkeley's been attracting a lot of the young rebellious crowd, people flocking to the People's University with its promise of free college-level education, for those willing to help out the cause. Most aren't phased by the warzone; drek, some of 'em *come* for the warzone. Presenting the sprawl as some moral wasteland makes 'em think twice about coming, or maybe staying. -> Blondie
CODE
Do I detect a hint of bitterness? -> Diamond
CODE
Maybe wistfulness. -> Blondie

Oy. Just caught this on the wire this morning. Is it just me or does this just scream loopholes? -Blondie

Hm, could be an interesting exercise to spoof a download, swap it for a personafix BTL or something similar, and create your own brainpuppet zombie army. Of course you can basically do that now, but never by remote. Interesting indeed; I'll be looking further into this. Good find! ->Code Warrior
CODE
I can hack people's brains by remote now? Sweet drek, hurry it up you fraggin' corpers! ->Neal the Code Barbarian

Waste disposal is a big business, and a big cash cow for the Mob. Shiawase wants a piece of the pie now; announcing it at a shareholder meeting is as close to "we want it, and we're coming to get it" as you're going to get from a megacorp. -The Chromed Accountant "Its all about dollars and sense" |

Maybe, but its going to be a contest now. Even with some councilpeople in its pocket, the Mafia may be at a disadvantage now. Like CA said, announcing it at as much of a challenge as you're likely to get from a megacorp. -Mouse |

Hey all. I've been out of the Bay Area for awhile, and I've been really out of touch. Anyone have the last few weeks' of the Epitaph that they could post up here? -> Bay Bomber
CODE
Ouch, looking to "catch up" by reading the Epitaph? You poor bastard; my condolences. Here's a copy of last week's back issues are kept up at the University host. -> Blondie
CODE
Um, what? ->Neal the Code Barbarian
CODE
The "Cal Epitaph." It's basically a community-run obituary newsletter in the Berkeley/Oakland sprawl. See, there's basically no public services to speak of around there, so a few dedicated souls took up the slack. Right neighborly of them. -> Blondie
CODE
'cept they're fragging ghouls. Who else would spend all their time around dead people? -> Skeptic
CODE
Holy drek! When did they start including fragging *pictures*! Ugh, I did NOT need to see that during breakfast. Oh, and the Black Brothers? They're mages, not ghouls. There's like a dozen of 'em I think, all into voodoo or some other magic drek. That's how they track down names and stuff: call up the dead and ask for name, rank, and SIN. -> Bay Bomber
CODE
Some of 'em, yes. But there're also the city morticians and forensics people who quit when Saito told 'em to throw dead metahuman bodies in mass graves (read: dumpsters). One brought me back my poor Jenny; it's horrible what those evil thugs did to her, but at least she got a proper funeral, and her family could say goodbye. I've been helping all I can ever since. The pictures, I remember asking about that myself. Seems some of the bodies lately they can't ID properly, so they put up a picture in hopes of getting a family member to come by and match the face with a name. -> Freedom Fighter
CODE
Odd. Most of these have enough body for an open-casket funeral, at least judging by the face. Why can't they be IDed? -> Blondie
CODE
Something's "wrong" with the bodies. At least, that's what I heard from one of the Brothers. Most of the ways they have of IDing these people for some reason just don't work in those cases, so all they can do is put up a picture. -> Freedom Fighter
CODE
Weird. What would mess up a body so badly it can't be identified by fingerprints, dental records, etc, but still leave its *face* normal enough to be recognized? -> Blondie
CODE
The SINless usually don't have dental records. For them we're usually down to fingerprints and DNA, usually. -> Gullah Joe
CODE
Frag, I can't believe I'm sayin' this, but... I think I recognize one of the pictures. Page 10, the elf with the blond hair, thin face and high cheekbones. It looks like you guys found my sister. I was worried when I didn't hear from her for the last few weeks, but I didn't really think, I mean... Um, so, right. What do I do to confirm she is who I say she is? Old pictures, hair for DNA analysis? I should be back in town soon; I can get whatever soon. -> Bay Bomber

CODE
First off, my condolences. This is a job that should--must--be done, but that doesn't mean we have to like being the ones to do it. Now to practical matters. As was mentioned elsewhere, pictures are what we need for ID on this one; DNA and fingerprints won't work; it's all too scrambled to work. -> Gullah Joe
CODE
Scrambled? What do you mean? -> Bay Bomber
CODE
I mean that it's all scrambled. Her fingerprints are all gnarled-looking; they'll never match up to anything she had before she died. We thought in the beginning it was some kind of 'ware, but when we took her DNA, no two fingerprints came out the same. Someone messed her up good, and there's a dozen more bodies here just like it. -> Gullah Joe
CODE
Yeesh. Okay, taking this to PMs now -> Bay Bomber
CODE
So, any new sightings of the Berkeley Bat? And what *is* that drekking thing, anyway? -> Freedom Fighter
CODE
My cousin saw it flying over University Avenue two nights ago. Big black thing, he said, a guy with huge black wings growing out of its back and extending all the way down its legs. Me and him think it's a changeling, y'know, one of those comet mutants? -> Kid Karnage
CODE
Ha ha ha ha ha! Oh drek; first that cat woman porn star, and now Batman? Let me know when you guys see an anthropomorphic penguin walking around, all right? -> Salvo
CODE
I doubt it. It's too recent; the reports have been popping up in, what, the last two, three weeks? Maybe it's an escaped experiment or something. -> Elder
CODE
Well, whatever it is it might be holing up in Sather Tower. I haven't heard the carillon play in over a month. They say it's closed for repairs or something, but I don't see any crews around. Shame too; that carillon was wiz, even if the idea's like two hundred years old. -> Kid Karnage
CODE
It's definately an escaped experiment. Saito's been funding genetic experiments left and right, trying to find a "cure" for metahumanity. The doctors working on the project "volunteer" people off the street and screw with their genes, trying to turn them human. Most of the poor bastards die, but some end up like the Bat. -> Bay Insider
CODE
Oh come on. Saito's evil, but he's not stupid. Even he knows you can't "cure" metahumans; it's like "curing" a dog by turning it into a cat. -> Salvo
