Pg. 311 says a gas vent can be built into machine pistols, SMG, assault rifles, and machine guns.
Pg. 307 says the Hammerli 620s light pistol has an integral gas-vent.
Is the Hmmerli an exeption or can pistols be fitted with gas vent systems?
If the former, is there any way to get recoil compensation on an Ares Viper Slivergun?

Gas-vent systems can be built into machine pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, and machine guns. Installing them takes up the barrel mount and requires an Armorer + Logic (8, 1 hour) Extended Test; once installed, they cannot be removed. Weapons already equipped with a built-in gas-vent cystem cannot be equipped with an additional gas-vent system. |
I believe it's simply saying that for purposes of a weaponsmith retrofitting a weapon in-game that only machine pistols and above can accommodate a retrofit because of the space requirements of an aftermarket GV system.
I do not believe it is referring in any way to integral gas vents not being possible in smaller weapons.
Off-topic: Hey Ryan, this is Brad. Say hey to Aaron for me. He mentioned he was going to be running SR4 sometime soon. Hope you guys have fun! =)

Also, to actually address your question... page 301 in the black box on the right mentions...

Mounts: Show where a weapon accessory can be attached to a weapon: underbarrel, barrel, or top-mount. Only one accessory can be attached to a particular mount. Integral accessories (those that come with the weapon) don't take up mount locations. Hold-outs don't have mounts. Pistols (including machine pistols) have a top mount and a barrel mount. SMGs, all rifles, and heavy weapons have a top mount, barrel mount, and underbarrel mount. Projectile weapons can only be equipped with a laser sight or a smartgun system. |
So, while the Slivergun does have a barrel mount, it appears to be ineligible for a retrofit GV presumably because of it's "small" size and the relatively "large" GV attachment.

This has been argued to death here. Check-out SR4.131 where it excludes Pistols from having gas-venting.
Oversight or not-yet-implemented no one is for sure.

That's odd... I'd expect a pistol to have an underbarrel mount, but be restricted to laser sights... that's the most common place for them in current day anyway...

I believe you meant to say SR4.311, not SR4.131. =)
As written it doesn't exclude pistols from having integral gas-venting, it just excludes the retrofit.

It doesn't even exclude the retrofit. While it doesn't include light pistols and heavy pistols on the list, that is not an explicit exclusion.
I see no reason why a slivergun shouldn't be able to accept a gas vent 3.

Now I am more confused, lol.
So as I am re-reading SR4.301 sounds like Pistols can have gas venting built-in, but can have it added as a standard barrel mount? I know this has be argued tons already.

Sorry to bring up an old argument, I'm new here and only read back 3 pages worth of topics. At least if a question is asked a lot it might eventually make it into a FAQ

I see that you can retrofit an integral smartlink. Can you retrofit an integral gas vent?

Not by the rules (unless you change or ignore them).

While - when applying some twisted logic - you could read this as allowing GasVents in the listed weapons, but not - at the same time - disallowing them in other weapons, that's certainly not what they meant, when they wrote this list of weapons, which can accept GasVent systems (the retrofits, built-in versions are included where they are listed, whether a weapon of that class would normally accept a retrofit or not).

The Hammerli 620s comes with an integral gas-vent 1 system. this doesn't mean that you can buy it any other gas-vent system, or buy a gas-vent system for any other pistol; it just means that the design of the 620s incorporates it.
The Ingram White Knight has an integral gas-vent 5 system, but this doesn't mean that anything else can have a gas-vent 5.
Several weapons have folding stocks, but this doesn't mean that you can buy a folding stock for them.
You need to keep the upgrades and upgrade rules seperate from the initial gun specs.

Well of course it is. =) It's an unreasonable burden to list all weapons that something applies to and additionally list all weapons that something DOES NOT apply to. By omitting anything lighter than machine pistols they are saying (explicitly I would argue) that those weapons can not be GV retrofitted.

Well, as its been stated, according to the RAW, the answer is no, however, they appearently exist in today's world so our group allows Gas Vent I (We treat it as the same price as Gas Vent II.) on Heavy Pistols, unless said weapon already has a built in Sound Surpression.
However, one way to get RC Comp in a pistol by the RAW is to use a Cyber Gyro. A bit extreme for just a pistol in my opinion, but it would work.

Laser sights can be put on the "barrel" mount in SR4. I'd assume this actually represents being mounted right alongside (or under, in the case of a lot of handguns) the barrel, and would be the logical way to retrofit a laser sight onto a Pistol without using the top mount.
