I find most gun ownership type problems difficult to understand because I live in a country where guns are not something that many people own and those who do have them illegally.

I just assume that a smartlink is a more specialised tech which is hard to licence but not really that expensive to implement.

Are they going to want Joe Average to have a gun which can be used to commit crimes with high accuracy? Are they hell.

Well, when I said it is a fringe market, I was thinking in my head most weapons, but left that part out.

I.e. - Assault Rifles, Combat Shotguns, and any Automatic weapon are not generally for home defense.

As for ownership, Gun Ownership in the UCAS and especially in the CAS, and likely in all of North America is fairly heavily rooted and will not be changed (except maybe Cali)
The question becomes, if this person tries to stop a crime with their conceal and carry pistol do I want them hammering off rounds in the general direction of the target or more accurately.
If someone is commiting a crime, chances are missing a shot will merely force them to take another.
If someone is trying to prevent a crime, missing a shot can let the criminal shoot back, or cause civilian casualties.
Which would you pick, slightly better protection against criminals for greatly increased risk or vice versa?

Keyboard shortcuts are faster than a mouse in some cases, but not always. Either way, in the comparison with smartlinks they are slower always. However, I agree that your counterexample is more valid.

A number of people have mentioned that the average home owner wouldn't go for smartlink because you'd have to boot up your comlink and put on glasses.

Let me put this to you...

I never turn my cell phone off except when I get on a plane - its always on, all night long. I need to put my glasses on or I wouldn't be able to tell an intruder from my pet cat.

I'm amazed at how much attention this post has recieved. Thanks to all for your comments.

There is also the argument, for homesafety of smartlink guns, because you can set up smartlinks to only recognize your key, that happens to be your dni input or palm induction, so no kiddo's shooting thier own face off.

While as far as the game is concerned smartlinks improve your shooting ability.
The great control on could have over firearms that have smartlinks is something to think about.

A gun with a smartlink could be set up to lock itself down if attempting to fire at a member of the authorities. Making smartlinked guns useless in criminal action until hacked.

With the sort of control you can exert over the use of a weapon with a smart-link and just looking at the way companies try to control their intellectual properties today I would say that every could would of course be smartlinked when sold to Joe Sinner.
but mostly to control what he can and can't do with it.

To bad kids tend to know more about Comps (and Smart Guns are Comps to) than their parents, and i don't think this will change till 2070 so the kid still can shoot his own face of since he prolly had to help his dad set it up devil.gif
