Full Version: DNA/DOA Conversion
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
Omer Joel
Introduction

DNA/DOA was the first adventure ever published for Shadowrun, and therefore has several problems - such as a tendancy towards dungeon crawls - but it still deserves a conversion to SR4 rules. The conversion is that of statistics and rules alone, not of plot and adventure text, and does not seek to undermine WizKids' copyright of this material.

Part 1: Pre-Generated Player Characters
Character statistics and gear were re-generated with 400 BPs while attempting to present the spirit of their SR1 statistics and descriptions in DNA/DOA.

there's a reason +2 was the only constant in the format i presented =P the specialization bonus in SR4 is always +2 wink.gif otherwise looks good =D

Corrected.

Going from memory, those conversions look quite good Omer - and it seems you did a good job in making the characters very playable too.

One q though, I may have misunderstood...but isn't it Logic+Intuition in free Skill Points (i.e. 16 = 4 skills at rating 4), and not Building Points?

Yep! It is Knowledge Skill Points that are free (usable on a one-to-one cost basis), and anything over that uses BP (and BP costs).

Gah! DNA/DOA barely even counted as a SR1 adventure. It was more like a late 80s AD&D dungeon-crawl with some SR bits grafted on late in production. Of course, being the first, there wasn't really any point of reference for the author.

It IS an SR adventure, except for various D&D bits still remaining in it (the Aztechnology facility). You have alot of complications, a possible mole in the team, alot of politics; it has redeeming features, but it takes a good GM to weed the D&D out. Next I'll convert Silver Angel, which is far more SR.

EDIT: On a second thought, Dreamchipper would be my next conversion. I love that adventure smile.gif Silver Angel next, followed by Mercurial.

Part 2: NPCs
The NPCs were converted semi-directly to SR4 while attempting to keep them both as close to the original as possible and on a similar power level; SR4 and 2070 elements were included as nescery.

Yep! It is Knowledge Skill Points that are free (usable on a one-to-one cost basis), and anything over that uses BP (and BP costs).

Thanks for the clarification, I stand corrected smile.gif

More to come - I still have to convert the Critters and deal with specific issues (i.e. the "Ronnie Bean" and how it would mesh with the wireless world, various tests and tasks, and the ultra-high nuyen.gifnuyen.gifnuyen.gif rewards).

Great work. I am new to this forum. It is absolutly some of the best SR stuff out there thanks in part to people like Omer Joel.

Nice conversions. I have some mixed feelings about the adventure due to some aspects that seem like hardcore railroading (in my opinion). Heh I still have a copy of it though.

Hi all,

I just saw this thread the other day and it was exactly what I was looking for! I also just bought Hero Lab and so I have stuck all of the NPCs from this thread into it and generated a portfolio to run the adventure. It worked like a charm!

Anyway, if anyone is interested, I can share the Hero Lab portfolio, just let me know.

First of all: Nice work! I'm glad someone necromanced this thread, since I'd never seen it back in the day. This is one of my favorites, possibly for some of the same reasons that some people hate it. Maybe I'm just old.

Gah! DNA/DOA barely even counted as a SR1 adventure. It was more like a late 80s AD&D dungeon-crawl with some SR bits grafted on late in production. Of course, being the first, there wasn't really any point of reference for the author.

There's a reason it looks like that; take a look at the writing credit. That's the same Dave Arneson that helped create D&D in the first place. And, as you noted, there really wasn't a reference point on what an SR adventure might look like.

Nebulus, I'd love a copy of that portfolio. Email it to the addy in my profile, if you'd be so kind. Thanks!!

I would love a copy of the portfolio as well Neb! and this is just too cool btw.

Neat, thanks for the necromancy.

Perfect timing on the thread Necromancy!

This is one of my favourite adventures. I have played it in every edition of SR and now It's getting its 4th edition outing. Yes it’s a dungeon crawl at its heart, but it’s got some great elements (the catalyst spray is genius). This time however I’m doing it a bit different and just using elements of it. I have already set the player characters up via Food Fight; this leads them into Dream Chipper. Among the chaos of Dream Chipper they find details of an abandoned extraction and decide to carry it out for themselves to discover who set them up in the first place. Except the DNA/DOA sewer/dungeon doesn’t lead to an Aztec facility it leads to the Renraku Arcology......Just in time for the shutdown!

That sounds like a lot of fun. I'm confused, though: are you playing in the 2050s, or an alternate timeline? Or is your Arcology just shutting down AGAIN?

Ignoring any official time line, but its 2050s for the purposes of the game I’m running (yes that has issues using 4ed rules). Basically I have a new group and I wanted them to experience what I consider the classics so its kind of a SR Montage (if that’s the correct word) of all the best bits to take them up to the newer stuff, all glued together with a plot of my own devising.

They have no knowledge of SR timeline so it’s working quite well so far, I have one veteran player so I’ve had to mix things up quite a bit so he can also enjoy it as a new experience. Basically because of the way I set the runners up at the start they are out for revenge, so rather than getting paid to investigate, each step they take themselves brings them closer to finding out who set them up in the first place and more importantly why.. The answer of course lies in the Archology which will conveniently shut down while they are inside. They will have two options. Delve deeper and discover what they have been searching for or abandon the archology before they become trapped and possibly never discover why they were set up.

Hi all, I've uploaded the Hero Lab Portfolio to 4shared...

Enjoy! and please let me know when you find problems and errors, so I can fix them.

Cheers

wow I thought I was one of the only people who remembered that one. Even with 1st ed it needed to be jiggled a little otherwise it was much to like D&D with mahcine guns. Then again the idea of doing Vault of the Drow with a minigun is pretty good too.
