What have people done for jetpacks in Shadowrun? As far as I know, they do not exist by canon, and as we all know, are awesome.
I thought about doing some kind of jumping assistance packs, with maybe limited gliding ability would work. Anyone have any suggestions for 'jump packs' or just plain old flying back packs? Cost, etc?

A small fixed-wing drone with a jet engine has a max load rating of 825, which is more than enough to carry an armored (meta)human. You can use the 1CF it has to install a datajack port so you can control it without a RCD, and it shouldnt be hard to rig up a backpack or harness to secure it to your person. Up up and away!.

It could be possible to construct one using Rigger 3 rules, or at least base it off a jet turbine, vector thrust engine for an UAV. Figure Body 1 for the chassis, would have to have at least 100kg to support a human.
Or you could constuct it using a medium VT UAV, which would allow you to use a Jet Turbine or Electric Fuel Cell powered engine. Fixed wing doesn't have the VTOL capability a true jetpack has.

Yeah, I know... but there isnt a canon small VTOL chassis, and strapping a dwarf-sized contraption to your back doesnt really appeal to me that much, aesthetically.

Better yet, strap a dwarf mage with high-Force Levitate to your back.

It depends greatly on the dwarf.

That is seriously, seriously a matter of opinion

How has anybody ever built a combustion powered jetpack and not had severe burns down the back of there legs.
Electric fuel cell would work if you had significant impact armour on your leggings

The problem with real jetpacks is fuel capacity. The generally only hold enough fuel to fly for 30 seconds. Add much more fuel, and it would just be too bulky.
If SR technology can overcome that problem, then any character with half decent Vectored Thrust Craft B/R skill should be able to make one. However, they would still be bulky. Modern jetpack are about dwarf size and rightfully so.
Jetpacks are cool, but, for style, you can't beat a personal helicopter that folds into your hat.

Edward, here's the details of real life rocket packs:
http://travel.howstuffworks.com/personal-jetpack2.htmThere's not a lot of precautions involved. Here's one rocket pack. The nozzles are on either sides of the hips, at the end of the insulated pipes.
http://www.goldbergarts.com/Images/rocket_pack_ntn.jpgOthers put the nozzles out on arms, beyond the shoulders:
