Full Version: The Vigilia Evangelica

So did the author who wrote the description of the Roman Catholic Church's secret vaults, whats in them and the clandestine order that protects them want to hint at the "Horrors" or is that wishful thinking on my part? More importantly as I would like to work the Vililia Evangelica into my game any one have ideas whats been going on with them sense 2064 and the release of the document written by Praetor Pedro Amato?

One can assume that the good Praetor is very dead by 2070. I would also think that the fact that such secret vaults exsist with information from previous magical cycles would have greatly surprised/upset both Tir's and many a Great Dragon who thought they had cornered the market on such knowledge. Then there is also the question of how corps or national goverment would react as well.

Any how just looking for ideas as Shadowrun 4th edition has definitely got nothing in print about such at this time.

I've got a very clear idea of where I want to take the Vigilia, how its taken to the changes in the Sixth World between 2064-70, and the breach of its secrecy.

There are no specific plans for it to feature in any of the books currently scheduled for release though. However, I am hoping to do a Vigilia-related short story for Holostreets' subscription service when its up and running (and my currently swamped schedule clears) and I do have longer term plans for it to be used in an upcoming plot.

Considering that the last time I made such plans it took 3 years to realize them and have Winternight play its endgame, I'll try to post some material as soon as I get a break in my schedule.
Stormdrake
Thanks Synner. Hope Fanpro lets you get some of it into print sooner than last time.

Whats "Vililia Evangelica"?
Ancient History
The Vigilia Evangelica, a secret order of the Catholic church, who have gathered and hoarded the books of blasphemies, necromancies, and magic. The curators of the Vatican's "Black Library," which contains tomes only the Pope himself may read. This trove gave the church foreknowledge of the Sixth World, and its collection is broken into four massive, hidden storehouses across the length and breadth of the globe.
Deamon_Knight
AH, is this in Threats 2 or somewhere else as well?
Ancient History
The stories about the Vatican's Black Library have made the rounds for centuries...some of them are even true. As far as SR is concerned, you should check out Threats 2 and Shadows of Europe.
SL James
... and Loose Alliances, which actually details the Vigilia.

Thanks!

"Brotherhood of the Rose" with Sean Connery takes place in one of the black libraries during the "Dark Ages". I believe they even reference the movie in "Loose Alliance". In any case would seem to lend itself to some pretty good horror runs.
Ancient History
The book, Stromdrake. It references the book. The movie, as much as I like any movie with Sean Connery, was a pale fascimile on serious meds by comparison.

Ooo, which ones are true?

AH,
I stand corrected they do reference the novel, not the movie. I have never read the book so the movie is what popped to mind. Probably should go dig up a copy for flavor.

very rarely do the movie give the book full justice. the lotr movies are close, most will say perfect. it comes down the the media mostly. a situation you can use page after page setting up and describing have to be taken care of fast in a movie or it will be to long to watch...

wobble.gif Those that call them perfect need to talk to my husband & his father. (Weeks after every release, hashing & re-hashing what they got wrong-elves at Helm's Deep? The horror!)

I would have to agree - always use the book if you have a choice. ON the other hand, if you're just looking to set a mood, a movie playing in the background is kinda nice.

I've always been curious about these Vatican libraries. Are there references anywhere else (not necessarily SR)?
FrankTrollman
The Vatican Library is of course a real thing, here's a brief history of it.

The vatican has the second largest collection of pornography on Earth, which is pretty cool.

meh. i can deal with elves. it didn't happen at all in the books, but it's no biggie. and of course the rest of the rangers never came in the movie... that was kinda odd too. but what really ticked me off is what they did to Faramir.

Who has the largest?

The Library of Congress.

The Vatican has a copy of every item specifically banned. The Library of Congress has a copy of every work with a registered (rather than implied) copyright.

The Vatican has been around for a long time. By some reckonings it is the longest running human organization that is still extant. And that means that at some point or another they've gotten around to banning just about anything. But the LoC of the United States has more pr0n.

i will not write a run in which someone steals the Vatican's pr0n collection. i will resist the temptation. i will... ah, hell, it's not like i have the time to write it anyway.

Frag the Elves. They left out Tom Bombadil. That is unforgivable.

That's beautiful and simply has to figure in the first SR4 game I run...

Mr Jhonson has a strong italian accent, has a pious air, wears obvious religious symbolism, and speaks with a fiery christian rhetoric. He speaks of the retrieval of forbidden books, books possibly spanning back millenia or more, having been stolen from a great library during transit. The pay is good, on the one condition that nobody opens the crates or views the materials.

Knowing my players, they'd probably try to look in the crates (immensely tough sealed containers which are locked three times, equipped with deadly ICE, and astrally warded) even before the fight with the gangers that stole them was over.

I just want to thank everybody who has mailed me. I won't promise anything for now because my plate is way too full as it is, but I'll try to get back to the Vigilia as soon as I have the time. It's very cool and gratifying that this number of people are still interested in the Vigilia.
Stormdrake
Well I introduced the plot hook for the Vigilia Evangelica into my game over the weekend. Whole group took off with it like a shot. Bunch of horror nutz just like me I am afraid, lol. However, the interesting thing was what my wife had to say afterwards. She has a degree in archeology and just went on and on about how the Roman Catholic Church probably has the largest and widest collection of artifacts from pre-Christian cultures any were in the world. Pointed me in several directions for ideas on what they may have. Thing that really upset her was that much of the artifacts that the church may have collected over the years is almost assuredly useless in research do to lack of proper documentation. From the game master point of view this is great. The church has a bunch of items that they think may be dangerous but have no clue what it is or even were it is from. Mana level gets high enough something that was forgotten down in those vaults may “wake up” really annoyed, lol.
Synner
Actually that's happened once before, if you look carefully (oops..) nyahnyah.gif

Knowing most Shadowrunning groups, a run in the library will probably turn out like this. wink.gif
Stormdrake
Another idea would be to have the libraries have records of sites were ancient evil had been imprisoned. Think "Dominion" the precursor to the "exorcist". The barried church in that movie would be very cool to build a run around. The runners could be hired by the church to stop the site from being dug up or the runners could be the ones doing the digging and bumping heads with the Vigilia Evangelica.
