Full Version: 80s music that is about Shadowrun
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
Wounded Ronin
I just realized that "Running With The Night" by Lionel Richie is in fact about Shadowrun. This means that you can cue it as a musical interlude during your shadowrun games. This will bring the power of the 80s into the game, which means you'll need to deploy ninjas and elves with mullets.

Lyrics from http://www.lyricscafe.com/r/richie_lionel/lr011.htm

I have bolded the parts that pertain to Shadowrun; my comments are in italics.
QUOTE

The heart of the city street was beating
Lights from the neons
Turned the dark to day
We were too hot to think of sleeping
We had to get out
Before the magic got away

(when spellslingers get out of hand, you do want to get out)

We were running with the night
Playingin the shadows
Just you and I
Till the morning light
(We were running) oh, oh
Running with the night

You were looking so good girl
Heads were turning

(Clearly, she's The Face)

You and me on the town
Ooh, we let it all hang out
The fire was in us, we were running
We were gonna go all the way
And we never had a doubt
We were running with the night
Playing in the shadows

(damn PCs lacking subtelty and blatantly lugging around HMGs)

Just you and I
Till the morning light
Running with the night
We were so in love you and me
On the boulevard wild and free
Giving all we got, we laid it down
Taking every shot, we took the town

(read:  the narrator is a min-maxed cybered up troll with lots of karma and can thus chest block Barret rounds while destroying all his enemies.  Except for the magical ones.  See my first comment.)

We were running with the night
Playing in the shadows
Just you and I
Girl, it was so right
Girl, it was so right.

"Wounded Ronin"? Would that be a head wound then, hmmmm?

I feel strange and oddly dirty after contemplating the above.

Hmmm... This is more disturbing than I thought.

An exhaustive search of the internet has lead me to a vital fact: Running with the Night was realeased in 1983. SR in 1989.

This means that SR is infact a scifi/fantasy RPG based on a Lionel Richie song!!!!

oh the horror!!! eek.gif

I would say that Bad Religion has a lot props from me when it comes down to getting the mood of Shadowrun down.

Then you have DK a whole lot of punk, and stuff...
CountZero
Guns 'N Roses works well too, for getting some Shadowrun mood going.

I've always had a soft spot for Pat Benatar's Shadows of the Night.

QUOTE
We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end
You said - oh girl, it’s a cold world
When you keep it all to yourself
I said you can’t hide on the inside
All the pain you’ve ever felt
Ransom my heart, but baby don’t look back
Cause we got nobody else

Chorus:

We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end

You know that sometimes, it feels like
It’s all moving way too fast

(repeat chorus three times)

Use every alibi and words you deny
That love ain’t meant to last
You can cry tough baby, it’s all right
You can let me down easy, but not tonight

We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, you’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end

We’re running with the shadows of the night
So baby take my hand, it’ll be all right
Surrender all your dreams to me tonight
They’ll come true in the end

And now the hands of time are standin’ still
Midnight angel, won’t you say you will

Um...NO! nyahnyah.gif

I feel no need to apologize for liking some songs from a singer with a 4 1/2 octave range. smile.gif
Solstice
Kidney Theives is what we play during SR. That and any kind of ambient techno.

Also 80 electronica works well. KMFDM etc.

She was definitely cute, but she couldn't write to save her life.

Of course, the original is from '67, by Tommy James and the Shondells. biggrin.gif

QUOTE

I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
Watch you weave then breathe your story lines
And I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
Keep track of the visions in my eyes

While she's deceiving me
It cuts my security has
She got control of me
I turn to her and say

Don't switch the blade on the guy in shades oh no
Don't masquerade with the guy in shades oh no
I can't believe it!
Cus you got it made with the guy in shades oh no

And I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
Forget my name while you collect your claim
And I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
See the light that's right before my eyes

While she's deceiving me
She cuts my security
Has she got control of me
I turn to her and say

Don't switch the blade on the guy in shades oh no
Don't masquerade with the guy in shades oh no
I can't believe it!
'Cus you got it made with the guy in shades oh no
'Cus you got it made with the guy in shades oh no

Oh I say I wear my sunglasses at night
I wear my sunglasses at night
I wear my sunglasses at night
I say it to you now
I wear my sunglasses at night
I wear my sunglasses at night
I wear my sunglasses at night
I cry to you
I wear my sunglasses at night
I wear my sunglasses at night

One that always freaked me out was the beginning of Queen's Another One Bites the Dust:

Steve walks warily down the street,
with the brim pulled way down low
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet,
machine guns ready to go

Are you ready,
Are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat
Nikoli
Hence why I mentioned it.
Always freaked me out too, being a steve and all

I use Pink Floyd, Alan Parson's, and Spiro Gyro, not only are they good, but they have enough darkish songs, and I don't like lyrics interrupting my game. And there are alot (Especialy from Parson) who have songs, that while have lyrics, fit SR perfectly.
