Full Version: Shamanistic Aspects learning Metamagic

Unfortunatly there's a lot of rather unclear information about exactly what an Aspected Shaman can learn. Most confusing though is Metamagic; it's stated that all magic types can learn it, but Aspected Shaman's are restricted to some specific areas as opposed to Conjuring/Sorcery aspected mages. Because of he way Metamagic is worded it seems clear Shaman's should be able to learn some of it, but exactly what are they allowed to learn?

Well that depends. What are you aspeceted to? Can you astrally perceive? project?
Summon? cast spells? What is it exactly that your character does do specifically?

I think he's referring to Shamanistic Aspected Magicians, the ones that can only summon spirits and cast spells they get totem boneses for.

Metamagics

well if you can cast and conjure, and perceive, you can take pretty much all of the metamagics. But some will be of more use than others. Invoking and channeling are always good (especially if you stay in your favored terrain). Centering would still be good. Shielding is good for protection. masking is always nice .. .etc etc.....

If you can cast and conjure and oercieve, you can take most of the metas, just decide what you like.

If you can use any portion of a metamagic technique, you can learn and use that metamagic technique in that fashion.

For instant, an aspected shaman of Cat can use techniques like Shielding, Masking, and Centering just fine, but can only use Quickening to quicken spells they can cast, and Invoking to conjure great form spirits allowed by their aspect.

In essence, you'd be hard pressed to find any metamagics that you can't learn, unlike aspected Sorcerers, Conjurers, or even Adepts who have a more limited selection since, for example, a Sorcerer can't use Conjuring at all and thus can't learn techniques like Invoking or Channeling.

I don't know, Doc. By that criterion, an Enchanter could learn any metamagic technique for the sole purpose of building the foci that go along with it.
Ol' Scratch
You don't require (let alone use) the metamagic technique to create a focus anymore than you have to know how to program a Black Hammer utility to build a cyberdeck. Any enchanter can create any focus even if they can't use it, unless the specific type of focus requires it (such as an Anchoring Focus).

And even in those cases, there's nothing stopping them from learning those techniques for that purpose. They still can't use it for anything else if they couldn't normally use a given aspect.
Ancient History
Uh, that's a negatory Doc. It's fairly explicit that to build certain foci-a shielding focus, say, or an anchoring focus-you need to know the associated metamagical technique.

Yes, I was editing just as you posted it. In any case, it's exactly the same as an aspected shaman learning Quickening in those cases. They can still only use the metamagic technique if it falls within their normal abilities; an Adept Enchanter, for instance, couldn't use Shielding to provide an improved form of spell defense, but there isn't anything stopping him from learning it for the purpose of enchanting if he really desires it.

Works for me.

And therein lies the power of enchanting. Everyone's friend...
