Hey all. I'm going to try to run a game again, maybe two. I will be accepting characters with the appropriate skills to pull it/them off.
One is a stealthy B&E run. The other is some investigation and possible wetwork.
It may help to form a team if people announce what kind of character type they are interested in playing in this thread. I am going to try something a little different and ask you to PM me a sample of in character action. What I should expect if I accept you. It seems recruitment threads usually get a bunch of I'm interested's, then some lagging characters, and then people lose interest in less than a month. Hopefully the writing requirement will help me pick some winners.
I would like to complete the B&E within 2-3 weeks, so if you can't post every day, this probably isn't the game for you. It's B&E, not Brain Surgery.
The other potential game is going to be more freeform. I have some objectives and no idea how they will be achieved. But I would like to have it be an active game.
Now that I've slotted off the few who scoped this out, here's how you will be making your character:
Priority or 125 BP. If you want Becks, let me know. I may even be generous and tell you somethings you are getting will not come into play.
No Raygun guns, no custom made weapons, but modified weapons should be ok. Cultured bioware that only comes that way is ok as long as it is under standard availability 8. Can use starting spell points to initiate - even with a group and ordeal discount. Up to 5 edges and 5 flaws, if the flaw won't come into play, don't bother with it. Can tell you right now, no day job edge, er, I mean flaw.
If you want to use something from some of the recent sourcebooks, you may need to run it by me.
But...
1 Short description of type of character in this thread
2 PM me here at Dumpshock with a short example of your characters style
3 I don't need character sheets or full backgrounds and don't want you to waste time on them if you don't get accepted
Thanks and I hope we have some fun.

What do you mean by an example of a a char's style? Do you want an IC narrative style thing or an "In [situation: X] my character will [action: Y]?"
Or just a quick rundown what kind of runner he/she is? (ie. "...5K a head. No women. No kids...")
tisoz
Feb 3 2005, 05:19 AM
Characters style: how I can expect your posts to look when you play the game. So yes, a bit of prose. "An in character narrative thing."
The Quick rundown can get posted here, you can send the "narrative thing" to me privately or if you waant to try to shame everyone else, you may post it here.

I doubt I could shame anyone around here.
Deadline?

I want to finish the run in 3 weeks. As soon as I get enough acceptable characters that can pull the job. I'd like to start this weekend, but I'll see what the response is.
[edit] It shouldn't take that long to post a character idea. It should not take long to get me a sample post. If you can't think up an IC type sample post for your character, how are you going to do it for real multiple times in the next few weeks? Myself, I've gotten into a couple games here and my character just wanted to express theirselves so badly, I was waiting for someone else to post so that I wasn't posting after myself. You don't need to post just to respond to someone or to be on track, but to show your character's perspective of the world. Hopefully, you'll get the job done, too, but let your PC's character come through.
enough rambling...[/edit]

Hmm...looks interesting. Too bad I don't have the time to do a character narrative justice right now. I'll see what I can do when I get in from work today. Guess I should ask you opinion on deckers. I've seen more than one GM would rather not mess with that, or prefer to simplify the rules.

1 Short description of type of character in this threadSecurity Rigger - Electronics and Computers specialist who is the master of Building Security takeover.
Question though: in your world(s), is security handled more by Riggers or Deckers. If it's more Decker oriented, character may have to change professions.
tisoz
Feb 3 2005, 01:56 PM
Deckers are fine. My experience last time though is going to prompt me to not allow the optional ice suppression rules by allocating hacking pool. I'm going to treat cyberdecks like weapons, no totally custom jobs, but feel free to customize existing ones.
Are security systems controlled more by deckers or riggers and CCSS? My world tries to be cost effective as the rule of thumb. Which is going to cost more, and what do you get for the money? Do you already employ personnel for parts of your overall security that could help with building security? Such as, if you have a strong matrix presence and security deckers on staff, can they check on physical security, too? Or if you have several riggers running drones on the production line, can they monitor some security drones, too? Are you behind the SotA and have not employed CCSS yet? Hope that gives a hint.
For a bigger hint (and metagame knowledge) there is a description of the target in the Shadowrun forum under GM School: Course 1.
[edit] You can count on a few changes, however. I thought of a couple a bit after I posted, and I might tweak things a little to discourage metagaming.

