Full Version: Recruitment for B&E - Not Neurosurgery

Hey all. I'm going to try to run a game again, maybe two. I will be accepting characters with the appropriate skills to pull it/them off.

One is a stealthy B&E run. The other is some investigation and possible wetwork.

It may help to form a team if people announce what kind of character type they are interested in playing in this thread. I am going to try something a little different and ask you to PM me a sample of in character action. What I should expect if I accept you. It seems recruitment threads usually get a bunch of I'm interested's, then some lagging characters, and then people lose interest in less than a month. Hopefully the writing requirement will help me pick some winners.

I would like to complete the B&E within 2-3 weeks, so if you can't post every day, this probably isn't the game for you. It's B&E, not Brain Surgery.

The other potential game is going to be more freeform. I have some objectives and no idea how they will be achieved. But I would like to have it be an active game.

Now that I've slotted off the few who scoped this out, here's how you will be making your character:

Priority or 125 BP. If you want Becks, let me know. I may even be generous and tell you somethings you are getting will not come into play.

No Raygun guns, no custom made weapons, but modified weapons should be ok. Cultured bioware that only comes that way is ok as long as it is under standard availability 8. Can use starting spell points to initiate - even with a group and ordeal discount. Up to 5 edges and 5 flaws, if the flaw won't come into play, don't bother with it. Can tell you right now, no day job edge, er, I mean flaw.

If you want to use something from some of the recent sourcebooks, you may need to run it by me.

But...
1 Short description of type of character in this thread
2 PM me here at Dumpshock with a short example of your characters style
3 I don't need character sheets or full backgrounds and don't want you to waste time on them if you don't get accepted

Thanks and I hope we have some fun.
kevyn668
What do you mean by an example of a a char's style? Do you want an IC narrative style thing or an "In [situation: X] my character will [action: Y]?"

Or just a quick rundown what kind of runner he/she is? (ie. "...5K a head. No women. No kids...")
tisoz
Characters style: how I can expect your posts to look when you play the game. So yes, a bit of prose. "An in character narrative thing."

The Quick rundown can get posted here, you can send the "narrative thing" to me privately or if you waant to try to shame everyone else, you may post it here.
kevyn668
LOL. (No, really, I laughed out loud.)

I doubt I could shame anyone around here.

Deadline?

I work better with one those. smile.gif
tisoz
What if I set a deadline and you are the only respondant?

QUOTE
kevyn668 says, "I'm in!"

I want to finish the run in 3 weeks. As soon as I get enough acceptable characters that can pull the job. I'd like to start this weekend, but I'll see what the response is.

[edit] It shouldn't take that long to post a character idea. It should not take long to get me a sample post. If you can't think up an IC type sample post for your character, how are you going to do it for real multiple times in the next few weeks? Myself, I've gotten into a couple games here and my character just wanted to express theirselves so badly, I was waiting for someone else to post so that I wasn't posting after myself. You don't need to post just to respond to someone or to be on track, but to show your character's perspective of the world. Hopefully, you'll get the job done, too, but let your PC's character come through.

enough rambling...[/edit]
Whizbang
Hmm...looks interesting. Too bad I don't have the time to do a character narrative justice right now. I'll see what I can do when I get in from work today. Guess I should ask you opinion on deckers. I've seen more than one GM would rather not mess with that, or prefer to simplify the rules.
Sphynx
1 Short description of type of character in this thread

Security Rigger - Electronics and Computers specialist who is the master of Building Security takeover.

Question though: in your world(s), is security handled more by Riggers or Deckers. If it's more Decker oriented, character may have to change professions. nyahnyah.gif
tisoz
Deckers are fine. My experience last time though is going to prompt me to not allow the optional ice suppression rules by allocating hacking pool. I'm going to treat cyberdecks like weapons, no totally custom jobs, but feel free to customize existing ones.

Are security systems controlled more by deckers or riggers and CCSS? My world tries to be cost effective as the rule of thumb. Which is going to cost more, and what do you get for the money? Do you already employ personnel for parts of your overall security that could help with building security? Such as, if you have a strong matrix presence and security deckers on staff, can they check on physical security, too? Or if you have several riggers running drones on the production line, can they monitor some security drones, too? Are you behind the SotA and have not employed CCSS yet? Hope that gives a hint.

For a bigger hint (and metagame knowledge) there is a description of the target in the Shadowrun forum under GM School: Course 1.

[edit] You can count on a few changes, however. I thought of a couple a bit after I posted, and I might tweak things a little to discourage metagaming.
Tashio
Magician Adept/ B&E Expert, 50/50 spilt adept powers/magic
kevyn668
Here's my IC bit. I can get stats and background to you tomorrowish. Just to give you an idea, he's pretty much a light sam w/ some electronics and social skills.

