Full Version: The Fichetti Sterility Inducer?
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun

I just noticed something quite interesting. On the art of a Fichetti Pain inducer in SR4 there is a warning label. It is very tiny. You can only read it if you blow up the image about thirty-two times.

The fine print warning reads "May cause pain, cancer, and sterility."

Now, fichetti is certainly using the label to cover their rear ends from potential lawsuits but it seems that they wouldn't have specificly listed cancer and sterility if these things havn't happened before, possibly during testing. After all, there are so many potential problems with any product that listing them all preemptivly would be impossible.

It makes for some interesting flavor to have characters who were sterilized or given cancer by a pain inducer it it gives a reason for shadowrunners to actually be scared of a two-cent rent-a-cop carrying one. Sure, the pain is only momentary but the swim team may never be the same again.

That's what happens when you bombard living tissue with microwaves.
The Jopp
I wonder if there's a chance to overcharge it so that it actually cooks people...

Anyone needs a meltagun? grinbig.gif

I'll see your meltagun and raise you a choppa.

Can "an inexpensive, effective, non-lethal stun technology accurate at 100 meters" be far behind?

Microwaves aren't exactly big cancer-causing sources. Microwave photons don't pack the punch to rip up DNA like UV or x-ray light.

By the time you actually pump enough microwaves into a target to start worrying about cancer, that roast pork smell will tell you the target has more immediate concerns.
The Jopp
The Fichetti pain inducer has one big drawback though, it is only good when used by at least three people. Two who subdue the target with inducers and one to cuff the subject.

As soon as you drop the beam they are a-ok, and how much is one "charge"? Is it one shot that can be centered on the target for eternity or is it one shot per combat turn?

I'd assumed that cancer was probably quite treatable by 2070. Of course cancer is an umbrella term for a wide variety of cellular misfunctions, so there might well be some cancers that are still a problem, but generally speaking maybe cancer isn't quite the nightmare that is used to be in 2006. (If you can afford the treatments).
What do the rest of you think on this issue?
fistandantilus4.0
treatable or not, any kind of cancer is bad (mm-kay?). I don't tink people are going to be jumping right back up from the microwaves BTW>

IIRC, the U.S. army is currently looking at using a much larger version (or was at least) for crowd dispersal in the middle east .As in , on the back of a truck large. Makes you feel like your skin is on fire, so you run the hell a way. I don't really see people just bouncing back form that.

Hell ,look what happens to popcorn. wink.gif

My point on cancer was a general one. I had an NPC who'd developed cancer. Then I wondered if that was necessarily as bad in 2070 as it would be in 2006.

There're microwaves and there're microwaves. Sticking your head in a microwave oven = bad, but mobile phones also use microwaves and despite what the scaremongers say there is no solid scientific evidence that mobile phone microwaves cause health problems beyond psychosomatic ones. All depends on frequency, amplitude, intensity etc I guess.

Hyzmarca, is your warning label different from mine, or are you just not quoting the entire message?
"WARNING! Microwave Radiation Emitter. May cause pain, cancer and sterility. The Fichetti Corporation is not liable for any harm that results from this products use."

This I gotta see!

Well, now that we've deciphered YOUR preferences... (I'm surprised you haven't posted in the 'where are pictures of trolls' thread yet ;P )

(I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist)

HAHAHAHA!
Are there any more "easter eggs" like these in the book?
Squinky
I think those are the only two. Which means to me, that is more of a joke thing than anything that should be analized.

...As it were.

Also, I once had a character who ran a very successful troll porn distribution business (ah, Day Job flaw, you are missed...) in addition to his running activities. Maybe I should bring him back as an NPC spammer...

Quoting the whole thing when a single sentence would do pushes the limits of fair use. biggrin.gif

I've found 3 so far, including the two previously mentioned. The third isn't quite as amusing but I could totally see it happening...

Page 309, the Fichetti Pain Inducer, zoom in on label to 1200%
Page 323, the Goggles, zoom in to 600%
Page 329, the Medkit, zoom in on medkit-screen to 1600%

It looks like any of those sharp pictures were added digitally, instead of scanned, so you can zoom in really close and still have a sharp image. So if you want to find others, look for that kind of image...

Hell, I laughed just seeing Speed Coma mentioned.

I can't tell if you meant that as a joke or not :/

Given magic and nanite treatment, that's a question of money:
If you can afford it, you don't have to worry much - if you can't...