Here's my IC bit. I can get stats and background to you tomorrowish. Just to give you an idea, he's pretty much a light sam w/ some electronics and social skills.
[ Spoiler ]
Sloan's stomach grumbled as he walked into the McHugh's. It was 10.25. He waited in line behind an ork woman and her four whinning kids.
I always get stuck behind fraggin kids... He sighs.
The pimple faced boy behind the counter moves too slow for Sloan.
Stupid Boosteds...shoulda sprung for Wired so I could turn the damn thing off.
The woman and her pack take a solid 10 minutes to get their order straight. It's now 10.35.
Sloan steps up the counter as the woman shuffles off, each of her rugrats whinning about not getting the toy that comes with a Smiley Meal.
"Sorry ma'am. We ran out yesterday," the pimple kid says halfheartedly. He looks at Sloan without emotion. "Welcome to McHugh's," he says dryly. "Would you like to try one of our Value Paks?"
Sloan rolls his eyes and trys to be polite, "Uh, no thanks. I'd like a Bakon biscuit Pak...with, uh, soycaff."
The pimple kid blinks twice, "Sorry sir. We stopped serving breakfast at 10.30. How 'bout one of our lunch Value Paks?"
"But I was in line before 10.30. You don't have any Bakon Biscuits left?"
"Nope." The kid's eyes wander to the elf girl that's working the drive through window. His gaze lingers on her rear end.
Sloan sighs, "A'ight." He scans the menu for a few seconds. "Gimme the Double Royal with Cheese Pak. But I want a hashbrown instead of the fries."
The pimple kid manages to tear his eyes away from the drive through hoochie and looks pointedly at the clock on the wall to his left, "Uh...sorry, chummer. We don't have any hashbrowns. We're not serving breakfast anymore."
"Riiight, I get ya. No Breakfast. But don't ya have any hasbrowns left? Its only been 5 minutes." Sloan's stomach's grumbles again.
"Like I said, sir, we're not serving breakfast anymore."
Sloan takes a deep breath and hikes up his belt. He feels the reassuring weigth of the pistol under his jacket.
Why do I even carry this fraggin thing !?
He can hear the people in line behind him shift about impatiantly.
Sloan squares his shoulders. "Look, I know you don't get a special delivery of hashbrowns every morning. There's gotta be some lying around back there. Just throw one in with the fries."
Pimple kid's face is impasive.
"I'll pay extra," Sloan offers.
The pimple kid touches the earpiece that's linked to his mic. "I need a manager at Register 4, please. Manager to Register 4."
"You don't have to call the manager kid," Sloan smiles hoping to difuse the situation. "All you need to do is tell your buddy on the line to thow a hashbrown into the fryer."
The pimple kid blinks.
Sloan resists the urge to scratch the back of neck. The Boosteds were sensing his displeasure and longed to alievate the problem. Sloan then resisted the urge to bounce the kid's head off the counter.
The people behind him shifted again. There was some grumbling this time.
The manager arrives. His McHugh's uniform was crisp and pressed. It showed no signs of the stains that normaly grace the outfit as badges of...courage.
The Crisp human spoke in a cool, controled voice. "Is there something I can help you with sir?"
Sloan nodded. Finally. We're getting somewhere. "Yeah, I want a hashbrown with my Double Royal with Cheese Value Pak."
Crisp looks briefly at the clock on the wall to his left. "I'm sorry sir, but we stopped serving breakfast. Perhaps some fries or soyonion rings? There quite fresh right now." He flashes a trust me smile that would make a Johnson jealous.
Sloan's eyebrows furrow and the itch at his neck becomes more intense. "Right," He purses his lips for a second. "I know that you stopped serving breakfast. But I was in line before you stopped serving breakfast. I'm not trying bust your balls here, chummer, so I'm willing settle for a Double Royal with Cheese Pak as long as I get a fraggin' hashbrown instead of the fries. Get me?" Sloan leans across the counter ever so slightly and fixes Crisp with a nasty stare to let the man know he means business.
The grumbles behind Sloan get louder and more intense.
The Crisp manager takes a step back but doesn't back down. "Sir, I understand your situtation and I am trying to help solve the problem. Could you step over here for a second and we'll see what we can do?"
Sloan shrugs and sighs yet again, "Sure." He steps out of line.
Five minutes later, ignoring the stares of the people that were in line behind him, Sloan sat in a booth by himself eating his Double Royal with Cheese...and fries.