Hm. I'd love to try this out, but I've already got two potential games, and with trainning for the new job and a pick up in business for the old one I've certainly not the time to be posting more than once a day, particularly given my characteristic slowness. It's too bad too; I'd have loved to re-tweak Pierce for this one. smile.gif Next time, perhaps.

Response has not come. No characters submitted, 3 ready to submit. Super Bowl Sunday. Will not happen this weekend.
Drain Brain
Try this out for size...

Nathan Sanderson, Street based Hermetic mage. Chaos theory is the school of choice, with a very "nouveaux" outlook. For inspiration, take the "dude painting on the floor, smoking a cigarette" pic from the SR2 BBB.

Very little in the way of combat magic, focusing more on healing, detection and stealth stuff. In combat is more of a "mundane with a gun" since he was a prototypical youth - obsessed with action movies, likes the whole image of the gun bunny... just turned out to be magically active. Due to his outlook on life in general, he has opted to sacrifice some of his magical ability (yes, he did know it would happen before he did it) by taking a little cyber - Data/chipjack, image link, that sort of thing. Designed for easy access to hermetic library or map-softs (he has a lousy sense of direction).

Style example will be forthcoming...
tisoz
The four people who have sent me their sample posts should be enough to pull off the run. So get your characters in and we can start.

Anyone else wanting in needs to hurry and catch these guys.

Seymour Butts - Human Security Rigger/Decker

Description: Standing a tall 6'1", this Human looks like a 32 year old who still lives in his momma's basement. His attempt at a beard has a rough appearance, too long to be stubble, too short to be SantaClaus. Not the most in-shape person, he spends his evenings, after sitting all day in the back room of the company he worked for as a security rigger, sitting at his computer playing video games, and chatting online. He knows he's the best at what he does, there's never been anyone with his skill and expertise, and he's even proven it. His CMT-Avatar is a prized possession, something he earned when he went into a Shadowland site and got "hired" for a job. The reward was the CMT, not so much because he was given it, but he picked it up on the job. He doesn't make alot of friends, but that doesn't hinder his attitude any. Sometimes he sits in the local bar, and when he drinks a bit too much, tells a few possibly exaggerated stories, convincing everyone that he's all-that. Other times, usually after playing a roleplaying game with his friends, he goes to the bar and sits in a dark shadowy corner, analyzing everyone and thinking how easily he could take them all, and what sort of awesome shadowrunner or smuggler he would be. After all, he'd spent over 600 hours in the firing range to receive his ExpertMarksman award. One day he intends to use the weight set he got some christmas's ago, and work out to look as buff as he feels, and maybe lose the belly some, which sitting all day didn't help. With great effort, he squeezes his way out from behind a table, to head directly for another chair.

Sphynx, little over the 125 BP, and the no vehicle skill rigger is a first for me. smile.gif

kevyn668, finished so you can nag these other guys to hurry up.

Tashio, get me a background and you can start nagging, too. wink.gif
Sphynx
Yeah, 5 points over, but haven't gone through edges and flaws yet. I wait til I see what works best with the background. How much effort should we be putting into this background btw?
tisoz
Enough to have the conglomeration of skills and equipment make sense? Hopefully enough to give him some personality to roleplay.

Part of the writing requirement was to get past the, "My character does this - I"ll roll this for it." I'm hoping to get some feeling to accompany actions, how the character perceives the world as they are trying to accomplish actions.

But I'm not looking for hooks from your background, not in anything this short and hopefully, quick. If all goes well, and we decide to do a follow-up run(s), you can feel free to expand or tweak (anything that has not come into play yet) the background.
Sphynx
I've added the Edges/Flaws. I realize that a Sensitive Neural System and Jack Itch are going to cause problems, but I can accept those faults as I like what it does to the character. nyahnyah.gif
kevyn668
[nag] Hurry up, guys. [/nag] <taps foot, looks @ watch> smile.gif

Haven't fleshed out details on Contacts or Lifestyles. I didn't know if it was necessary. If it's needed I can whip it up. smile.gif

Only if you want to use them.
kevyn668
The details or the contacts?
tisoz
Sorry, posted that without looking. A little accustomed to having characters without contacts. But if you have an idea of how the contact acts, it needs noted or I may play it differently.
tisoz
I have most of the character stuff from you guys. Sent an email back to Drain Brain, I think, about addendums for gear and spells that didn't come through.

Waiting on Sphynx' background, maybe a name for his character.

You can choose to know each other or not. If so work out the relationships and post them or get them to me.

Are you 4 able to play over the weekend? If so, let's try to get the last of this prep work done tomorrow. If weekends are out, let's shoot for a Monday start.
kevyn668
So, who's in and what is he/she palying? I wouldn't mind assuming that we know eachother.

For the contact details, I'd rather just leave 'em as is. If this thing goes somewhere we (or you) can decide how they act, what quirks they have, etc. Is that cool?
tisoz
kevynn668 - Sloan Rourke
Sphynx - Seymour Butts
Drain Brain - Sandman
Tashio - Thyrian

Anybody else needs to get on the ball to be able to start with these guys, or play an NPC. We can do the contacts that way.

