I know this topic has already been discussed but I can't make up my mind!
So, do you or don't you?
Cheers,
Max

Oops! It came out a little weird.
Does anyone know what happened?
How can I edit the poll's choices?
Cheers,
Max

My feeling is pistols are only SA, so you're really only looking to remove the "2nd shot" penalties. Not a game break for my group, cause you're concealability goes up.
I make it a role-playing issue since most places don't allow firearms.

Most people coming from earlier editions will be inclined to ignore the description of gas vents in favor of remembering how they've worked since 2nd Ed, but the SR4 RAW only says they can be mounted on machine pistols, submachineguns, assault rifles and machineguns.

In a normal game, I just allow a PC to add an underbarrel weight or custom grips for a small fee. Recoil on pistols never meant much in SR3, and I'm inclined to let that tradition continue.

I agree with you. (TinkerGnome)
I also wanted to know how everybody felt about this issue. I like making informed choices.
There is the Ares Viper Slivergun, as well...

I guess the idea of doing it, under SR rules, just seems pointless...I would allow it, I guess, if they didn't want to take one of the other recoil options and insited it was "gas venting"
I mean, oh well.
But they'd be being dumb.

Meh. It's the 301-302 reference that makes me think there is something wrong (either way) about what can and can't mount gas-venting.

Which reference is this?
Shotguns have a barrel mount, and there's even an autofire-capable shotgun this time around, but they're not on the list of things that can get gas vents, either.

Slivergun has a built in sound suppressor, which takes up the barrel mount. That precludes the use of a barrel-mounted gas vent system.

In SR4 integral accessories don't take up mounts.

It shouldn't be brought in. You see, in the grim darkness of the near future, there is only corporate war. It is a dark age for the corporatocracy of man, and much of the old technology has been lost to legend. Or recovered and brought back 50 times as advanced as before.

I don't see it having much effect on pistols either way so let them have it, besides since real SA guns have it, why not let pretend ones have it? I know Austere Emancipator linked a Glock C (C is for compensated) in one of the previous threads that I'm too lazy to look up, so yeah, not a big deal.
Now putting one on a shotgun on the other hand...

I voted yes, but not for the reasons specified. I could care less what the book says, really. It makes sense, it's physically possible here in the really-real world, and frankly, it's not a game breaker. I'd at least allow it on a trial basis. It doesn't matter much, it makes the player happy, and I can always find a way to trick the player into losing them if it causes problems.
In a perfect world that I don't live in, maybe I could even talk to the player about the problem, if one arises, and the player would agree to ditch the guns.

My Mossberg 835 came with a ported over bored turkey barrel would that qualify as a gas vent?
Like as if Samurai_Jake III shadowrunner in 206? picked it out of his granddads footlocker in the attic would it have to be houseruled?

I would say that it does. Gas Vents ought to be available as both built-in (non-removable) and barrel-mounted (removable). I would (and do) just ignore the "gas vents can't be removed" wording.

Why would you need a gas vent for only a -1 modifer?

In action.
http://www.glock.com/compensator.htmWhy for only a -1 modifier? So you can squeeze off the second round per phase without the 1 die penalty I guess.
Rooks
Mar 25 2006, 06:13 PM
I know that but wouldn't it be lot easier to have something else to compensate for that -1 modifier? I mean its a barrel add on too so you can't add a silencer to it better off to put maybea stock or as previously suggested custom grip or underbarrel weight since those confer a 1 point of recoil compensation
Raygun
Mar 26 2006, 08:29 PM
I believe underbarrel weights take up the underbarrel mount, so in that case, you're just trading one mount for another. There may be something useful you need to attach to that underbarrel mount (lights, lasers, etc...).
Custom grips giving a -1 recoil compensation effect is pretty rediculous, IMO. I understand that a custom grip allows a person to interface with the gun better (more comfortably), but as far as recoil compensation goes, that's going to make next to nil difference in all but possibly small calibers that recoil minimally anyway (like .22 LR). So there's the argument that this benefit shouldn't even exist. (But since it does, there's really no good argument against doing it that way.)
Silencers should offer some recoil compensation benefits all by themselves. As they're designed to quickly alleviate pressure that causes both noise and recoil, they should affect both. The way I see it, "Silencers" offer -1 recoil compensation while "Sound Suppressers" offer -3 recoil compensation.
Here's a few more pictures of pistols with "gas vents". Glock and
Taurus (those holes under the front sight are "gas vents") are about the only two mass producers off the top of my head that offer (non-removable) compensators. Compensators are most often installed on open competition pistols. A company called
Evolution Gun Works manufactures many different compensators for the 1911 which can be installed in one of three ways, two of which are semi-permanent (meaning the compensator can be removed, but not easily; it's intended to be installed and left on). Here's an example of an
open competition 1911. Top row, third from the left is the best pic of the compensator. Here's another
open gun.
