You guys, indirectly.

Because some of us like Shadowrun's setting so much we keep our games "canon," or "pure," or whatever you want to call it. Or, rather, we try to. And being told just enough to give us a massive plot hook (but not enough to actually do anything with it, for fear of then having to retroactively change history once the timeline catches up to our own games) has a lot of people kind of pissy.

I don't get it... who are you insulting? And is eating annoying people such a bad thing?

edit: Oh, you're insulting the freelancers. And how do you freelance for Shadowrun, anyway? Writing for Shadowrun seems pretty specialized; it seems to have little application outside of writing for fantasy or cyberpunk.

Uhm, I didn't get Critias' post as insulting, even though I don't necessarily agree with him.

To put it another way -- for some of us, our complaints with System Failure weren't about what was written, but rather what wasn't.  There are a ton of details that we don't have, that make it difficult, if not impossible, to advance the timeline without significantly glossing over some major, major, events.

I suspect that, if the 2065-2070 years had been spelled out in loving and intricate detail (or even if there'd been a simple timeline describing major events that occurred in those years), somebody else would be complaining that they were "boxed in" and it "wasn't fair that these events were simply mentioned without giving players the opportunity to play through and affect them."

In short, no matter what was done, it was going to piss somebody off. If SR4 had been the stuff of SL James' dreams, causing him to focus his considerable energy and free time (when he wasn't playing, of course) toward evangelizing from the rooftops about how wonderful it was instead of being insulting and vulgar about how much he hates it, then somebody else would have popped up to take his place with their own slate of complaints. It's human nature. Some folks aren't happy unless they're complaining about something. (And that's not to say that people don't have valid complaints. But there is a subset of humanity that seems to draw energy from bitching and negativity, and sometimes it's hard to pick out their legitimate complaints from their efforts to do this.)

You can't please everybody. The goal is to please most people, piss off as few as possible, and bring in new blood. And as long as the game is selling well, that suggests it's going in the right direction.

Ok folks... I'm gonna close this thread and some of it's fun antics down. James will be taking a vacation for 2 weeks, the rest of you, please behave.

Feel free to restart the thread minus the insults, flames, and accusations.