Weekends?
Tashio
weekends are good for me
Sphynx
I'm never around for the weekends, my apologies. I'll have my Background Description and Knowledges posted within a couple of hours of this post. smile.gif

Sphynx
Sphynx
Ok, everything but Contacts is completed. Seymour is ready to roll. nyahnyah.gif
kevyn668
Weekends can be hit or miss for me.
DrJest
Are you still taking submissions?
kevyn668
Sphynx, is your character's name really going to be Seymore Butts? biggrin.gif

QUOTE (DrJest)
Are you still taking submissions?

If you are on the ball. Looks like a Monday start, if you can get stuff done by then.
Sphynx
Yes Kevyn. nyahnyah.gif
Drain Brain
Just in case any of you decide, in game, that my character is an unpleasant, uncaring son-of-a-slitch, I wanted to let you all know: I'm personally a very nice man wink.gif - it's just the character who is a dick.

Tag phrases would be: "Whatever," "Don't Care," and "This isn't my "give a shit" face, man..."

Rough edged hermetic mage based loosely on the Chaos theorem from MitS, Nathan Sands (Sandman) based his own style of magic on personal experience, and it seems that "Not Caring" is what floats his metaphysical boat. Don't expect emotional scenes or niceness to old ladies - because he just doesn't care enough.

No freebies or pro-bono work, and he never does anything out of the goodness of his heart.

He's still bitter because when he grew up he really wanted to be a gun bunny. But then someone told him he had magical potential and it all went pear-shaped...

Note to the boss: I never fleshed out the lifestyles since a) I don't know where you're setting your game and b) even if I did, I have all the geographical knowledge of half a dirty housebrick, and would therefore be no good at making it convincing... wink.gif
DrJest
Lucas Carter. Ex-British intelligence, pseudo-Face type, specialises in infiltrating groups and reconnaissance. Cybered to include audiovisual recording. I have a NSRCG file, if you want me to send it to you for consideration.
Sphynx
Man, I'm so depressed that nobody's commented on my incredibly awesome description. I thought for sure someone would find it irresistable. nyahnyah.gif
tisoz
DrJest, send it on over.
DrJest
Doesn't seem to be a file attach for pm's... can you send me an e-mail addy?
kevyn668
DB: Thanks for clearing that up. Seriously. I've palyed here before with people that waited until we were in game before letting me know that his/her character is pretty much a jerk, (no offense) as opposed to the player. smile.gif

Since we're talking about character's personality, Sloan's your vanilla smartass thug.

Do we want to talk about what we're all doing here? For that matter, are in set in Seattle?

Sphynx: Great description. smile.gif

tisoz
I have it set in Seattle. If someone wants it set somewhere else, I may do so.

Sorry, DrJest, I thought I gave out the email. PMing it.
DrJest
NSRCG file sent smile.gif

In case Lucas makes it through selection:

Lucas is a recon/infiltration specialist; not in a technical, lockpicking sense, but in a pseudo-Face conman way. He believes in being as professional as possible while he is working. Although he will kill if necessary and even consider wetwork depending on the target, he prefers not to terminate without good reason. Particularly he objects to innocent casualties.
Drain Brain
Heh... innocent casualties? Hmm... "don't care..."

Should be interesting... Luckily I don't have any area effect combat spells! (in fact, I only have one combat spell period).
kevyn668
Innocent casualties? Read: Mobile Cover. wink.gif
Drain Brain
"Sorry lady, I thought you were a body shield... that'll teach you to lose some weight before walking at night..."

So, we're doing Seattle, B&E, with the following:

Mage (me)
Magical Adept (Tashio)
Thug (Kevyn)
CCSS Rigger (Sphynx)
Face (the miraculous and cool Doc-Jay, if he beats deadline)

That sound right? Okay, so assuming I haven't sodded it up, that gives us a nice odd number for things like democracy... so Yay or Nay for "previous familiarity" and, where "yay," is that as a pre-set team layout, or passing acquaintance?

You start...
kevyn668
I vote "yay" for previous familiarity.
Sphynx
Previous Familiarity is always better. You can't do a team-thing without it.
Drain Brain
Tashio? Doc-Jay? What say thee?

One more "Yay" and that's carried... assuming one of you is that Yay, are we going for established team?

I suspect we're starting today (at least that was the Boss' plan) so any thoughts on the matter would probably be good...
DrJest
I don't get a vote yet, had to resubmit a modified char smile.gif
tisoz
Sorry I'm a little late. I was putting it off awaiting DrJest's resubmission, then Monday turned unexpectedly hectic. DrJest, hurry up! wink.gif I don't think the changes, other than flaws, are going to have enough impact to hold everyone up. But get the final version in, the sooner the better.

There is an IC thread up To B&E or not to B&E and as soon as I'm done with this post, I'll get an OoC topic started.