Hm. I'd love to try this out, but I've already got two potential games, and with trainning for the new job and a pick up in business for the old one I've certainly not the time to be posting more than once a day, particularly given my characteristic slowness. It's too bad too; I'd have loved to re-tweak Pierce for this one.
Next time, perhaps.

Try this out for size...
Nathan Sanderson, Street based Hermetic mage. Chaos theory is the school of choice, with a very "nouveaux" outlook. For inspiration, take the "dude painting on the floor, smoking a cigarette" pic from the SR2 BBB.
Very little in the way of combat magic, focusing more on healing, detection and stealth stuff. In combat is more of a "mundane with a gun" since he was a prototypical youth - obsessed with action movies, likes the whole image of the gun bunny... just turned out to be magically active. Due to his outlook on life in general, he has opted to sacrifice some of his magical ability (yes, he did know it would happen before he did it) by taking a little cyber - Data/chipjack, image link, that sort of thing. Designed for easy access to hermetic library or map-softs (he has a lousy sense of direction).
Style example will be forthcoming...

Seymour Butts - Human Security Rigger/Decker
Description: Standing a tall 6'1", this Human looks like a 32 year old who still lives in his momma's basement. His attempt at a beard has a rough appearance, too long to be stubble, too short to be SantaClaus. Not the most in-shape person, he spends his evenings, after sitting all day in the back room of the company he worked for as a security rigger, sitting at his computer playing video games, and chatting online. He knows he's the best at what he does, there's never been anyone with his skill and expertise, and he's even proven it. His CMT-Avatar is a prized possession, something he earned when he went into a Shadowland site and got "hired" for a job. The reward was the CMT, not so much because he was given it, but he picked it up on the job. He doesn't make alot of friends, but that doesn't hinder his attitude any. Sometimes he sits in the local bar, and when he drinks a bit too much, tells a few possibly exaggerated stories, convincing everyone that he's all-that. Other times, usually after playing a roleplaying game with his friends, he goes to the bar and sits in a dark shadowy corner, analyzing everyone and thinking how easily he could take them all, and what sort of awesome shadowrunner or smuggler he would be. After all, he'd spent over 600 hours in the firing range to receive his ExpertMarksman award. One day he intends to use the weight set he got some christmas's ago, and work out to look as buff as he feels, and maybe lose the belly some, which sitting all day didn't help. With great effort, he squeezes his way out from behind a table, to head directly for another chair.
PS. [ code ] doesn't seem to stay inside of a [ spoiler ]. I apologize for that being on the outside.

Enough to have the conglomeration of skills and equipment make sense? Hopefully enough to give him some personality to roleplay.
Part of the writing requirement was to get past the, "My character does this - I"ll roll this for it." I'm hoping to get some feeling to accompany actions, how the character perceives the world as they are trying to accomplish actions.
But I'm not looking for hooks from your background, not in anything this short and hopefully, quick. If all goes well, and we decide to do a follow-up run(s), you can feel free to expand or tweak (anything that has not come into play yet) the background.

Just in case any of you decide, in game, that my character is an unpleasant, uncaring son-of-a-slitch, I wanted to let you all know: I'm personally a very nice man
- it's just the character who is a dick.
Tag phrases would be: "Whatever," "Don't Care," and "This
isn't my "give a shit" face, man..."
Rough edged hermetic mage based loosely on the Chaos theorem from MitS, Nathan Sands (Sandman) based his own style of magic on personal experience, and it seems that "Not Caring" is what floats his metaphysical boat. Don't expect emotional scenes or niceness to old ladies - because he just doesn't care enough.
No freebies or pro-bono work, and he never does
anything out of the goodness of his heart.
He's still bitter because when he grew up he
really wanted to be a gun bunny. But then someone told him he had magical potential and it all went pear-shaped...
Note to the boss: I never fleshed out the lifestyles since a) I don't know where you're setting your game and b) even if I did, I have all the geographical knowledge of half a dirty housebrick, and would therefore be no good at making it convincing...
