I think magic _interferes_ with nuclear reactions.
There just isn't enough time in that tiny fraction of a second for any kind of signifigant effect. A nuclear plant operates for years and years. That is plenty of time. Particularly if the effect builds on itself over time. That would guarantee that any plant will eventually have problems. However, 40+ years of research may well have found magical ways to clean the interference buildup. On a more on-topic tack, do you think there is still a "spell gap" between the NAN and the UCAS/CAS? I know there would have been in the beginning, but Hermetic magic is largely scientific, and the "white world" (read as Corporations) is really good at figuring out science stuff. I would not contest the NAN still having the best shamans, but I bet corporate-supported Hermetic mages are just as good now. I wouldn't be that surprised if the big surprise in SR5 would be the CAS/UCAS coalition invasion of the NAN in 2078 or so. |

It's not necessarily a question of what we can "imagine" due to first hand experience -- it's a question of actual mathematical statistics. Less than 1% of the population, pre-VITAS. VITAS skips them, and kills half of everyone else? Congrats. You're now less than 2% of the population. Whoopty doo. And remember -- this 2% stat is assuming every single Native American was (1) interested in being a front-line combatant in this race war, (2) physically capable of being a front-line combatant in this race war, and (3) in a position to be a front-line combatant in this race war.
In a modern culture that's just not enough people to take over any sizeable chunk of a continent this freakin' big. |

True. But just for the sake of playing devil's advocate, your 1% is based on census data and current definitions of "native american" which is, what, 1/4 ascestry or more? 1/8? I honestly don't know. IIRC NAN accepts those with 1/64 ancestry or more, so this could increase the numbers significantly. Further, you're assuming that every native american fights. A fine assumption for this extreme-case example. What percent of the US population is currently, actively enrolled in the military? |

Critias, who were you quoting when you put "imagine" in quotation marks?
To clarify, I wasn't taking a side on this somewhat polarized issue, just trying to recap as someone who stepped in five pages into it. Once again, I'll ignore your sarcasm. I agree that it doesn't make sense, if one is inclined to be concerned about applying "actual mathematical statistics" (is there another kind?) in determining the fictional history of a fantasy world. I am not. Well, not usually, anyway. :) Perhaps you can clarify for me, because on first reading your last comment, it only seems to support the first point of my recap. It's a point that has already been made clearly. Are you saying that you disregard any fantastic rationalizations other than VITAS? Are you saying that one should not imagine such an unrealistic turn of events because the real world statistics don't support it? Please help me understand where you're going with this, I'd hate to think you were just repeating yourself to get the last word again. |
